Has anyone used tropical black granite?

I am changing my kitchen counters over from dark grey laminate that was originally installed about 12 years ago to granite. I have a dark maple cabinets with 12" tiles on the floor and 4" tiles on the backsplash that resemble a slate. The tiles tend to be a little busy with light grey tones and terra cotta red tones in them. I am deciding between three granites: tan brown, baltic brown and tropical black. I just found the tropical black and love the look and movement but cannot find many images about this one. Has anyone used it or any of the other granites I listed. I love the look of a granite with lots of movement but worry with a busy floor and backsplash tile that it may become overwhelming, although our kitchen is rather large with tall ceilings. Any suggestions? thanks!

Hi Mimi. In my old house we had Tropical Brown, could that possibly be the same as tropical black? Try a google image search of tropical brown and see if it matches!!

Thanks for the reply but tropical brown is different. I've had a very had time finding many images using Tropical Black granite. We found it at the stone yard recently and loved it but it has quite a lot of movement and almost reminds me of a leopard print. it's quite beautiful but busy so i worry about using. thanks!

2cm only requires plywood if you feel it does, or if someone else who is important feels this need. I've seen lots of 2cm without plywood, installed by Italians who know stone and whose families "know stone" for generations. I've seen them make tables out of 2cm and give it no support. Once you start trying to "be safe" you will do lots of extra steps. Plywood is a good one. Another good one is 3" radius corners for your sink cutout.

hsw, I understand completely. Having no transportation makes getting these materials infinitely more difficult. Due to similar circumstances, I just paid $17.00 for 25lbs of grit. As for myself & many others I have read about, these 3 items can be hard to come by & you have to travel far & wide to get them. You have a lot of drive w/ no transpo ( no pun intended ). Another source I found was a sand & gravel company. " Haydite " ( expanded shale ) is another good substitute ( if you can find it in the right size ). What ever you get, I would be sure & rinse it thoroughly. Best of luck to you. Rob
