Undermount cast iron sink--any regrets?

Greetings all:

We're coming down to crunch time on selecting sinks. We're gonna have two double sinks (one in the kitchen, one in the adjacent butler's pantry) and one single one in the island. All will be equipped with garbage disposals. (Yes, I know, overkill.) We're looking at the Kohler cast iron sinks. The countertops will be granite.

Anybody out there have undermount cast iron sinks and then regretted it? The main reason we're considering enamel cast iron is that they're pretty and shiny; if there are any problems associated with them, I could certainly be persuaded to go with something else. I do want the undermount, though; don't want a self-rimming drop in sink.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

No regrets! Kohler cast iron is head and shoulders above the competition.

The only thing I question is whether you might not want another single bowl or low divide sink. You might want to look at some past threads about single vs. double bowl. If you're sure of your usage and configurations, then there's nothing to worry about. Really!

Love my kohler undermount sink. It is a single bowl.Previously we had a double bowl but really prefer the single bowl.

for a 36" cabinet you can go with a large size sink! Single or double bowl is a matter of preference and how you wash dishes etc. I like a low divide double sink, which allows you to have the functionality of a single and double sink. Generally, if you prefer stainless steel, you would want 16 or 18 gauge. Also, can you ask your granite fabricator if they have sinks in stock. Here in the U.S. many fabricators sell sinks as well. I replace sinks for a living and have yet to pull a countertop to replace a sink except in solid surface. You tap the cabinet front off, change the sink, and put it back on. I've done it twenty times. Did it the day before yesterday. For easiest sink changes, insist that your fabricator strap, not insert fasten, your sink in place with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness (Braxton Bragg) or a Sink Strap (Regent Stone Products) or two. Two easily accessible bolts instead of 12 inaccessible ones. I'd change a strapped apron undermount in a hour at most. Make sure he puts a nice radius at your sink cut-out too, 3/8" minimum. No pencil edge, please.

There are very contemporary apron front sinks with flat aprons. The ones from stainless are especially sleek looking and look gorgeous in even the most modern kitchens - at least to me. I am getting one that is less deep than many since I am short. It will be 8” instead of the 9” to 10” of some styles. There is no doubt that it makes more of a statement than an undermount sink so unless you are short or are really going for a farmhouse or more rustic type of look, it might be something that might be considered more on trend and therefore might become dated to some people who are less certain of their own taste. But I don’t think apron sinks will be more dated in ten years than white waterfall islands.

You should think about how deep you want the sink to be. My DS has a REALLY deep sink. It's great for hiding mess (if you have an open concept kitchen and you want to hide things til you have a chance to clean up for instance). But I was helping out at her house during an illness recently, and I found that my back started hurting after a lot of hand washing. I hand wash at home a lot and never found my back hurting. So you might want to think about the depth and what you would like to prioritize. The Kohler Riverby isn't all that deep, but it is big, so I can put a whole roasting pan or large baking sheet in there for soaking without have to put them in slanted. That is more a priority for me that a super deep sink. I'm sure there are many others to choose from, just wanted to chime in with this one, which I like a lot.

I had a Kohler self-rimming double bowl in my old kitchen. Couldn't wait to get rid of the self-rimming and the double bowl. I did have problems with scratching and staining (after 25 years!).
I now have undermount fireclay single bowl, I just thought it was too beautiful. I love, love, love the single bowl! Which ever you choose, get the sink grids to protect your beautiful sink (and dishes)!

My enamel undermount is a 50-year-old hospital basin, and still going strong. :-)
