99% done - appliances, best and worst choices

I've been lurking on this forum for about 9 months. We have finally moved back in after a whole house remodel of 6 months. I don't have a clue how to take pictures and get them posted so I will have to wait for my 12 yo to help me post.

I've learned so much from this forum - thanks

Here are my apppliances: Miele double wall masterchef ovens, 36 "Diva induction cooktop, Miele !8"freezer 30" refrigerator, Miele excella dishwasher, Miele hood 36 DA5091, Franke orca sink in kitchen with Grohe lady lux cafe and silgranite sink in pantry KWC Domo faucet. Calcatta marble island, seafoam river wash perimeter, stacked glass subway type tiles to ceiling. Floor, quarter sawn red oak 3 1/2"boaards no stain, Cabinets, Cherry modified shaker full slab

Best last minute decision - remove upper cabs and tile the wall all the way to the ceiling - dishes and glasses in drawers.

Best appliance decision for me - induction, miele dishwasher (allright that's two)

Worst choice - DH wanted a large jacuzzi tub - the thing is huge, there is so much water on the floor afterwards it is as if you are at a water park.

Questionable choice - Miele frig/freezer instead of sub zero - it is very QUIET which was why I went with it at the last minute, but expensive and hard for me to reach to the top, (I'm short) Jury is still out on the Miele columns.

Unhappy with - where some of the light switching is located. I didn't give it enough thought before the electrical wolk through; additionally I should have written my own notes on where the switches would be located and how they operate ie 2way, 3wy, dimmer ect so I could double check before it was buttoned up.

Happy with -the big drawer set up and the pull outs for garbage and recycle.

If anyone wants feed back on the appliances let me know.

That's funny...I had to switch from the Kitchen Aid DW we wanted to a miele because of a size issue (miele is half an inch smaller). It cost far too much for a dishwasher, and both my husband and I HATE it with a passion. It screams for salt on every wash (beeps until you shut it off) and the thing is...we don't need to soften our water here so it's very hard to find dishwasher salt.

In addition, no silverware racks (yes I know that stupid shelf is on top but I don't like it) and there is no where to put a full size plate.

Please???? LOad it and show me how you make it work? I really absolutely HATE HATE HATE this stupid dishwasher, and after paying almost 3 grand more for it....I'm a bit bitter and need to be talked out of that.

Got very similar appliances except went for the BI-48S for the reason you are a little ify on the height of the top shelfs. 11 switches all dimmers including low voltage for over and under cabs lighting and laid out how they were to switch and laid out the order of the switchs on walls (took a while to get it figuired out and checked)

Machine is great. Get the book out to see the way the silverware should be laid out and start each type of silverware starting at the ends and work to the middle or from the middle out to the sides.

Softner: Check the hardness value of the water per the manual to see how low it is. You can then manually set the value of the Hardness and I think the beeeping will stop.

But if you are above 4 or 5 on hardness you may benefit from salt.

Not sure of the full plate comment. Mine holds lot of full plates?

Shelayne--Yes, that's my lovely 1979-1980 before kitchen! We have only lived here a year, and that kitchen was dark, and poorly laid out. I am just loving the function in my new space! taking out interior walls and soffits helped bring in a ton of natural light! It feels like the house space in the house is so much more usable! Love it! The mosaic is one of my favs in this kitchen! If you are looking, check out sonoma tile, they have several color pallets to choose from!! thanks for taking the time to check out my pics!!

Cleo- the original stovetop fit in a bigger hole than the "new" one, so that piece of stainless was jammed in there to cover the hole. Needless to say, it did not stay very well! The tile backplash and counter were original to the home, built in the early 50's, and those switches on the wall were the controls! That is not grout- that was how the tile was glazed or painted or whatever. Heheheh, so many people used to comment on the "retro" decorating, and liked to play with the switches. raehelen- yes, I got a great deal on the granite. The slabs were discounted from 20/sf to 4.99/SF because there were irregular areas in them that limited the useful squarefootage, and they'd been sitting around for a while. There was a stack of reduced slabs, and I asked to see some of the ones hidden in the back of the stack, and low and behold, there were three slabs hidden back there that were gorgeous....... Even the granite guy said something about how that stack had not been touched for a while. I had even been to that granite yard twice before, and not thought to ask to look deep in that stack. I bought 2 slabs, for $464, and there was a bit of waste, but I still have enough left to make a bathroom vanity countertop! The fabrication was $2285. I was quoted between $1800-4500 by other fabricators. Oh, and the cabinets are santos and santa maria mahogany, no stain.

cawfeegirl - Thanks for getting back to me about the support wall and cabinet hardware. My next quesion was about the wood floor stains, but then newbieremodeler beat me to it. I think you were smart to give it time and see if you can live with the stain color difference. Could you strategically put a runner or rug to cover the area where the old/new woods meet? Maybe that would make the difference less noticeable. If you do decide that you can't live with it, don't think it has to be done right away. Maybe try to schedule it during a future vacation.

Nomorebluekitchen: My entire HOUSE was blue and I'm slowly redoing (including getting rid of that blue soffit - what was I THINKING when I chose that wallpaper???) The dimensions of the island are just under 6 feet by 38" at its widest. I went with a very simple design - two 33" drawer banks and sometimes when I see some of the islands here I rethink that, but I do like the simplicity of it and I love just having drawers (no more doors and pullouts!). The width of the kitchen is approx 13 feet 6 inches. 3 stools will fit just fine and I put an extra stool there when we have people over, but I really love the look of the cherry - so that's why I don't have the third there every day. It may be hard to tell from the pics, but my microwave and oven aren't directly behind the island. The edge of the oven is about 4" past the edge of the island - so usually I don't have to ask anyone to move to get something out of the oven/micro. The frig however is a bit tight if someone is sitting at the island. That's why I went with the French doors. I have a lot of counter space next to my sink (3 feet is open even with the cabinet there), so I have no problem losing some of it to that cabinet. It's 15" deep and has pocket doors, so I keep some of my small appliances and most of my everyday dishes, etc in there. I like the way it looks, don't know if the pocket doors were the best idea tho - they waste a lot of space and I might have been just as happy with an appliance garage and regular cabinets above. But I do like the way it looks! Lois418 - yes I worked with Karen!! I feel like I know you because I had bookmarked your kitchen before meeting with her, and when she showed me pics, I said "I KNOW THAT KITCHEN!!!". We used the same tile guy - my backsplash is similar to yours - but I added the arch - just to complicate things!!

HOw user friendly do you find the Miele MC ovens? Are those the ones that are not self cleaning? My ovens are primarily used for casserolles, baking, and roasting.

Hey, Igloochic, so far my husband and I do not like our Miele either. It seems so much smaller than my old GE, holds a lot less, and doesn't seem to clean as well, and the dishes are always really wet when we open the door.

Everyone praises it so much that I thought maybe we got a lemon.

Although I do like the silverware tray at top.

igloo, LOL my miele DW is one of my top favorite items in my new kitchen. after we had it a while it did start "crying" for something... rinse aid I think. I had to look through the manual and punch in a series of codes and it stopped beeping. that was when i realized that it has a VERY sophisticated computer running behind the scenes (which in general scares me... particularly given the quality of repair men these days). Since then, all has been fine.

The cutlery rack was a big risk for me. I didn't know if I would like it... had never had anything remotely like it before and I have to say that I love it. Maybe with time you will too? My middle rack is adjustable so can be raised to allow for more room in the bottom rack for tall items but so far I have been fine even with saute pans, stock pots etc going in.

My worst appliance so far has been my GE Monogram fridge which has already met three repairment in its short 5 month life. so sad. (but on a happier note is currently running fine. am keeping fingers crossed... wish i went for the subzero which was $2K more... in the long run that doesn't seem like much).
