Carpenter cut hand - gift idea?

Hello all -

Our carpenter badly cut himself on a power saw today. Luckily he doesn't require surgery. Probably just off work for about 10 days. Any ideas for a get well present?!

Kevlar gloves would be thoughtful. Or a iTunes of weezer's "My name is Jonas" which has the lines "the foreman has injured his hand" and "the workers are going home".

Gift card (for gas maybe?) since he will probably be out of income for as long as he's off work.

WOW! These are the greatest ideas:) If you're going for inexpensive, I love TennesseeKathy's idea of wildflower seeds in the envelope. I've seen where you can print these out for free all over the internet:) I also love Superiorgirls idea of cinnamon ornaments,and as matter of fact I made some last night!!! This is a recipe I used years ago,and the ornaments really last,they don't rot or mildew in the heat and humidity here. I will give the recipe. I made 48 2" hearts and 2 3" stars,only the stars kinda came out like starfish:). They will smell nice for years! And they dried out overnight. A little hint....use more cinnamon to sprinkle if it's too sticky,the cornstarch makes them too white, and really knead the dough til it cools.You have to use it within 30 minutes. Now,what I always make at Christmas time is soup in a jar. All year I collect baskets at yard sales,and if I'm lucky to find wide mouth mason jars, I buy those,too,but they're cheap enough:) And like someone else mentioned, I buy the bakery bags at the dollar store,you get 8 bags for $1. I make something called I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas Soup mix I found on the internet,and make the rice bags like Sunshine mentioned:) Those are so great! I make a square one with 4 compartments,and I make a long rectangular one with 4 compartments. I use mine all the time! I found these on the internet for a get-well package. You could use leftover turkey at holiday time to make the soup,but I always add a can of chicken so all the ingredients are there. Recipe for this in the link. I print out the recipe on nice paper,and attach with raffia. Cut out a nice circle of fabric if you want for the jar lid. If I make the rice buddy, I use the same fabric for the jar. NON-EDIBLE!!! Cinnamon Applsesauce Ornaments 3/4 cup applesauce 1 packet unflavored gelatin 1 jar cinnamon(1.9oz) I buy the cinnamon at the dollar store at 2/$1 and its over 2oz in a jar,so I use half a jar,then use more to sprinkle on when I roll them out. 1/4 cup cornstarch 3 tablespoons ground cloves Combine applesauce and gelatin in small saucepan and let stand for 3 minutes. heat over medium heat constantly stirring just til simmering. combine cinnamon,cornstarch and cloves in separate bowl. Stir in applesauce mixture. Turn onto counter and knead a f ew turns. Divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. use within 30 minutes. Roll dough between sheets of plastic wrap to a scant 1/4" thickness. Cut ornaments using 2 inch cookie cutters. Use a straw to cut holes for hanging. dry on wire rack overnight. Reroll scraps and repeat cutting. These are great! Also THESE ARE NON-EDIBLE!! and here's the link for the soup mix,everyone loves this soup! we add fresh celery and carrots,and everyone starts asking before Christmas if we're making it again! Crispix Puppy Chow 12 oz. box Crispix cereal 1/2 cup butter 1 cup peanut butter 12 oz. pkg. chocolate chips 2 to 3 cups powdered sugar In medium microwave-safe bowl, combine butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips and microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring once during cooking, until mixture is melted and smooth. Place the cereal in another large bowl and pour the melted mixture over the cereal. Stir until the cereal is thoroughly coated. Pour the powdered sugar into a large plastic food bag. Pour the coated cereal into the powdered sugar and shake until it is well covered with the sugar. Pour the cereal onto wax paper to cool and dry. Store in tightly covered containers at room temperature This recipe is fast and easy and everyone loves it. I add a little more roasted peanuts. Put them in a nice little bakery bag and it's a great gift! Something else I make is a milk bath sachet. I found where to print up beautiful envelopes and I bought a stack of vellum paper at a yard sale to print them on for a dime:) I'll probably never use all the paper I bought! Another idea using canning jars. Insert pieces of pines-usually about3-4 inches long-, 3 or 4 pieces-, fill with water about 2/3 full, put in a hand full of fresh cranberries. I take an inexpensive tea candle, remove the metal holder, make certain the wick doesn't have the tendency to fall out(I usually remove the wick, use a match to melt the bottom of the candle slightly and quickly push the wick thur the candle again). Push the candle down into the cranberries about half way-it will float. light the candle and enjoy. I use different sizes and shades of jars. When done, I drain the water, put cover on jar-aluminun foil works fine- and store in refrig. If you give as gift, I try and find lids for the jars at garage sales. They last for a very long time if kept in refrig.

You might consult his boss about a gift.He might know what tools he would like or need or know his hobbies that might give a clue as to what he might like. Some guys might love a new tool or piece of equipment..ie drill, tape measures, construction site radio,cooler or other tool(s). Also a gift certificate to Home Depot or Lowes will allow them to get what they would like as they need. Nice of you to take notice either way. I always suggest donuts and or Pizza on one or two days or a Friday for major crews such as framers, roofers, trim carpenters, stone crews etc. The good will can go a long way when you need a little extra work done here or there and its just plain nice to do.

If you know anything about him I would tailor it to his situation. If he has a family that he provides for and can't if he's off work; I"d consider a gift card for a local supermarket or restaurant they can order in from. If he's single... bottle of his favorite inebriate?

The best advice you can give him is to look at buying the new Sawstop Contractor Table Saw. It costs around $1500, I think. Its impossible to hurt yourself on this saw, there is a special blade brake that sucks the rotating blade down into the saw's body within milliseconds of contact.
How much is one finger worth? These saws should be made mandatory. I think they are trying to put one in every wood shop in the schools.
I dont work for them. Besides the safety features, they are sweet machines in their own right.

I have to say, cabmanct, that was my first idea as well! I got the contractor SawStop for my birthday this summer and it is a truly awesome machine. But the pricetag is probably a little above what the OP was intending ... :)

Not that you'd buy it for him, just tell him its out there.

A good idea would be to give him superglue for the next time he cuts his finger, seals the cut right up!

Casey's idea of the Kevlar gloves would be really cool -
here's another one that'll get a laugh:
Since it's Haloween season, go to yur local costume shop
and pick up one of those fake "silicone" hands.

Give him the gloves in a separate gift bag, and then...

whip out the second gift bag (with the fake hand in it)
and mention as you're giving it to him -
that you thought this would also come in "handy" -
"just in case you need a HAND with something else in the future....."

OK - so my sense of humor's a little twisted -
but you KNOW it's got to bring a smile to his face.....
or at least a giggle/chuckle/chortle/snort..etc..

I think it's so nice for you to do that, I think whatever you decide to do for him will be greatly appreciated whether its gloves, a gift card or a basket of goodies.

Cookies. And don't remind him of his mistake too often. (If it was me, I'd be mortified that I'd been so sloppy. Of course, I'm assuming that my "accident" would have been one of those preventable types. Maybe his wasn't.)

That was MY first thought, as well!! LMAO Atleast he's going to be okay, thank God. years ago, I worked on a winter home for a very well known family. The carpenters in this home were craftsmen every one of them. I mean in the 30 years I've been in the trade, I've yet to ever se anyone equal their quality of work. One of them was trimming out the windows this one particular day, and someone was talking to him as he was operating the chop saw, and he brought the blade down right across the 4 fingers on his left hand. That was the end of his career as a carpenter.

Reminds me of the time (1987) when we had a crew in, redoing our kitchen. One of the workers was stamding on a ladder, wiring an overhead lamp. I heard a "pow" , saw a flash of light and the worker landed on the floor, on his back. He had gotten shocked but refused to let me take him to a hospital. He didn't miss any work.

Our plumber cut a small artery in his hand in our garage and did require minor surgery. I'm just glad I was home at the time since I called 911 and had to compress the bleeding till they got here!

Anyway, he was mortified (as a pp mentioned). We got him a gift card for Borders so he could buy either books, CDs or DVDs to entertain himself while he recovered (but he was going to be out for 4-6 weeks).

Thanks for the responses. His partners bought the Sawstop yesterday so I guess I don't have to shell out the 1500. He is into specialty beers so I'll probably get him some as well as a restaurant certificate.

Perhaps I'll throw in a version of one of the gag gift ideas too!
