Freestanding Range between 2 windows?

There are so many options for appliances!

We originally wanted a seperate cooktop and wall oven (placed below the counters) to give it a sleek look but are rethinking all the function we could have if we opened up the options.

One option that I like is the 2 ovens with the smaller stove on top but I'm only seeing those with the free standing. The freestanding also gives us the ability to switch out for replacement down the line much easier then a slide in.

BUT...

the look is substantially bulkier. I've been searching all morning for free standing between two windows where the vent/range are the focal point. Would this just look too awful, I'm thinking it would. I'd love to see this setup so I can move on and accept that the double oven will not be an option or it could work.

If your objections to using a pro style range or a slide in range are economic, that's a different story. But functionally, there's no difference in the opening space requirements for any 30" range except for an Electrolux.

If your objections are aesthetic, then look at the link above. You are correct in that you do not see a free standing range in this configuration. In every example pictured, the range used is either a pro model with a pro backguard, or a separate cooktop. A free standing range's high back guard with it's visible controls does contribute to the bulky look that you're averse to.

You might consider the GE Cafe, which is all stainless with a second small oven below and the controls are on the front. I have one and I LOVE it! I use the griddle all the time. It has the same 30" opening requirements that all free standing ranges have, but no bulky back guard. For what it's worth, all consumer grade ranges have the same 30" opening required, and there isn't any difference in that between a slide in and a free standing model. If your objections aren't economic, then your choices for your range are limitless, as that opens you up to pro style ones.

The WetStyle f/s tub has a removable tray that sits across the tub. I like numberjunkie's idea of a shelf or ledge behind the tub for placing items and also like the idea of having the shower wall next to the tub tiled half-way up to have a space for installing a grab bar. WetStyle has an optional shelf that surrounds the tub, but I think it would make it more challenging to get in and out of the tub - would need to hop over the shelf. The drop-in tub I was initially considering was 72"x42" but that would likely not fit, so would need to be 72"x36". This weekend I looked at an open house (new construction) in my area that had a drop-in tub with a narrow space for the deck surround (see attached photo). The deck was tiled on the top and on the apron with white subway tile. I noticed that with the narrow deck space (about 2") and the tub overhang, it would be awkward to sit on the edge of the tub and swing my legs in or out of the tub. Wiithout space for a deck that is wide enough to comfortably sit on, ease of entry or exit may come down to depth of the tub and options for placement of grab bars. I went from a freestanding to a slide in before I replaced my countertops. With the old counters I bought the rear filler strip which covered the ~2" gap at the back. New counters were templated so I could eliminate that filler strip.The rear filler for my stove was made for a 25" deep counter which worked perfectly with the original formica tops. If you have 25.5" deep counters (or something that puts the front edge more than 23 1/8" from the rear of the opening) then you might have to do something different with the filler. I'll have to check but I do think the manual listed a second option for those situations. The slide in ranges don't have sides. For my GE profile I could purchase sides extra if needed - in the case of it sitting at the end of a cabinet or if it were to stick out from the cabinet face more than 1.5" so you didn't see the bare frame. Nothing special needed to be done for the cabinets or countertops other than the countertops need to be level as you will lower the cook top onto them so it just touches since it overhangs the counter. If the counter tops aren't level you will either have a gap on one side or your eggs will roll to one side of the pan. My GE could fit an opening as small as 29 15/16" and ideal was 30 1/16." My exisiting cabs were 30 3/16 and I had new counters templated to match. You can't see any gaps since everything is covered with the cook top. The front edge of the stove sits pretty tight to the cabinets as well as the trim strips on the front edges are flexible for lack of a better term. I can post a photo of my range if you like.

Always check the specs for your appliances, they will tell you the minimum opening you need -- range, refrigerator, microwave, etc. Check the dimensions of the appliance as well as any required spaces around them for air flow, electric/gas lines, water lines, etc. That said, this is a very old thread. If you have questions, please start your own thread if your questions are not answered here -- you'll get more recent/current information, which is better than bumping this thread (or any old thread) up with potentially outdated information. To those attempting to answer questions from above, again, this is an old thread and the OP and the later posters no longer need your help. Please do not post here (or on any old thread) just to troll for business or to "get your name in lights". Your decision of slide-in vs free-standing will impact the counter installation. Counter material will not impact selection of range style. I switched from a free-standing to a slide-in range a few years ago and the range came with a little strip to fill in the gap behind the range. If I'd installed new counters, I would have had the counter fill in that space instead. The way that my slide-in installs, it may also have been beneficial (though not required) to notch the counters slightly in order to snug the range closer to the back wall. So when you've selected your range, make certain you have all installation instructions available prior to installation of the counters. A 30" range should be just that: 30" wide. You can usually check out installation instructions and specifications online to make certain, but as long as you currently have a 30" range in the space, the wide should be perfect for any other 30" range. Personally, I like the look of no built in backsplash on the range. That was my primary reason to switching to a slide-in. However, I've since found several ranges that are free-standing and have no built in backsplash. So, make certain you look at all of your range options before you make your decision on slide-in vs free-standing.

Aloha- Here's a picture of a range between windows, but it's more of a cottage than modern style. I'm also including my favorite kitchen (Laura Calder's) to show how beautiful all those windows would be, if you decide to put the sink there, instead. I know you love the range (and you have a wonderful plan) but I couldn't resist...it is my favorite :)

Aloha - I have a 48" freestanding range between two windows in the middle of my u-shaped kitchen. I love this look! I have a Wolf range so it's got the bulkier look with the big red knobs but I don't think that it takes away from the rest of the space (although I am obviously biased!). I haven't done pics of my kitchen in a while but I did a few months ago if you search for me. Good luck!

This is my freestanding range between 2 windows, although my windows may be considerably larger than most. I think the chimney hood eleviates some of the bulkiness while maintaining the scale of the room & the windows.
