Just offering moral support. I am sure many experts will weigh in to alleviate your fears.

I had stone ripped out in June and it came out easily. I think it all depends on how "well" it was installed initially -- how much adhesive, what kind, etc. When my original counters were installed, the guy did such a hack job, I was really worried that taking them out would wreak havoc. The new installer was very careful and there was no fallout.

I think that the fact that the guys who installed your counters are the ones taking it back out is helpful. Too bad about the inaccurate templating job. The counters are really gorgeous.

I think the double doors on the end lowers look good. It also looks like they did a good job around the sink, too.

Did they say that anything could be damaged when taking it out?

What kind of glue did they use? Is it possible there is
some chemical solvent that could loosen the glue or peel
it away so that the counter can be removed?

And lastly they are probably the one who know best how to
remove it as they were the installers. It will be
wonderful, just a little glitch in a kitchen that is on
it's way to being fantastic. Be strong this too shall pass.

Since the glue probably hasn't had much time to cure I would think it shouldn't be a problem (but I'm no expert). My 4' wide panel under the bar overhang was glued for a few days. It was a 0.5" too short. My KD just "popped" it off. I was surprised how easily it came off. The cabinet wasn't damaged. Also I had an undermounted sink moved a few days later after it was glued on - the counter people didn't seem to have a problem with that either.

Weedmeister - thanks for your approval of the doors. That had me worried as you know! I agree that they did a very nice job w/ the sink. Cross your fingers for me that I get through all this relatively unscathed!

If they get it out well, and replace it with the right thing and it's just as beautiful and shiny, and they don't charge me more than they were going to or even give me a small discount for the inconvenience (or not, frankly), I think I will be able to highly recommend them to anyone. I'd visited other stainless fabricators in town and theirs looked as good if not better but with a better price and degree of built-in service. What happened w/ the countertop - one small mistake - had exponential negative consequences (everything got wonky because of it, in various locations) and I do believe that even people with years of experience can have a once-in-a-blue-moon bad day. The fact that they're willing to be - it sounds like - 100% accountable and professional (no guilt-tripping as I've experienced on occasion w/ so-called professionals in the past) makes them a top-notch company, if all goes as I *think* it now will (can you tell I'm a bit gun shy?! That's cause of how this whole kitchen's gone so far - not just them. I think I'm cursed or have bad karma for doing the kitchen when we should be saving for emergencies!!!). Anyway you're very sweet, thank you for the positive juju!

They should be here any minute. I'm kind of scared and embarrassed to see them - is that ridiculous? I feel like I got the guy busted - even though I know he's not in trouble (his boss really loves him and trusts him and knows it was a fluke). Still...if I were a dog, my tail would be between my legs - lol. Hey everyone -

Ok it's silly cause I know none of you really care (!) but I'll tell you anyway...they came and DESTROYED (just kidding)...they came and removed the countertop with no problem. Actually it could have been hard but the moment I saw the top bending I was all "aaaack!" and left to go pick up my son from school. Came back and all that was left was the substrate and dried on snakes of glue.

Actually, note to self: the substrate should come out further to support the new overhang that there will be - so i'd better remember to ask them to be sure to replace that as well! Or maybe they just left it there to give me a surface temporarily - I don't know.

The guys were really nice, too - and not pissy or defensive which is what I feared. So whew for now!

It's all gone? Shoot, I am late in asking a couple of questions about it. I studied, and enlarged your pics every which way, but I couldn't figure out if you had a marine edge along the front edge. And if you did, how was that resolved at the corners where it met the sink in front?

I'm planning on a metal countertop and would like to have a marine edge, but can't figure out what happens at the sink join for an undermount installation. I've been folding up card stock trying to work it, and so far no luck, or at least nothing that I think could be made to work in actual metal.

I loved that counter and your next one will be even more handsome, I'm sure.

liriodendron - Igloochick has a marine edge as far as I recall, she really likes it. I was going for a look I'd seen from photos of 1913 kitchens so did't do it myself - i'm sorry! Thank you for your kind comment!

The sink has clear caulk...

I am so pleased that this is working out so well for you. You managed to find yourself one upstanding and honest fabricator. Since you had already paid them, they could have taken the opportunity to screw you over but they did the right thing and are fixing their mistake.

Now if I may offer a suggestion for that sharp edge on the front. I know you want to avoid any dents in that edge, but a strip of additional substrate won't prevent that. If the hit on the edge of the steel is enough to bend it, it will bend whatever substrate is behind it. What I'd do is get the fabricators to weld a strip of 1/4" thk stainless right behind the front edge. Then you don't need to bring your substrate out because that strip of steel will fill most of it in, and give you a really strong dent-proof front edge. That shouldn't cost you too much more but would be a great insurance policy. that sharp edge is so attractive and it would be a shame if someting were to hit it hard and dent it.

That is one gorgeous countertop. It's truely stunning. What a great choice for your period kitchen!!

Thank you Ccoombs1! I really appreciate the advice. I'm not sure...I'll feel out the situation and see if I feel I'm not asking too much of them (or can afford it). Sounds very smart and reasonable! They say it will be ready for install this Thursday. Wish me luck that it comes out as nice and shiny as the last one, and that it will FIT! :-/ I'm scared to death. The stress of having to ask them to fix or replace this last one was enough that - don't laugh - I got sick. I just couldn't take this exhausting kitchen project any longer and I'm sure that's what got me sick. That deserves its own thread topic: who all has come down with something from stress!!! Hahaha.

Oooh, theresse, I certainly wouldn't laugh about your getting sick due to the stress. I despise confrontation in situations like that, and I can totally see how it could wear you down. Hope you're feeling better and that your install goes perfectly.
