Can you recognize this granite?
Comments (25)homey_bird - yeah, these forums rock! But, so many people have helped me here on Kitchens, as well as on Appliance, Laundry, etc. I'm even on SLF most every night, just to vent. I have pointed so many to GW and even many pros take what we have to say very seriously. I was just tickled to see the exact kitchen you were looking for right after I read this post. One thing - follow Marge's advice. I can't tell you the number of samples I have in every spare place in my house. Everytime I saw something that would work, I brought it home and OMG, it was the worst thing I'd chosen so far. I even took a piece of my cabinet with me to the stone yard, and that still didn't work. A lot has to do with lighting, even that from the sun at different times of the day. The fabricator I'm working with now offers 1ft square samples and that has made it a lot easier. I stayed with with because of that and other details they provide, even though they ended up being higher than others I spoken with. I've worn out my welcome with most of my family and friends, but it will be worth it soon. My install is next Friday!!! good luck on your kitchen....See Morelisa_sandiego - your granite name for homey_bird
Comments (1)Thank You. Very nice of you to comment. I answered back on the original thread....See Morecpang74 your granite sounds interesting--name please?
Comments (3)I don't have a picture yet-but it is not anything very exotic. It actually is a Santa Cecilia-but I feel very strongly that my slabs actually look more like a Venetion Gold. It has more movement in it then a lot of pieces I have seen in other granite yards though! I will try to get a picture soon and post it for you. We have white cabinets on the perimeter and a black distressed island. We are doing a black travertine backsplash with bronze (rust) accent tiles and the black, rust and white are all found in the granite. The greys and white really move a lot! Comments (15)Thanks for the comments. I like all your advice and really expected people to tell me to go with the smoke and not white. I am posting images of the two tiles . To answer epressler's question the smoke subway tile is not glass but a crackled finish just like the off white subway tile. Yes, the granite does have a small amount of white flecks in it but since the kitchen is so dark with not much afternoon sun, the counters look and feel darker than the photo I posted. I know some under cabinet lighting would help but I am not going to have lights on during the day so that is one reason for the white subway tile idea. I like subway because most of the kitchens I admire use it. Most of the kitchen I admire also have a lot of white either in marble or painted cabinets. I feel like I did not choose very traditional countertops but my taste is traditional and my long term plan is to keep the cabinets forever and just think about painting them white someday when they start looking old. I also like dianalos comment about the valances. I chose the ones I did because I love oranges and yellows but maybe I should look into finding a new fabric that is not so dark and your comment about needing to go with white tile to change the effect seems spot on. The new images I am posting of the tile samples don't show the crackle finish but you will see one is much deeper and the bevel stands out...that one is also $30/sq. ft. ...the white one is only 12.99/sq. ft. and the bevel is not as neat but the white is crackled and almost a little iridescent. I am linking the photos in the optional link url. Does anyone know how to just get them to show up on my post?? Here is a link that might be useful: more photos of tile...See Moremkodimer
