Hi all,

My kitchen cabs are set for installation in a couple of weeks. (yeay!!) I am going with gray stained perimeter cabs and walnut stained cabs for two islands. I was initially all set on White Macaubus as my stone, thinking I can use the backsplash to warm things up.

My dilemma: Corteccia makes my heart sing. I recently discovered it. I have seen it on plenty of website, but some market it as a marble, and others a quartzite. I NEED a quartzite in my kitchen.
I asked a fabricator that I am potentially using and he says its a quartzite. The stoneyard itself labels is a quartzite. Does anyone know for sure if Corteccia is a marble or a quartzite?

Secondly, given the description of my kitchen above, would you go with the white macaubus/luce de luna or the corteccia.

When you say you need a quartzite, I'm assuming that you're looking for durability?

If that's the case, I believe that quartzites, being natural stone, have varying levels of durability. I would recommend taking home samples of your two front runners and doing lots of tests: etch tests with lemon juice and tomatoes; stain tests with red wine, soy sauce, oils, etc.; scratch tests with a key. Bang a pot on them. Do all the things you hope no one will ever do to your counters and see how the samples hold up.

Caveat: I'm no stone expert. But this is what I did with my stone samples.

BTW: the Corteccia is gorgeous! I've also seen some beautiful Luce de Luna on GW, too. I think for people to comment on one stone versus the other it would help to have pictures of sample cabinet doors (perimeter and island) in front of each slab.

A little clarification might be in order. This section of meat in the cow is one of the main divisions when cutting meat. Therefore it is known as a primal cut. When it is cut as a roast (as opposed to steaks) it is considered a Prime roast. There is confusion and a lot of debate on the matter because prime is also the highest grading given to meats that meet a certain criteria of quality. But Prime rib is such an accepted term for the cut, even if it does not meet prime grading standards, the USDA gives it a pass and doesn't get anal about the title. You can purchase prime graded roasts at top dollar- most grocery outlets sell the lesser grade "choice". Your actual question though about middle cut is an interesting one and hard to track down. There are some theories that I'll toss out to throw around. An old meat cutter's term for this setion of meat (ribs 6 through 12) is "middle meat". It could be that the store was simply being redundant and selling the idea of middle as being pretty good stuff. After all there is center cut this and eye of that. Another idea is that some stores call the second cut or slightly less quality Chuck side of the full 16 pound rib, the center cut. It's a rarely used term but maybe that's where the middle cut term comes from. Below is a brief description of first cut and second cut. First Cut Rib Roast An extremely tender and flavorful roast, First Cut Rib Roast consists of ribs 9-12 from the loin end of the cow. First Cut Rib Roast may also be called Prime Rib, Loin End, or Prime Rib Small End. Not surprisingly, this is one of the most expensive cuts suitable for a beef roast. Second Cut Rib Roast Also known as a Large End Rib Roast, the Second Cut Rib Roast is cut from ribs 6-9, closer to the chuck area of the cow. As a result, this beef roast is slightly fattier and slightly less tender than the First Cut Rib Roast. It remains, however, an excellent choice for cooking a beef roast. It is also a rather pricey cut of beef, though slightly less expensive than a First Cut Rib Roast. Michaelp

We ALWAYS want the sinks and the coktops available for us - whenever we can get it - sinks at template date - cooktops on day of install... Too many "IF's" can happen that can spoil what would have been a nice job... Sinks can be warped (sp?) We don't ask that the sink be totally installed, as we'll actually take the sink back to our shop to use in the undermount cut-out and polishing process... then on the day of install - we "set" the sink and seal it to the stone - but we do not do any plumbing hook ups - that's the plumber's job - just DONT let him use any plumber's putty next to ANY stone - NOT GOOD - the oils in the plumber's putty will stain the stone... As far as cooktops and ranges - Cooktop engineers ALWAYS seem to forget to add an allowance for the little sheet metal screws that stick out of the steel box that they ever so carefully spend hours of time and effort getting the dimensions JUST so... 22 and 17/49ths by 32 and three thousandthss of an inch, I cut a hole to perfect dimensions supplied only to have the whole thing hang up on the protruding screws!!!! Been there - done that ONE too many times - now we insist that the appliances are available for us to have on the day of templating.. sorry for venting, but this brings back bad flashbacks!!! HA! I haven't measured it, Johnny, but it is significantly less....based on how much less hen scratch we buy, I'd guess they eat 30-50% less hen scratch in winter when they have plentiful winter greens available to eat. It varies from year to year depending on how warm the winter is (warmer winter weather obviously means the winter greens grow/regrow faster and provide more for the chickens to eat) and on how much the chickens utilize them. Some years the chickens spend all their time in the greens, eating, digging, scratching and just doing other chicken things, but other years they spend a lot more time roaming around the pastures and even the woodland. I assume when they are in the woodland, they are digging through leaf mold and autumn leaves searching for insects beneath them. I sort of stumbled upon the winter greens accidentally when I planted a deer plot for the deer to have in a severe drought. The deer didn't touch the carefully planted and tended deer plot, but the chickens loved it. So, I took notice and started trying harder to grow more and more winter greens for the chickens. You realize that my chickens are incredibly spoiled, right? I plant big wide rows of lettuce and other mixed greens in late winter and spring in my garden and cut lettuce and various greens to feed to them all spring and summer. (I have to keep the garden gate closed at that time of year to keep the chickens out or the greens don't live long enough to grow big and produce a large harvest.) If you want to be happily greeted by chickens running towards you at breakneck speed, just walk out of the garden with an armload of freshly cut greens of all kinds, and the chickens will come towards you as fast as they can run. The poultry have given me many laughable "Foghorn Leghorn" moments, as the old roosters get stiff-legged as they age and run exactly like the old cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn. When I harvest greens for us humans, I have them hidden in a 5-gallon bucket so that the chickens don't know I am carrying greens up to the house. Otherwise, every trip I make from the garden to the house becomes a big chicken parade, with chickens trailing along behind me hoping I will drop something for them. It is ridiculous how happy you can keep poultry with just a random assortment of plant greens.

Just my opinion, but i don't understand the use of the material vertically that creates the wedge for the roofs. I know that treatment is similar to one of the pictures you liked, but in the picture you like, the material (or at least the same color) comes down the side in a contiguous line and also the other material on the side goes up into the roof line as rafters. The two are woven together. The most recent drawings above need the materials to embrace each other rather than sit on each other. My line of sight keeps starting and stopping with no help from the materials on where to go next. What if the entire front of the garage were cedar (Not the garage door, just the siding) and the sides (below the wedge) were grey and the cedar somehow came down the front of the part of the house on the left, either to the right of the windows (long narrow strip) or down the center between the windows, top to bottom? This suggestion might look awful when drawn. I don't have any drawing tools but i have a very vivid imagination. :-)

I love the Corteccia! It will blend in perfectly with your walnut stained cabinets and the painted gray cabinets. It will bring a warmth to the entire room. Have you thought about a full height backsplash? I think that would be smashing in the Corteccia. Post some photos when you get your cabinets in so we can see what the shades will look like, but based on what you said, I think the Corteccia will be the best. All three are great choices.

I, too, love Corteccia and am contemplating this slab... the place I saw mine says it's marble. I've seen it twice and both times he said, "it will etch, it will stain." I'm trying to decide if I can live with that because this is at the top of my list.

Online, I've seen Corteccia labeled as both marble and quartzite so I'm afraid I have to believe the seller when he says it's marble.

By the way, my sister in law has White Macaubus on her island and it is gorgeous. I'd go with that if she didn't already have it. It's been bulletproof for her. You should seriously consider it if you want easy care.

Thanks for the responses and for the link to karin_mt's very insightful talk. I guess I doubt myself when I hear stories like 'beekeeperswife'. I cook with spices that stain like tumeric, so I dont want to chance it. But when you decide on a Honda, and find out you can get a BMW in the same price (corteccia is $10 more per sq ft, but a different fab is doing the job within the allowance the guy doing the white macaubus), you have to entertain the idea. I guess the scratch test will be the teller.

CK-did you do the scratch test? Or why bother when they are saying it will stain and etch, right...sigh.

Anyhow, below is a picture of the porchswing stain (courtesy of live_wire_oak when I was trying to find the gray stain look). Ill find one for the brown stain.

Hey Jane (if I can call you Jane...)

Stoneyards aren't very good at knowing one rock from another, so I strongly encourage you to give it a go and do the test yourself. It's very easy and it prevents you from relying on information that is potentially incorrect. Empower yourself by getting your own answers!

The slab with the strong linear pattern is very cool. That would make me swoon for sure!

Do you have samples on hand you can try the tests with?

Duh! I have sample doors. The porchswing looks very light though. IRL, its closer to the other pic I posted.

I have White Macaubas with walnut cabinets and love the combination. The Corteccia slab is gorgeous if you prefer warmer coloring. I think either stone will work with the walnut, but I'm not sure about that particular shade of gray. You need to visit the slabs with your door samples, if you have not already done so.

Karin_mt- thanks for chiming in as THE stone expert ;o)

I have to drive 1.5-2 hrs to go to the stone yard. Actually, the closet fab had me set on WM. I just spoke with my builder that said that Im not tied down to the KDs fabricator. So now I can look with more diligence.

Yes, because the gray is a cold look, I thought the corteccia would warm it up a bit. But again, if I find out that the stone indeed is a marble, I may go back to WM, and warm it up with the backsplash.

Kaysd-do you have any pictures of your kitchen?

ck_squared-what color are your cabs?

Hi Jane,
My cabinets are walnut with a mocha lite stain; almost natural looking I hope (they are all in boxes upstairs in the family room!). My GC is pricing out 3 slabs for me including the Corteccia. I have the 2 others as back ups in case I get cold feet with the marble. I did try to do a scratch test with a small piece of Cambria (my perimeter counters) and nothing happened. I forgot to bring a bottle with me both times I went to see the slab.
