Issues w/depth of base cab vs. depth of mw drawer

My KD just texted re: this issue. The base depth is 23. 5/16 the depth for MWD is according to installation is 23. 1/2. Does this mean the MW will stick out by 3/16?

Shim the bases away from the wall 3/16" and put some molding at the end of the run.

But won't that affect the corner cab being pulled forward which then affects the run of cabs perpendicular? I'm working with some tight clearances. Can I just cut the back panel off for the deptht of the mw? That should give me the extra 3/16 ?

I've done both in the last year - custom cabinets in my kitchen and Ikea in the kitchenette in the basement. My kitchen cabinets were built by local Amish cabinet makers and I could have any size I wanted. Wall cabinets were 13" deep standard, which is what you want with inset since you lose some depth. It was a 10% upcharge for inset cabinets (which I only did on the wall cabinets), a 10% upcharge for painted cabinets, and a 10% savings for frameless (which I did on the base cabinets). It was $11,000 or $12,000 for my 19 cabinets (some of which are very large because I have 10' ceilings) and all the trim, and here's a picture to give you an idea of what I got: For my Ikea basement I bought 7 cabinets and spent about $2000 (that's what my budget says but I didn't go back and add it up) for all the cabinets and trim. It was new construction so I planned the space so the Ikea cabinets with their limited standard sizes would fit well. Here's a picture of that: So what's the difference? I had the fun of loading and unloading the Ikea boxes in my minivan and putting the Ikea cabinets together. My custom cabinet boxes are 3/4" plywood and look like they'll last forever. My Ikea cabinet boxes are 1/2" particle board that made me nervous when I put granite on them. I figured when I attached two together it made 1" particle board, and that made me feel better. The plastic legs on Ikea cabinets made me nervous too. My wood cabinet doors can be touched up or repainted when my kids clobber them. My Ikea doors can be replaced easily. The hinges and drawer glides are about the same. My wood drawers are beautifully made and heavy-duty. The Ikea drawers aren't nearly as sturdy - I wouldn't load them up like I do my wood drawers (NOTE: Oops, I goofed, and I retracted this statement below - the drawers are sturdy). The greatest advantage to Ikea is that there is no waiting and you can quickly make changes as you go along if you need to. So I would definitely take the time to price it out both ways. The difference probably isn't astronomical, and then you can decide if the inset are worth it.

We have a small kitchen with two inside corners, and were limited on drawer widths by some of our other choices. We didn't really think ahead of time about what would go in each drawer -- we were more focused on getting rid of our fixed-shelf framed blind corners. So we have been working on this in the last week as we are moving back into the kitchen. We have two 18" drawers -- one for silverware, and one for dishtowels and sponges (just to the side of the sink.) They work well. We have one stack of four drawers 15" wide (three small drawers and one deeper one on the bottom). We are using the top drawer for knives. The next two hold cooking implements, and we had to really work to find dividers that would hold our various tools. We have to be careful not to stack stuff too high inside the shallow drawers. For instance, we use a set of 5 Oxo metal measuring cups, and we can't put all 5 in a stack and still close a small drawer. The bottom, deeper drawer has been designated by my daughter as "her drawer". She has all kinds of kid cooking accessories such as placemats, tiny baking pans, teeny tiny ramekins, apron, etc. (She's a chef in training!) As far as she's concerned, it's not big enough, but I'm fine with it. We have one stack of three drawers 12" wide (one small, two big). The top is for coupons (we'll see if seriously downsizing the "junk" drawer keeps it from overflowing!), the middle is a bread drawer, and the bottom is for onions and potatoes. So far so good. Baggies are going in the rollout shelves in the pantry. I still have too many boxes and run into problems fitting them together! Hope this helps... Good luck with your decision making.

Thanks for the headsup, angela12345. I measured the GD and went to HD to measure the interior dimension of a 30" sink base cabinet. My oh my, a 30" sink base is TINY! But, it will have to do for now. The 33" sink base has more space inside and I wish we could put it in our layout without my being so bothered. Sigh. Alas, I really can't stand how the spacing of the sink base is uneven in relation to the already lopsided window on the wall. It makes me feel I am living in the winchester mystery house! So far, I have ascertained that it can hold our trash, recycle bin and compost pail, with a smidge of room left for fire extinguisher. Definitely no room for insta-hot water heater and filter. So, we nix that from our wish list. I am looking for a single bowl undermount. After some online research, I found a kindred sink KCUS30A-10/10BG that I like but I don't know if it's available online or not. I wish I could use the ticor sink but the one I like needs a 33" sink base. Bummer. The kindred sink I am interested in will have interior dimension of 27"W x 16"L x 10"H. Lowering the cabs creates potential problems for you and for future buyers--like where to put the KitchenAid mixer, the coffee maker, etc. etc.? They won't fit in a 12" or even in most cases a 15" space. By lowering the cabinets you make that space somewhat useless, not just because things won't fit under the cabinets but also because if you're more than about 5'4", lower cabinets will interfere with your ability to see the back half of the counter and thus with your ability to use the counter. If it's your "forever house" and you don't own counter gadgets that low cabinets would interfere with, do what you want, but otherwise I would be careful. I've heard of very tall couples RAISING the cabinets, but that doesn't make the space underneath too small to use, and in any case they usually raise the counters too so it comes out the same. Your DH's complaints are the reason behind two things: (1) why people don't store everyday dishes on upper shelves, and (2) why people invented step stools. Most people store only occasionally used things on higher shelves--holiday serving plates, party glassware, weird appliances such as the fondue set, etc. Some people have glass doors and reserve the top shelves for items that are purely decorative. This is something to take into account when planning a remodel--do you have enough space ON LOWER SHELVES for the items you'll be using every day? Oh, and... do you have a handy place to store your folding step stool? :-)

Does that MW Drawer depth include the front of the drawer that slides out and the handle on it? If so, then it's not an issue b/c that part and the front trim sit on the outside of the cabinet box. I don't know if a picture will help, but this is how mine is installed in a standard-depth cabinet:

Buelh, is that a 30 or 24 in.? And there was no modification to the cabinet back? Also your cabs appear full overlay with 2 fillers in the corner. This is to increase the angle so the mw drawer can pull out? Or is the mw wider than the cabinet and needed to have fillers on both sides to accommodate ?

Books, not sure it addresses the question exactly, but the 24" drawer and the 30" drawer are the same except for the front face. (Guts are the same size).

Inset is a whole different ballgame. It needs the additional cabinet depth.

Works in inset with back of opening cut out.unless trying to do flush then buy the Wolf with the extra accessory. Sharps install diagrams are accurate, download them. Wolf's are also fine except there is little info on the flush inset accessory part.

Sorry, I didn't realize Boops2012's cabinets were inset. Yes, mine are full overlay - except the corner sink base. The corner sink is partial overlay so filler isn't needed on the right next to the drawer base cabinet, but there is 1" of filler on the left (cab door hinge side) on the MW drawer run to allow the sink door to open fully b/c the MW drawer sticks out so far.

Also, yes, my MW drawer is a 30" and yes, it's the same size on the inside as a 24". The 30" just has more trim. And finally, no modifications were needed to install the cabinet.

So it's:
* On the MW side: 31" cabinet w/MW drawer + 1" filler (full overlay)
* Corner: 36" sink base (partial overlay)
* Peninsula: 24" drawer base (full overlay)

Unfortunately, with inset cabinets you lose cabinet depth - so it appears you may have to modify the cabinet as Jakuvall has suggested.

Talk to your KD and contractor about this.
