Inset Cabinets and Integrated Appliances

Hi All,

We are planning on using inset cabinets in our new kitchen and plan on buying the Liebherr HC2062 for the integrated look. I have been looking the spec sheets and I can't quite figure out if we will be able to use 24" cabinets or if we need to increase the depth to 25" to be able to keep the flush look. The spec sheet says that we need a 24 3/4" end panel for framed cabinets,but that would clearly not work with 24" cabinets. I am hoping that someone who has this configuration or just knows about this can help provide some insight?

We have the 2062 and struggled with the same thing. Your cabinetmaker will know how to take care of this.

We have 24 inch deep cabinets and the sides of the refrigerator box are 24-7/8 inch deep. With a 7/8 inch overhang on the countertops, the front edge of the countertops are flush with the front edge of the fridge cabinet. Perfect!

If you plan to use one of the KUDE Kitchenaid dishwashers, beware! They are 24 inches deep and if you put a cabinet panel on the front it will stick out past the front of your cabinets. Don't ask me how I know...

Oops, we have the counter depth CS2062, not the integrated HC2062, but I think my advice still stands. The countertop should die into the side of the fridge cabinet.

We will have a dishwasher with a custom panel in a row of inset cabinets. Our base cabinets will be 29" deep so we will have plenty of room to push the DW back, but if we were trying to fit it into 24" deep cabinets, there are a bunch of DWs that just plain wouldn't fit. You need to study the specs and installation instructions for your appliances, look at their backsides in a showroom to confirm they match the specs and then confirm with your cabinetmaker or cabinet supplier that they will install in the "hole" in the cabinetry. Or you can hire someone to do all that for you.

2nd option is always best. Manufacturers reserve the right to change specs without letting you know or publishing them in advance. And sometimes the are just plain wrong. If you proceed based on manufacturer's diagrams alone, and it's wrong, you'd better be prepared to eat the first panel and pay for the second because the cabinet maker won't do it and you'll never get the manufacturer to pick up the costs. They'll just point to their fine print, and the cabinet make will just say I told you so. As far as the install, it's a team effort. You need both on hand. Yes, that's twice the money, but it beats having to call the cabinet maker in the middle to modify a panel or for the cabinet maker to call the appliance guys for clarification about some bracket. Delays should be built into your expectations for the remodel. If you are lucky and everything goes as planned with a simple job, a kitchen remodel will only take 3 months. If you have a complicated kitchen, and have built ins and other issues, then 6 months would be closer to a normal time line. It ain't TV!

I did inset and only paneled one dishwasher. I chose not to panel my fridge because I personally like the industrial look of the stainless. I can't post pics yet because the fridge leg was accidentally cut by my installer so I haven't installed my fridge yet. I have seen it done both ways in my magazines so go with what feels right for your kitchen.

The issue is with the dept of the dishwasher. You need to verify the dept of the dishwasher plus the depth of the panel does not exceed the depth of the cabinets (usually 24"). The European dishwashers are generally not an issue (I have a Bosch), but some others are. KitchenAid was one that was notorious for being too deep. It is an easy problem to solve as long as you know about it before you order your dishwasher.

You can always hang the cabinets so they are pulled out 1 inch from the wall and you put a shim between the wall and the cabinet. You always need to put shims there because most walls are not 'perfectly straight' Then you put the end panel and counter top and no one will know that they were pulled out 1 inch.

If you are mounting the frig next to tall cabinets, then the faces of the cabs and the refrigerator face are at the same plane. To do this, I would pull out the cabs slightly, if needed.

Most of the time, the counter is mounted next to the frig and the counter is about 1 inch pulled forward (reveal) from the cabinets to give it room for the handles/knobs underneath. The countertop edge will be what is flush with the refrigerator face, not the adjacent cabinet. If you want the refrigerator flush with the cabinet face that is adjacent, then the counter top/end panel will stick out beyound the refrigerator face if you are using them.

Some hinges can deal with this and some hinges cannot. (The hinge has to travel out 1 to 2 inch before it starts to swing. Otherwise, the door will run into the countertop or the adjacent panel as it starts to swing out...)

I believe SZ integrated hinges allow the refrigerator face to be recessed from the side/end panels. This is quite tricky. not sure if Liebherr allows you to recess the frig from the end panel.

Billy.. sorry to hear about your dishwasher. This has been my biggest worry, about everything being perfectly flush, so that is why I was dwelling on this fridge issue so much. I did end up going with the Fisher & Paykel drawers b/c they fit into the space the best.

kaismom...your solution was so simple, can't believe I didn't think of that! To your comment about the countertop overhang. I do see what you mean, but the look I would rather have is the cabinet fronts being flush with the fridge but your point about the fridge door swing with the countertop overhang is something I had not thought about, so thank you! I will bring this up with my KD
