Marty, Does code in your area require the air gap for your diswasher? I ask because I've read repeatedly on the forum (and have confirmed with our plumber) that air gaps are a thing of the past and not a code requirement anymore.

In response to your question, I'd be hesitant to have the sprayer so far from the second sink. If you also don't need the air gap, I'd use that spot to put an air switch for the disposal and move the sprayer closer to the faucet.

I don't think she mentioned a sprayer. When you say water dispenser are you referring to filtered cold water or an instant hot or something else? Many people don't have a separate sprayer (I don't) because they use a pull down or pull out faucet. If that is all you are going to have and you can't get rid of the air gap I think the placement is fine. The water dispenser, whatever kind it is, next to the larger sink will let you use it to fill pitchers and larger pots by putting them in the larger sink. My only change would be if you have any intention of removing the air gap in the future and putting in a soap dispenser instead, in which case I would put that the left and the dispenser on the right. I have mine that way because I want the soap dispenser on the "working" side of the sink and not over the part where I would be putting clean dishes to drain. It would help if you gave more information on what you are putting there. What type of faucet with how many holes? What type of water dispenser? Is the air gap mandatory and if so will it stay an air gap later?

In most municipalities, air gaps are no longer required as long as the DW does not need one (& I don't think any of today's DWs do). However, some places are behind the times and have not yet changed their code...thereby forcing people to put them in even when they are not needed (parts of CA come to mind...based on posts here).

If you do not need an air gap, and I hope you don't, have you considered either a soap dispenser or, if you have a garbage disposal, an air switch (to turn it on/off w/o the danger of an electrical shock, to have the switch easier to reach, and to reduce the breakup of your blacksplash).

What faucet do you have? Is it a pull down or pull out? If not, I would also consider either putting in a side spray or changing faucets.

I'm assuming the water dispenser is either a filtered water dispenser or an instant hot water dispenser (or both!).

You are probably right Sue, I never even thought of that, since I've never had one. :c) Thanks for clarifying. I hope Marty sees the post regarding the air gap since we're all on the same page with that.

fyi, i have the separate sprayer now, hate it. Am switching faucets to a pull down as soon as granite is installed. A tip from GW! Gotta love it!

Thanks everyone. The air gap is required by code, but can be removed after. Yes I have a single hole pull out Hansgrohe Allegro Gourmet faucet. The water is a cold water dispenser with a lever. Makes me mad that I didn't know I could take out the air gap. I wouldn't have paid extra to have it match the faucet! Do soap dispensers fit into the holes for the airgap without any further work needed? If so, I would agree with Sue. If not I will probably go with the water on the left for the same reasons she gave.
