My old kitchen was in a two local design magazines, but not national. My new house is supposed to be in a (again, just regional) magazine this spring ... if it's done!

Our kitchen was in two separate New England design magazines last year and our KD now uses it in her print ads. We went through two photo shoots which were quite exciting.

Mine was on an online blog. The apartment in general made it through the initial phases of consideration for two national magazines but was rejected, finally.

organic_donna had her Scavolini/Blue Bahia kitchen published - I don't remember where.

Who decides what should be included, even in the local stuff?

Usually the professionals involved have contacts and they pitch it to the press, to get their name out there. Or, if you happen to know someone who is in the business they might inquire. We had someone knock on our door to include our old house in a book. But I dont think he ever published in the end ...

I can think of two more GWers who have had their kitchens published in magazines.

The first belongs to yesdear. Her kitchen was featured in This Old House almost a year ago.

The second kitchen belongs to shainghaimom. It's featured at attic mag.

No, wait, make that three GWers who've had their kitchens published. Unfortunately, I can't remember screen name or where I hid the bookmark to the kitchen pics so I'm a bit useless at the moment. Anyhoo, I saw this kitchen in a mag before I realized they belonged to GWer. I'll see if I can hunt it up because it's really gorgeous.

But, wait, there's more. ;-)

There are at least two more GWer who've had their kitchens featured at Attic Mag:
allison0704 and ... oh, shoot, brain fritz again. I can see the kitchen in my mind's eye but I can't remember the name behind the beauty. Someone for sure will remember, though.

Who decides what should be included? The editors of the publication. I'm a freelance writer and I can pitch my heart out, thinking I've found a great story, but if an editor doesn't like it or if it doesn't fit the story line they are working on, it's dead in the water. Lack of decent photos also hurts, either timing is off (more critical for gardens, my focus, than for kitchens) or it doesn't photograph well.

It can also be a matter of who you know and who they know. Yes, professionals do cultivate connections with the media. It's mutually beneficial. Writers are always looking for the next story. My garden has been published several times but the first time was because of a personal connection.

And as mtnrdredux pointed out, sometimes it can be a result of a cold call although that is much harder to do with kitchens than with gardens.

I'm curious why you are asking. Are you trying to get your kitchen published?

our old house was used for a photo shoot for Target stores. a photographer friend wanted to use our new house for an ATT ad but we were nowhere near ready. the money is great but you'll probably have to repaint and/or have the floors redone after the crew leaves. depends though...

Score, kateskouros! I *wish* magazine shoots paid owners but IME, they don't. They don't even send photo stagers these days. Oh, wait, I heard BHG still does but most don't.

Lisa_a no I'm not, my remodel hasn't even begun yet! I was just wondering because so many here have kitchens that I would put above some of the stuff I've seen in magazines. It just seems weird how one gets published that is okay and something AMAZING I see on the web doesn't even get a nod.

My Florida kitchen didn't get published, but it did win a grand prize from DuPont. Got a big fat check which, after taxes, covered the cost of the counters and then some.

My current kitchen might get published in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest time spent dithering over backsplash tile, but I don't think that's what the OP was talking about.

The white and gray kitchen belongs to Rococogrl. It is one of my very favorites!

No, the magazines don't generally pay for editorial content but if it is used in a commercial or catalog shoot as background, they do pay, and there is a difference on how your house and stuff gets treated too.

Our kitchen was featured in atticmag.com for an article on glass tile backsplashes (it's the first one; vertical glass tile kitchens).

Considering the way my contractor relationships are going, look for my kitchen reno on COPS.

Not national, but . . . ours was in the local paper in the "My Decorating Success" that runs on Saturdays. DH always said that our kitchen turned out better than a lot of the projects we saw in there, so I sent in some photos. The reporter liked the DIY angle and the modern house (not a lot of them around here), got a photog and came out.

IIRC, there was someone here two or three years ago who had her kitchen featured in a magazine and the photo shoot took place while her DH was mountain climbing (Mt. Everest?).

One factor for getting a project published is related to the products that the kitchen illustrates in context. Since most of the shelter mags and other commercial publications are keyed to the construction industry, it's gonna be an unusual situation for a rebel or modest kitchen to be picked up for a publishing project. If your kitchen reflects the trends, the current products, the next best thing, the cutting edge, or the sure thing, you are more likely to be approached for a publication.

Two or three of our vendors may use pinpointed photos of our kitchen for their websites or ads, but I doubt they'll tout the whole project because it is not all that trendy and uses old appliances. The countertop guy and his customers are more interested in our laminate than House Beautiful would ever be.

$6K per day for 14 days?!?!?! No wonder you're bummed your house wasn't ready, kateskouros. Dang, I want a deal like that. That would cover one of my kids' college costs. Suppose I have to redo the kitchen first, though. Just a small detail. ;-)

florantha, there are at least 2 publications that focus on modest renovations. One is put out by Woman's Day, the other by BHG. I've seen kitchens with laminate counters, existing cabintry refinished or painted, and run of the mill appliances (including white appliances) in the pages of these 2 pubs. So yes, there is a place for a rebel or a modest kitchen to be published.

Mine is on Mission Stone & Tile's website, but only because my kitchen won their contest, and it is for their adverstising.

Someone else pointed me towards a blog that had my backsplash in their inspriation photo.

When the photographer came to shoot the backsplash photos, he told me that he thought I should contact the area magazines and send them the photos, he said he knew that they love to do stories on DIY stuff like this. He also told me that he has a photo bank on his website, and a lot of European magazines use his stuff, he said not to be too surprised if he sends an email that it is being published overseas. He said they have used his kitchen in decor magazines in Europe. I find it hard to believe that my kitchen would ever be used.

I just came across one of my favorite GW kitchens in BHG...but I can't remember the GW's handle. And of course I didn't bookmark it!

Spanish style galley with flushmounts down the center. If you've seen my kitchen, you know I took inspiration from this! Beautiful architectural details. Lots of green and white and black. Crisp and clean.

If not, then I wish you could remember whose kitchen you're thinking of, because I'd like to see it (no pressure, ha).

I remember a kitchen from 2003 (I think) that was the most unique kitchen I have seen yet. The cabinets were custom and the woods were mixed on the cabinet fronts - creating a curve if my memory is correct. The kitchen was featured in a magazine (don't remember if local or national). Windows, lots of beautiful windows.

Organic_Donna (who hasn't posted here in a long time) had her kitchen published in Chicago Home & Design magazine. Her kitchen, in a hi-rise condominium with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to Lake Michigan, is stunning, very modern, beautifully designed in a small space.
