Keep or get rid of the pond?
Comments (3)Sitting here going thru old pond posts and ran across this one. Wondering if you ever came up with a plan for your Florida pond. I live in IL but have a vacation home in south Florida on the Gulf side. The house was purchased pre=foreclosure in 2007 for use as a vacation home. Like your house, it was a mess, covered in weeds and filled with junk. It also has a pond in the backyard that was icky. One of the first things we did after closing was drain the pond so we knew what was living in it. It's not a big pond - about 12' x 6' oval shaped and 24" at deepest point and also made of concrete painted sky blue. Lots of leaves, pine needles and tadpoles plus a few mosquito fish which I scooped out and saved. After refilling I put in a pond pump and the tads and fish. We were there for 4 weeks that time before we returned to IL. The pump was removed from the pond before we left FL. Next time we went down, put the pump back in and netted out what debris was in there but water was back to icky. What I did was find water hyacinth plants - can import them to FL and they are not sold in the stores near me. So I found a local guy who had some in his pond. He gave me about 12 large plants for free since he had an overabundance in his pond and was tossing them in his burn pile. It's been over 2 years since I added the hyacinths and pond remains clear even without the pump going. Only filtration is the hyacinths. Pond life is abundant. Neighbor tells me she can hear the toads at night. We only go down to the house a few times a year so when we put the pump with a bubble spray in while we're there, it's only for the sound of the water bubbling. Hyacinths are all over Florida in ponds, swamps, creeks, etc. If you're willing to harvest some yourself, you can get them for free. I would get emough to cover 1/4 of the surface because they will multiply like crazy. When we visit our house, the whole surface is covered so we have to pull out at least half of them and burn them. Hope that helps....See MoreHow much $ to get rid of bulkhead & light fixture?
Comments (12)It depends. Where are you located? Are you paying someone to do this? Are there structural beams, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical running through those soffits? (Don't bet the farm that there isn't!) What's above that ceiling? Attic space or a second floor? If there's nothing running through the soffits and you have easily accessed attic space above and you can DIY, then the expense could be as little as $500-$700 for the materials and a few tools. If everything goes against you, and you live in a place like the Bay area in CA and there are major system in the soffits that have to be dealth with as well as structural issues and there is a second floor above with no real room to easily run the electric, then the project could cost 5-10K or so. No real way to know until you cut a couple of holes in the soffits and have a look and then have an electrician take a look at the ceiling framing....See MoreHow can I get rid of new cabinets?
Comments (12)When I took out our old cabinets, I asked if they could try to keep them so that I could donate them rather than just taking a sledgehammer to them (as much as I really wanted to take a crack at one with a sledgehammer!). I had an issue with Habitat - they came out, but since many of the doors were taken off and we apparently were missing some screws, they refused to take them. (I was so upset about that, as I really wanted the tax benefit of the donation.) I went back and forth with a few people from Freecycle who either stalled or were no shows. I posted it to Craigslist in the free section - and got around a dozen responses in the first few minutes it posted. Gave them to a nice guy whose dad is a contractor and who could do something with these cabinets - which were old, peeling paint, particleboard, and in some areas rotting away. So if yours are new, you'll have a feeding frenzy on Craigslist!...See Moreupper cabinet space/bulkhead advice needed
Comments (11)Either put them up to touch the bulkhead or put them lower, but cover the gap with moulding because it will look like a mistake otherwise. Also do consider the height above the counter carefully, as suggested by numbersjunkie. In my old kitchen the cabinets are installed too low (a custom job in the 60s; maybe the homeowner was short!) and I cannot fit some appliances beneath them (I am also short, but I hit my head on the corner of the range hood all the time!). If I were to remove my cabinets and leave the bulkhead/soffit then any new ones I install would also be too low. Plus or minus 1 or 2 inches may actually make a difference to what appliances you can fit under the cabinets. Measure your tallest appliances (coffeemaker; food processor; blender?) and make sure what you want to sit out on the counter can fit under there with any lighting or light valance installed....See MoreBuehl
