Anyone have creamy cabs, soapstone sink--what countertop?

I am in the midst of a dilema. We are in the crunchtime stage of a complete kitchen redo. We are planning custom cabinets painted cream and bright white subway tile backsplash. Our sink will be a soapstone farmhouse. My dilema is what color ceaserstone to choose. I only like the non-busy/non-aggregate varieties. Any ideas or pictures to share?

When you already have cream and bright white, and the solidish gray or black sink, I can only think of something like an aggregate pattern to try to tie the colors together. I have a hard time picturing another solid added to the bunch. Maybe just something to blend with the sink?

You haven't told us much about what you like or want. Do you prefer strong/bright colors? Dark or light? Cool or warm? You must've had some vision in mind when you chose cream and bright white, which usually aren't used together. I think you need to share more about the idea you're working toward before we can offer suggestions.

We live in an old home (built in 1920). My vision is very traditional. I would prefer a warm look which is why I am aiming for a creamy white color for the cabinets. As far as the subway tile goes, I have not yet chosen it, but am thinking a clean white. What I left out is that I am considering having my island painted black and that will have a butcher block top. As a rule I am not a fan of strong/bright colors. To get more of a visual idea of my goal, click on "my page" and go to my clippings, I think that will help.

I am having a terrible time trying to choose a countertop. The problem is, I am not crazy about granite, and that's what everyone is trying to sell. What's wrong with me? According to every HGTV show, I'll never be able to sell my house without it! :) But I find granite to be dark, busy and cold. My kitchen is on the smaller side. It's a galley kitchen. It's almost all white with accents of navy blue. Think cottage style meets Ralph Lauren. The blue is in the upholstered window seats-- piped in white. The kitchen is a far cry from the big model homes, but our house is old and the kitchen suits its character. Although it's white, it still feels warm and cozy and the warm lighting helps a lot with this. The appliances are also white (not stainless...). Anywho...the floors are a pretty honey wood, the cabinets are professionally painted white with nickel knobs. My current countertop is white, and it's a cheap laminate that has lasted 20 years---raising 3 kids and a husband. And we did not baby it at all. I have Clorox sprayed the heck out of it. We have colored Easter eggs on it and God-knows what other messes we have made, and it always comes clean. It is just now showing it's wear and that's why I'm replacing it. I think I want another white countertop. I'm not afraid of doing laminate again, but when I say that to kitchen salespeople, they look at me like I need medication. (...and perhaps I do!) I don't want the EXACT same thing. I'd like it a little bit updated. But what is that?? Help. My countertops now have a matte finish. There is a super-shiny white forminca out there that would be different. Does anyone know about that? Does the shine wear off? Would it be TOO shiny for a kitchen..like WHOA, in the morning? I've gone on WAY too long, but I just want to know what other people do for countertops when they want to keep the look of their bascially-white kichen. Many thanks! butcher block counter, unpainted cabs?

We are doing a budget remodel using high end (second hand) oak cabinets and installed butcher block from Ikea. The butcher block is much more affordable that the soapstone I wanted, and I really like the look. However, we installed it knowing that we would change the doors of the cabinets in a year or two. After living with the wood on wood look for half a year, I really am motivated to have more contrast. I think it depends on your kitchen and the look you want. Our kitchen requires more light, so we will not be going darker with the wood. I don't like all white cabinets, and am considering a duck egg blue for my baking hutch area, with the rest of the cabinets painted white - conversely I like the look of wood lowers with white uppers. My dh will photoshop both looks. If this helps, I picked up a few Adel doors in our local Ikea As-Is area just so we could test colors by painting them. It has a similar look to what we want in a door, and no matter where we end up purchasing doors, we think it will give us a good idea as to the look we want. Hestia

Anyone have both marble/soapstone countertops?

That was my plan, but I couldn't find soapstone that worked with my marble. My dark counters are Cambrian Black granite and super tough, so they are a bit different. The marble is my perimeter. I made the choice based a lot on looks and wanting to be different from the black on white kitchens that were starting to pop up. The white on white followed, but at least I wasn't copying them. LOL The granite on the counter also allows a good function too -- the prep and work that goes on at the island doesn't have to worry about getting lemon juice and tomato juice, vinegar or whatever on the stone and it sitting there while working. I think it is a good idea to have one area to work without worrying -- even if you aren't one to feel you have to baby your marble. I have the marble next to my cooktop (where it is also my baking surface) and by the main sink. Does it stain? With all the coffee, tomatoes, chocolate, tea, chilies and spices I and a sloppy co-chef, two teen boys and their friends can give it -- no, not as long as you seal it. It will etch, but the only horrible, couldn't live with it etching was dripping some laundry product across the counter when we were moving back into the kitchen. It had knocked over in the garage and I wasn't worried about it since laundry products tend to be more alkaline than acidic. I wiped it up quickly and it still looked horrible. I buffed it out and haven't had a single cooking issue, including a spilled bottle of lemon juice, come close to that. I enjoy my marble, but don't get it if you'd have to put plastic over it!

My architect/designer sez these days Granite prices lower than nearly all the other solid surfaces and contributes to its popularity espec if u r not looking for esoteric colors. Marble, which i have alot of in our offices for multiple conf and other tables, even in a dark shade, is "delicate" in the sense that it is brittle and can crack etc, and in a lite color maintenance is brutal b/c it will stain (not an issue with, say, a dark wine color marble like we have but it does crack). I have seen some Granite Tiles used where costs need trimming and when done in larger tiles, and done well and creatively, the look is acceptable and grout lines minimal. So you may be able to compromise in one area this way...it is the long lengths of granite that set you back. Soapstone is a joy b/c of the touch, and if you like it oiled up black, stains not an issue. Natural colors of soapstone are lovely but we have only used that in dining area cabinet tops in bar-like areas...and natural is not good for kitchen. (It also is great in bathrooms, even flooring b/c it isnt slippery). But soapstone is a more old-fashioned/colonial like look...not slick and modern My favorite for counters is Stainless Steel!!! installed in 1993 i still love it. But i would then warm up the look by having the island be done in something else. Also St.Steel with dark wood cabs really look warm and approachable.

I think that you should go with the honed ones if you are going to go with Ceasarstone. That might fit in better with the look you are trying to get. I was thinking about "rosemary" for awhile, but ultimately decided on soapstone. They also have a dark grey (raven). I should be getting my counters installed next week....can't wait to cook again...very strange for me!

I have creamy white cabinets and a soapstone sink - with soapstone counters. I think the sandstones or one to mimic the soapstone would be nice. I would do the honed finish.

Thanks for the helpful input. Shanny75, I was thinking of the honed raven and my only concern is I have heard honed Caeserstone is difficult to keep looking clean??

bethv, any pics to share of your soapstone sink/countertop with cream cabs?

If anyone has honed ceaserstone I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for all the great advice. I have narrowed it down to caesarstone raven OR caesarstone misty carrera!!?? Any thoughts on off white cabs with soapstone farmhouse sink, white subway tile, and misty carrera counters? We are also planning an island with a butcher block top. I am contemplating a fun color (a blueish green) for the island base and the sink base. With that criteria in mind, would raven or misty carrera look best?

Misty Carrera is really busy. I would go for the Raven out of those two choices because you already have a lot going on. If you like the marble color of the MC but want something more subtle, you could take a look at what I picked, it's Corian Private Collection in Rain Cloud. Not Caesarstone, I know, but it is very pretty. I can't wait to see it installed in my kitchen.

If you didn't have the fun island planned, I'd say go with the Misty Carrera, but I just think it would be a bit much with everything ... so Raven is the safer choice.
