25' countertop with 36' depth fridge

There is plenty of room in the place its located but will it look ok?

Here's a layout. I suppose this 35 1/2 deep fridge includes the handles. But what do you think, should I go with counter depth? The fridge is located at the end of the top wall.

I have what KristianCO has, but without the wine slots in between. At least at the time, that required ordering a panel that goes between them -- an insulation panel, I think? She mentioned the ice -- another reason I liked the Thermador over the SZ. The SZ had the ice down at the bottom, nearly on the floor. That just doesn't work for all the ice we can use here in Texas. Fori, it's not having a second fridge to make up for the failures of the first one. People who spend $3 million on a house as well as the guest who walk into one expect a certain lifestyle to go with it. Even if they don't cook, they probably entertain. If they don't entertain, they want to look like they do -- or at least they could. In my area, people look for a space for a second fridge in homes by the time they hit $250-350K. By $1 mil, they expect a second fridge regardless of how big the one in the main kitchen is. Beverage fridge somewhere in the house or in an outdoor kitchen is probably also desired if not expected. I've seen homes below $1 mil (at the time) that had built-in fridge, second fridge space in the utility, a wine fridge and a small beverage fridge in the master suite. Those homes are probably between $1 mil and $2 mil now, but they give a clue what folks look for when they reach a certain price point. Yes, you can design for change and tear out a pantry, assuming you also left the upper clearance, and maybe it won't make a mess of flooring and cabinets, but in a $3 mil home, I don't think you are going to save a lot of money in the long run. First, you have to plan the layout to include a tall pantry and cabinet above the fridge that would be lost or have a 12" or greater opening and dress that off. That would all be lost when changing the fridge and you could have the cost of cutting down the above fridge cabinet and doors or a new cabinet. All the crown on that wall will probably need to be removed to change the upper cabinet. Your toe kicks will have to be removed and adjusted. Not a big deal, but another detail. And if any of these trim pieces split when being removed, you have to match trim and finish. This won't break the bank for anyone living in a $3 mill plus home, but it is enough that you can see the savings may be negligible or non-existent. Not to mention that after suffering through an entire build out, the last thing you will want to do is any reno any time in the reasonably foreseeable future. Most folks are exhausted well before the build is done. Ok to do it - but be honest with yourself about the cost, especially if you are not a DIYer.

From priciest to least expensive: 1. there are built in fridges like sub-z and that ilk where the doors are flush to the surrounding cabinets. you can get panels for these, generally. 2. there are counter depth fridges where the doors stand proud of the counters by a few inches but the body of the fridge is flush to the counter. you can get panels for some of these. 3. there are standard fridges where the body of the fridge stands forward of the counters. I don't think these come with a panel option. I found about 1-2K difference in price between #2 & #3 so bought #3 for a new build and made a 6" alcove for the back to recess into. I had no problems with "lost" items, it seemed very similar to a #2 type fridge I had of the same manufacturer in a prior home. A fridge will last 10-20 years, your kitchen may last longer than that. I really liked the alcove option, it seems you will always win when you can buy a less expensive appliance with more space.

I ordered the Dacor and it arrived at the store in less than a week, but cabinets don't come until April, so can't tell you how it is. Had all the features and size I wanted at a decent price. Note, Dacor is owned by Samsung since last summer but probably operations don't change much.

Counter depth will stick out around 6” from the surround. You may need an actual built in. And you need a 30” cabinet with fillers. Or to use a cabinet line that has 33” cabinets. Like pretty much the whole world of cabinetry outside of IKEA and cheepchinesecrapola.

Is there any way you can recess the fridge into the wall studs? You'll gain almost 4" that way. I did that with my standard depth fridge and made it counter depth.

You will gain 3" to 4" if you recess it into the wall. While that probably still won't make it look quite counter-depth, it will be better. If you can recess it into the room behind it, you can make it counter-depth. Either way, remember that the refrigerator doors must stick out past any counters or cabinets flanking it so they can open fully.

So, recess if you can and then surround it by finished end panels on both sides deep enough to cover the refrigerator carcass/box that still sticks out. Then, make the cabinet above the refrigerator the same depth and mount it b/w the end panels.

If you cannot recess it, do the same...you'll just need deeper end panels.

something is wrong.

it's deceptive.

in the layout diagram posted above, you have an 18" deep wall cabinet above the fridge. LOOK at how much space this 18" deep cabinet takes. Double it. That would be a 36" deep fridge.

If the diagram is accurate, you have a fridge body that sticks out 1 or 2 inches, and the door is about 2 inches thickness on top of that. Nothing to get hung up about.

I'll bet the diagram needs to be redrawn. If the fridge really is deep, consider this alternative: put 21" wide drawers next to the DW, and then make all the cabinets on the fridge wall be much much bigger (depth to wall).

davidro1 - the diagram doesn't show the 36" depth, it shows a 33" depth. I got to looking at the specs last night and notice the difference.

Buehl - My fridge wall is up against the basement stairway wall. By my calculations it looks like I have at least 4" I can recess it with.

Whatever you do, don't have an 18" cabinet over the fridge--you'll never be able to get into it and the fridge will look extra sticky-outy. Have that cabinet at least 24" deep.

Thanks Marcy 96 and fori. I think we put a 18inch cabinet above the fridge because the cabinet at the opposite end is only going to be 18" ( although it will be sitting on a counter) I will have her change it to come as close as possible to the depth after the recess.

Recessing in the wall is the way to go. Barring that, you could also pull the cabinets on the fridge wall forward, giving you a deeper countertop and more "cover" for the fridge on the end. That would narrow your passage area, though, by a few inches. You could possibly make that up on the other side by reducing your 24" drawer stack to a 21" drawer stack.

I had a similar location for a fridge and I really hated the 36' depth. It created a jut out that wasn't attractive and even putting a frame around it looked bad. It also made a dark little corner on the counter next to it. I couldn't recess so I bought a counter depth Jenn Air fridge and I love it - it looks wonderful and has plenty of space. If you can recess I'd go for it for sure.

I've been wondering about this as well - as I'm now choosing my fridge.

Brittu - what type of Jenn Air do you have? Is it SS or black/white? If it is black/white, do you get many fingerprints? Also, is it a french door bottom freezer? How is the layout inside. I'm having trouble finding pictures of the inside and can't seem to find them in the area . . .

buehl, thanks so much for posting the How To slideshow. DH and I are tackling our fridge this weekend. It's a counter depth, but it is going up against a wall. I wasn't sure if we'd need an end panel, but now I can see that we do.

You saved me from having to post the question.

By the way, if someone is looking for info on the Jenn Air, check the Whirlpool website. Whirlpool makes Jenn Air, KitchenAid (which is what I have), Whirlpool of course, Amana, Maytag and a few others. YOu might beable to find the manual with the diagrams online.
