I don't know what color cabinet would look best

I just can't make a decision. Our kitchen and eat-in dining room is one open area. Our dining room set is dark cherry. I've been told that dark cherry kitchen cabinetry would be too much for the room. But the problem is that I can't find a wood color that would complement the dining room set in the Brookhaven line. I really like working with the kitchen place that carries this brand. I would hate to move on to another place because I can't find the right color.

We brought home two doors to look at, cordovan on cherry on the left (which matches the dining room set almost exactly) and candlelight on maple on the right (which we were going to go with since the maple was less expensive, but I just don't like the grain). The candlelight color does nothing against the black appliances which we are keeping. It is more brown. Btw we are going to electroplate the fridge black.

Does anyone know about the colors of the Brookhaven line?

Please tell me what you think, if the cordovan is too much for the room. And what other wood color might work. I would like a color (not paint)that is different but would complement the dining room set. In the next year or two we plan on putting a desk and cabinet section against the wall where the china cabinet is and move the china cabinet to where the buffet is now.

Thanks so much for your help. This is truly stumping me and I'm getting so frustrated that I can't move on and want to just cancel everything. :(

P.S. I thought I sized these two cabinet pictures the same way as the room pictures but apparently not. Sorry.

Between those 2, the one on the right is nicer. The other one's color looks fake to me.
Don't worry about matching. If it did, it would be a sea of same all over and not as nice as you'd think. I think doing a different color wood is preferable. Matchy matchy is a very 80s look. That is why people don't even have all the kitchen cabs match anymore, much less their whole house of furniture.
We have mostly antiques in our house and a few match with each other, but most are their own color/tone. When we bought our bedroom set, we purposely did not get the matching bed because it would have been too much...

I would agree that matching the cabinets to the dining room would be too much. Wood that is all the same just blends in the background. Your cherry will look more lovely if the kitchen is something different and vice-versa. Different wood tones together is normal - especially because these will never be "touching" (I think you have to be more careful to make sure floors and cabinets don't clash.) If I were you I would go to the cabinet place and forget about the dining room. Open your mind - consider all they have in natural or stained wood - and pick something you think is beautiful and go from there.

If you want something lighter, consider maple natural or with light stain. Cherry is always beautiful, but a little more expensive, but try natural or other tone that you just love. And oak gets a bad rap but with the right door style and finish, the grain can be striking. Good luck.

First off, it would be a good start to know where your garden is located, so people could actually give advice on transitional seasonal color effects that work in your zone. Bulbs might be a useful spring burst of color, and spring bulbs that reliably return each spring might rely more on basics such as more reliable daffodils and Muscari, which pretty much work across the country.Removing a portion of the lawn adjacent the existing foundation shrubs and adding a low growing ground cover and bulbs might be a good start. Lower growing spring or summer flowering shrubs could also be added as a foreground framing the existing shrubs at the house. Personally I think it would be more interesting to add a few larger growing mounding low perennials or arching flowering shrubs with ground cover out at the mailbox, rather than a bed of all one type of annuals, something like dwarf Spiraea or Weigelia or similar. If you did want annuals in that spot, something taller and lacier such as Cosmos or Cleome or Nicotiana would look good there. There are also plenty of useful summer flowering shrubs such as Hibiscus syriacus or Philadelphus, or spring flowering herbaceous perennials such as Paeonies or Oriental poppies that could be used for seasonal color. Perennial asters and chrysanthemums are classic fall color effects, along with shrubs that give fall color. As to tree placement, it would make more sense to look at tree locations based on views from the house as well as from the street. Framing the house at each side and again at the street seems very static and may not frame or screen views from the house or elsewhere in the front garden, nor give shade where it makes the most sense. Not enough information given to really help with tree placement, and in my opinion tree locations, sizes and types should be based on much more than just this one street view of the house. If you have a good local or regional botanical garden near you, they are almost always a good venue to get ideas of plant/tree choices for different seasons that actually work. Photoshopped photos may be a starting point to help you visualize possibilities, but aren't as good as seeing the real thing to know how it will actually look. We were going to repaint our perimeter cabinets and add new cabinets in other parts of the kitchen. I planned to have the new cabinets contrast the perimeter. I went back and forth between dark cabinets or white cabinets for the perimeter (existing dark oak cabinets). Finally the thing that made me go white perimeter and dark island was one simple thing. I like to use dark rich colors on the walls. When the cabinets were dark oak, I never could use browns or taupes. Plus, my adjacent dining room is chocolate brown, and to have the dark color continue through the kitchen on the cabinets, might be too much, I felt. So, after much staring at my space and imagining how each option would work, I went with the white perimeter and peppercorn island. I love the fact that I can paint my kitchen walls any color and it will work. I just hated the fact that my kitchen cabinets in my "old" kitchen dictated my color choices. I like to change my colors every now and then. So take into account how the other rooms nearby are decorated/painted. Think about what color you might want to paint that room. See what works with your choices. Good luck, and like so many others have said, keep looking at photos and real kitchens...see what speaks to your heart.

There's a reason that greige colors like Revere Pewter and Edgecomb Gray are so popular. LOTS of people have both warm and cool colors in their rooms. Few of us get to start from scratch and most people need to find a way to combine existing non-changeable finishes (floors, cabinets, countertops), plus furniture they already have. Often that's a mix of warm and cool colors. The greige colors look good with both, and when you add or remove something from the mix, it all still works together. You may find that with a new wall color that your existing trim, kitchen counter etc. look just fine.

These options are so similar that I have to really look hard, as I thought all three pics are the same. The space between the windows is such a small sliver, it looks funny to show that space. I would just use wide trim that covers the gaps.

Thanks for your responses. I agree, it would be too much. But we both just tend toward the darker colors. I will be more open the next time we go to the kitchen place. i think I'm driving the kitchen guy crazy. He said I am very particular (meaning matchy matchy??? !) Funny how we get set in our ways... Although I would LOVE to have a white kitchen, but not with two young boys and a DH who works outdoors most of the time! Thanks so much.

This is taking the thread another direction but here I go.

I didn't shop around for my cabinets because I was satisfied with the price and quality and the kd was so super nice to me and gave me so much time. After the sale, before the cabinets came, I decided to cancel having the company he worked for do the install--which I was billed for separately from the cabinets. He turned into such a jerk! Had to get the store manager involved, etc. I felt really dumb for being so loyal to this guy who turned on me.

So, in a nutshell, the one company may be a pleasure to work with, but it does not mean that there is not another company that may also be a pleasure to work with. That's my advice. Your cabinets are more important than the temporary sales relationship.

I see what you are saying sab. In the back of my mind, I'm saying the same thing to myself. The problem is, I haven't found THE color anywhere else. Although I'm not sure I even know what would look best. What I need is the perfect decorater to come to my house with all of the samples from the store and show them to me. Would they do that? I'm so not good with this.
