Woodharbor Wood Mode or crystal Cabinets?

Hi there, We are in the middle of a kitchen project and were going to go with a custom cabinetmaker and was out this afternoon and drove by a kitchen place, stopped in and they had Wood Mode cabinets that were Amazing. So I googled them and found these makers as well. I am hoping to hear any information you have custom vs Woodharbor Wood Mode and Crystal.

Do you mean Brookhaven by woodmode? I've never heard of Woodharbor.

We have Woodmode cabinets in a very tiny kitchen in a cottage. As it is on an island it was the only choice at the time...but a good one. We have been happy with the craftsmanship. I do not know the Woodharbor name- maybe it came along after our renovation - 5 years ago.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Yes, I know the greenest thing to do would be to keep the cabinets that I have. However, they are literally falling apart (we just glued a drawer back together), are bubbling from steam near the sink, are turning from white to yellow at inconsistent rates (we have one cabinet where the door on the left is white, and the one on the right is yellow), and the thermofoil is separating from the doors. They are builder-grade and almost 13 years old. So keeping them for the next 25 years seems unlikely, although I have considered refacing them. But that won't help with all the problems. What we do plan to do to be "green" is to move them to our garage for storage there. I feel better about doing that then just getting rid of them- what we can't use we will see about donating. Thanks for the IKEA suggestions. I looked at their site and they do seem to be trying to reduce/remove formaldehyde from their products, which is great. I don't mind the look, and the price would be nice. Thanks also for the suggestion for Amicus Green Building Center. I'll have to check them out. They do sell Executive Cabinetry (aka EcoFriendly Cabinetry) which I'm already considering, so it's good to see another recommendation for them. Thanks for the suggestions for metal cabinets. I just can't see myself with them though, despite how green they might be. Someone said they are cool, and I see them as cold, and I don't like anything cold. :( Regarding all the suggestions for local cabinet makers, I'm having trouble finding one. I did find a small local (PA) cabinet maker that uses formaldehyde-free plywood and only services nearby areas, but while they had a lifetime warranty on glides and such, they only had a few year warranty on defects in workmanship or materials, which gave me pause (the woman I spoke to on the phone did not even sound sure what their warranty on that would be). Can anyone recommend one in the Baltimore area that might have a good warranty? FYI, I don't think I need "custom" - I am mostly looking at custom or semi-custom because it seems to be hard to get 1) plywood construction, and 2) good quality finishes (I'm looking for an opaque finish) without going higher end. I know there is a debate over plywood vs particleboard or MDF, but all I know is that plywood has lower allowable formaldehyde emissions under CARB than either particleboard or MDF. I thought also that plywood naturally emitted lower formaldehyde than those other materials (not sure about that, but that's what I think might be the case). In addition, what I have now is particleboard, and we have been disappointed in it (I know, the quality of particleboard can vary a great deal!). Self cleaning ovens generate a great deal of heat. Heat can and will scorch wood, mdf, and paint. To prevent that heat from building up, it is recommended to open the doors and drawers adjacent to an oven while it is in the self cleaning cycle. If you don't and your cabinets scorch, yes, that is abuse and would not be covered under warrant. By any cabinet company. Wood expands and contracts over the seasonal moisture cycle. Just as you will get a gap in your crown molding in winter because it's dry, and a door will stick in summer because it's moist, cabinets will do the same thing. Although top coatings are meant to have a certain amount of flex to them, they do not have enough flex to not get hairline breaks in the finish where you have two pieces lf wood joining. That is 100% normal. You cannot expect wood to not behave like wood. This is normal. Cabinets do get wet occasionally, yes. But you are expected to not let them stay that way. You are expected to dry them, as part of a normal care routine just as you would any other furniture in your home. And you are expected to not constantly slop water onto the cabinet below the sink base, and to teach your children to do the same. And not let the dog jump on them and scratch them with his nails. That is not normal wear and tear. That IS abuse that will result in guaranteed damage that will not be covered by any cabinet warranty. If you feel that you cannot properly care for your kitchen furniture investment, then there are cabinets that will stand up to a more continual water presence and searing heat. You find them in commercial kitchens everywhere. They are stainless steel.

Another vote for Plain and Fancy. Last time I quoted them against Wood-Mode, they were substantially less. P&F was $12K and Wood-Mode was $18K. Here's a photo from the Plain & Fancy website. If you are near an Amish cabinetry maker, you may find they can do the kitchen for the same cost I have Crystal Cabinet Works beaded inset cabinets and I'm very pleased. I purchased mine during a "free paint" and "free inset" promotion. They allow you to combine their Keyline (less customization, lower price) and full custom offerings that keeps their pricing in the mid to mid-high category. (They were far less than the Fieldstone). They have a good reputation here and among my preferred contractors. There is a good thread here on pricing comparison of white painted shaker cabinets.

Hi there, and thanks for your response. The companies are Woodharbor, Wood Mode and Crystal Cabinets. Woodharbor makes cabinets and doors as well.

Thank you, I loved the finnish on the wood mode cabinets. She explained that the process that they use to get the final finnish process would be so expensive. Also I like the idea of the durability. We have 4 kids and with them all wanting to be cooks our kitchen takes a beating.

Brookhaven is the lower cost line by Wood Mode. I have some of both in my kitchen and am happy with both. I've heard of Crystal here and they seem to be well thought of. I beleive they are regional. Woodharbor I have not heard of and they may also be regional. Wood Mode is an establish national brand. You won't be disappointed with them, but do compare the Brookhaven and see if you need the extras in the Wood Mode or if you can save some money on Brookhaven. Both of their lines come framed or frameless, something I didn't see in other lines. Mine are all frameless.

Woodmode makes the best cabinet. The finish they put on them is superior. If you want the highest quality this is what you should buy.

I have Maple veneer frameless Brookhaven cabinets in the kitchen. We went with slab fronted on some cabs and all the drawers, and glass fronted with reeded on the other cabinets.

The Woodmode cabs were gorgeous. The edges are different than the Brookhaven. The Woodmode has a more rounded, finished looking edge. Also, if you want the grain to be all in the same direction, you have to go Woodmode. With our Brookhaven cabs, the maple grains on the doors are verticale and the drawers are horizontal. The sales person made that distinction clear to us. I realllly wanted them all in the same direction but the Woodmode costs a LOT more. We didn't get a quote on the Woodmode, though, cause we just knew we couldn't afford them and they weren't necessary for us.

FWIT, we love the Brookhaven cabinets! We've had them in for exactly a year now. The light stain is even and a very nice shade, exactly what we had hoped for. The veneer doesn't look "fake" at all and is very soft to the touch. And it never bothers me that the grains don't don't go in the same direction from cabs to drawers. They are lovely cabinets and we'd get them again.

What state are you in? There are probably ways to save on your cabinets if you are in the same state that they are made in. Crystal Cabinets are made in MN.

I am currently installing Woodharbor cabinets in our new build. So far, I have been very happy with the quality of the cabinets. My only concern has been the bottoms of the drawers. On some of my very wide drawers, it doesn't seem like there is much for extra support. If I were to do it over again, I would still get the Woodharbor cabinets, but I would probably upgrade the drawer bottoms.

These cabinets are made in Mason City, Iowa and I am in central Iowa as well. For me it was worth it to support a "local" business. We have a combination of painted inset and stained oak inset cabinets.

We have had our Woodmode cabinets for 11 years and they have been great. Would definitely recommend them.
