White Shaker Cabinets In Progress

Well, we are officially underway with installation! The cabinets are BM White Dove solid wood with 1" shaker doors. They are from Kingswood Kitchens. I am really impressed with them so far. There are a couple of areas that need to be addressed, like a small chip in a prominent area. I was wondering if the rough area you see in the 1st picture is considered "normal" for painted wood? The area is about the size of a quarter. It looks scratched in the picture, but irl it is more dimpled. WDYT?

Looks great! Can't wait to see them all installed! As far as the cab door in question, it looks like damage to me (but I'm definitely an amateur). What color are your walls--I really like it.

Your cabs are exactly what I want!!! Seeing how gorgeous yours are just reaffirms my decision. Of course I haven't picked a brand yet, may go custom depending on price. That small area looks like damage to me also, but I'm no expert. I know that I wouldn't like it.

Can I ask how wide your rails/stiles are on the cabs? (Is that the right term? You know, the raised frame part around the panel.)

What granite did you choose?

@Terri Wilson We did a pretty large order of axstad too. $13,000 which was available over several months. Definitely delayed during a pandemic. I posted my old kitchen and was advised to check out the axstad and after going to several cabinet/ kitchen companies and seeing what we could get it, it was an easy decision. Getting an experienced installer to do the customizing we wanted has been a challenge as well, but we are in the thick of it right now. I think we will love it when it's done. We are also replacing a large upstairs cabinet, 2 built in hutches and a laundry room, several with base cabinets that needed to be cut to fit the proper depth. Good luck with your project.

This is a great thread and I've read it with lots of interest. I'm not as interested in IKEA vs. the rest as I am in frameless vs. framed. I grew up in Europe with frameless cabinets and have now lived in the US for nearly 30 years with various framed cabinets. I still like frameless better from what appears to me be a usability factor, but maybe that is all in my head, but the things that I'd like more information on is to figure out if this is just in my head. What is the inside dimension of a drawer for a say a 30" cabinet for the different brands, or use the 36" or an 18" as an example. The same goes for how much space is wasted in say in the 171" direction and the 143" direction due to the framed parts? It might not be much, but having gone from a large kitchen where I had plenty of storage and the frame was smaller to a smaller kitchen with framed cabinets that has more frame (I assume to save money on the doors) this is something that is really pushing me towards frameless feeling like it has less wasted space and be more comparable across lines of frameless cabinets vs. framed ones where that seems to vary by the manufacturer. One thing that to this day annoys me with the framed cabinets is the lip on the bottom shelf. I love it when I visit my mom and friends in Europe how easy it is to slide out a stack of plates from the bottom shelf and not have to go through the lift motion first.

@Nichole Campos does it matter to you if the bottoms of the upper panels are finished or are raw unpainted plywood? I have been wondering about that question ever since I learned you can pay extra to have the vendor finish the bottoms. There was a long discussion on a HOOUZZ post. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/1072657/should-the-underside-of-white-painted-semi-custom-upper-cabinets-be-fi I don't know if it would matter to you or not. I am curious to hear what you think. This from a person who never even knew finished bottoms on upper cabinets was even possible until I read this post.

Where is the damage? If it is a door it can be replaced. I have Dura Supreme Dove White Cabinets. A wrong size cabinet had to be reordered. I was afraid that the color would be off but it wasn't. But what did happen was that another cabinet got damaged while installing the replacement caabinet. A company called Final Touch came out and did the touching up.

Ahhhh---yummy! My white shaker cabinet order is going in on Tuesday...I can't wait! Looking forward to pictures of your finished product.

Thanks, it is exciting! The spot is on the door (thankfully), but it is more like they didn't sand enough in that area instead of damage... The cabinet rep who came to measure, said that if anything came in the wrong size etc, he would be the one responsible. I hope their customer service is as good as he made it sound.

flwrs n co: The wall color is BM Grey Tint. It has only tinted primer and 1st coat so far. After cabs are installed they will come back to do final coat. It was very painful to choose the wall color! Too many grays!! I tried a bunch of darker grays until I realized I needed to go much lighter.

breezygirl: The rails/stiles are 2-3/8" and the upper cabinets are 42". I like classic kitchens (a bit boring to some, but...), so I am going with Soapstone and possibly marble on the island. I want a contrasting island counter, and I spoke with a fabricator today that works exclusively with soapstone, marble, and travertine. He said he has a environmentally "green" marble sealer that actually prevents etching! He said it has a guarantee. Not sure, hoping I can test it. He said it can handle permanent marker and not stain! If that is true I am going for marble!

I am about to place my order with Kingswood Kitchen and am very much interested in how your experience has been. The designer came up with a very nice design for me and the price seems fair. Customer service has been lacking since the initial proposal and I need to do some tweaking of the plan. The cabinet selection process has been very frustrating... I am hoping Kingswood will do the right thing with your blemished door.

I love the cabinet doors so much especially since I like Shaker Style Doors. I need to look into Kingwsood Kitchen cabinets since your looks great. Please let us know if Kingswood does the right thing by you. You can let them know that you posted on a public forum.

I may not get back to fixing up kitchen until closer to the end of the year since it looks like I have to remove the carpets in my Master bedroom and other rooms upstairs so I can breath. But this kitchen forum gives me ideas and lets me see that I actually like many styles but I still love the shaker style door.

Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to see your kitchen totally finished.
