Gap between countertop and range - what can be done?

Our granite countertop was installed today. I noticed this evening that on one side of the range, the counter does not go all the way to the range's edge. There is a gap of a few millimeters. On the other side of the range, the counter goes all the way to the edge of the range and there is no gap.

I don't like the gap. Short of asking them to recut and reinstall, is there anything else that can be done?

is the range level? If it is--then maybe they can scribe some molding to close the space?

Move the range so that it is centered in the cutout with the same small gap on either side. You don't want the granite actually touching your range---there is no "wiggle room" to get it in and out of the hole and you can scratch it more easily. The only time you want granite next to a range with zero gap is if it's a slide in or drop in. All others will need a very slight gap--your self described few millimeters.

I agree, 1/4 inch even is big; 1/2 inch seems HUGE. Can you shift the range a little? Also, some of those T strips are wider than others. I had to return one set I ordered bcs it was too wide to fit. So do some looking around. They're easily found online, or at Bed Bath & Beyond, and they're inexpensive, and they work really well. (One nice thing; they can be removed to clean on and beside) This one is 2-1/2 inches wide; that ought to work. same brand, I think; different catalog I'm having trouble right now finding the SKINNY strips I needed to use.

This discrepancy should have been caught when the countertop guys templated the countertop. Are your walls that messed up, or is it because of a flawed cabinet installation? Regardless, a 1/2" gap is ridiculous. You can have a new top properly fitted. Bingo, problem solved. Is there a backsplash to be installed? That can hide a gap, with the exception of the gap at the end of the countertop. Depends on if that edge will be visible or not. Everything else is a compromise of sorts in that you can reduce the gap in the back but you overhang in front. You can slide it back but then your cabinet overhang at the front of the cabinets will be skewed. You can scribe the countertop as is, slide the entire thing back 1/2" to close the gap on the right. That'll give you even reveal on the front overhang, but it'll be 1/2" less front cabinet overhang than you have now. Or you can do a fraction of that 1/2". Slide it back 1/4" for a 1/4" gap on the back left, and lose 1/4" of overhang at the front of the cabinets. You can notch the drywall on the back right wall and slide the top back. Same effect as the previous recommendation, but you're notching the drywall instead of scribing the countertop. Another alternative is to use mud to float out the back wall. Essentially you're making the back wall "thicker" to bring the wall forward to meet the countertop. It'd have to be done in several steps, and you'd have to feather the half-inch thickness down over the run of the wall. But that also depends on windows on the wall and how the existing window trim will be affected. There are fixes and there are band-aid repairs. Mongo

Why not? What kind of caulk are you all using that doesn't peel up with a minimal effort? I want that! Dork, if you don't want to glue your range in (and of course you don't! You just want to keep crud out of the crack), use whatever it is I keep using on my icky old kitchen sink--kitchen 'n' bath caulk. It comes right up whether you want it to or not. But normally nothing goes in the crack. If you DO go rogue and caulk it, TEST the caulk on a counter sample to be sure it won't leave a stain and that it can in fact peel off when it's time to refresh. As far as counter to cabinetry panels by the fridge, I personally (and probably incorrectly) would caulk it because I do NOT want spills dripping back there. Yeah, I'm a rebel. But we're not talking heavy duty stick-it-down caulk. Just the wimpy cheap stuff.

Here's what our fabricator did: Before counter installation: this was an existing window and we didn't move it. The distance from the countertop to the bottom of the window opening would be less than an inch. Right after the counter and window sill were installed. Our fabricator laminated a piece of material of the thickness needed to the bottom of the sill - similar to what is done when making the counter edge. I think it would look right under each window as an extension of the sill and ending where the sill ends like ours does or under the whole group of windows. It may be easier to fabricate doing it the first way as it would be a very long thin piece for one piece to extend under all 5 windows. It looks like your filler will have to be thinner than your granite slabs so it may be difficult/expensive for the fabricator to make it extend much wider than the sill for the stacked appearance you want. Our fabricator did say that he was able to make thin pieces with our stone that can't be made with every stone when he made the thin pieces to trim our rangetop. He fabricated these pieces which are less than 1/2" high and ~3/4" wide (the slab thickness) and a bit over 2' long to fix a slight error they made when making the rangetop cut out. But I think the thin piece for the window sill wasn't as much of a concern for him because it was laminated onto the sill when it was made and didn't have to be carried around separately like the rangetop trim pieces.

I'm not very well versed in all of this, so I'm not sure what you mean by asking if the range is level and I'm not sure what scribing molding means. Do you mean molding from the cabinets?

I looked at it again. The counter is pretty much right up against the range on one side. On the other side, there is a gap, but it's only in the front. There is no gap in the back, so the range cannot actually be moved from side to side to decrease the gap. Although the granite is touching the range almost all the way around, I think the range can still be taken out.

Sorry - I'm not informed enough to know if there's a simple solution or whether this is a big deal or what. I just think it looks a little strange and uneven.

I'd call the countertop guys back to look at it. It sounds like they maybe didn't cut the range opening exactly square.

Hi Momtoalex,

When I first got my DW, I was devasted. I thought that
it had to much room on either side. It was not until
I saw other DW that I realized it was normal to have a
tiny bit of space. I know this is a range but maybe seeing
other ranges can help you see if yours is way off.

Does your range have little feet on the bottom? My Bosch
does which can help make the range more level. There should
also be an anti tip device too. How to check if something
is level would be to use an actual tool. This way you can
help center the range. A simple way if you do not have
a level would be to find a marble. If the marble rolls to
one side, you know it needs to be lifted a bit.

I would also take some photos for GW. That way we can
see what the issues are exactly and help you find a
solution. If the space is huge, you can buy a simple product
or have your counter people fashion a sliver of stone to
help cover the space.

Meanwhile here are some images of ranges that might help
you determine how terrible the space you have is. A slide
in range should have little to no space but a regular oven
range is going to have milimeters of space on either side.
Good luck and hopefully you can get this fixed.

We folded a strip of "Cushy Cupboard" and it slides in there very nicely. We put it on both sides of the stove.

After lining cupboards & drawers with this stuff, I had a lot left over. It does not melt when the oven is hot...something I was worried about at first. It's easy to slide out and wipe off when necessary.

Since our stove is white and the granite has a lot of white in it, this blends in fairly well.
