I have dark grey cabinets and soapstone. They're essentially the same color.

I have a friend who has medium dark granite, medium dark maple cabinets, and a very dark floor too with ORB fixures. Shockingly, it doesn't come off as dark, just rich. It's pretty. I would have never guessed in a million years that it would work, but it did. Her kitchen is very small and there is a sufficient window so that helps.

Here is a pic from our reno of 6 years ago. Our cabinets have a chestnut stain and the counters are relatively dark Venetian Green granite.

I have Giallo Ornamental in the darker version, but it also comes in a light version. It has movement with browns and taupes. The lighter version has cream in in.
I think with the dark granites, you will notice the water marks more. Mercy's granite looks great with the dark cabinets. No movemnt in it though. Others like it are Uba Tuba (the most well known)and Peacock Verde. Another one gaining in popularity is Tropcal Brown.

We have chocolate cabinets with Blue Pearl GT granite (ours reads more grey/silver than blue). Its not a granite with a lot of movement, but to show you darker cabinets with a darker counter, I thought I'd add...

Houseful really drove it home with Sydney4's pics. As much as I have enjoyed the trend of white everywhere, these rich color combos really create a warm, rich atmosphere. Maybe I am being influenced by this northeatern autumnal weather, bit I like the dark tones. Will you be happy with it in June? Then I say go for it.

Thanks so much for all of the pics, even those without movement in the granite. I think it will probably come down to seeing the slab yard in person and going with what speaks to us. Fortunately my husband and I are on the same page design wise most of the time, so I'm sure we will find something we both love.
I live in S. CA, so darkness in the kitchen in June will be a nice contrast to what is outside:-) I'll just do a lighter paint color and light backsplash to help balance and our floors are light as well, so I should be okay. Here's a picture of the space for those interested.

In the final stage of my kitchen renovation with dark cherry cabinets and polished cambrian black granite countertops. I think it is an elegant look.

If you go darker, can you put glass in the doors over the peninsula?

The cabinets over the peninsula are actually coming OUT and the cabinet will extend out into a breakfast bar. We will likly have pendant lighting over that space for more light and will add a glass element.

Sorry-the COUNTERTOP will extend on the peninsula for a breakfast bar, not the cabinets!!LOL

When I remodeled 6 years ago, I used rustic cherry cabs and Juperana Florence granite....in the kitchen and the master bath. Attaching a few photos so you can see.

I love the feel of these rooms and the richness of the colors as much today as I did 6 years ago. I live in Utah, so have cooler weather where I welcome the warmth of the wood and the granite....especially in the winter!

The pictures really are helpful, so THANKS! I think it is going to come down to me going to the yard and seeing what really pops out. I have several granites at the top of my list, so I'm sure I'll find something when the time comes. Chocolate beaches, Juperana Gaivota, saci, Mombasa and rainforest brown are on the short list.

we really stepped out of the box and went with espresso stained cherry, sedna granite, granite backsplash on cooktop wall, rubbed bronze door hardware.

i dont like stainless, so we paneled appliances. although we did use harvest gold stain on refrig. and some trim pieces.

we were afraid it was going to be too dark, but it looks awesome, imho.

we do have a skylight, kitchen window, sliders in dining room and dining room window, so we do get alot of light.
we also did 2 glass upper cabs.

alot of people suggested a light granite, but none "spoke" to me and frankly i don't like the look of dark cabs with white or almost white granite. to me it looks commericial/sterile.

i also did not do stainless/silver hardware. again, did not like the look and i really didn't want to see all this silver which in my opinion is what would catch your eye with dark cabs. i didn't want to really notice the hardware, just wanted it to blend.

my advice, get what YOU love. you have to look at it everyday not the people who recommend "this or that".

that's what we did and we don't regret it for a second.

we still have a pretty big punch list, so i will post pics when all is done.
