kitchen layout...see any ways I could improve??

This is the layout we have come up with for my remodel. (it is basically the same layout that is already there with some very small tweaks...such as size of island) I find that I do most everything, prepping, baking, etc, on the counter between the cook top and the sink. My kitchenaid mixer is kept in that corner and it seems to work. The only problem I find with this layout is that the 66" of counter to the right of my sink doesn't get used much for anything and I find it to be such a waste. Does anyone see any ways I could improve upon the plans??

I also prep/cook between my sink/cooktop, so w/ your layout,
1. I would shift the sink to the right, allowing more countertop to the left of the sink.

yes, the sink will not be centered, but you can center the faucet w/ the window and no one will notice.

2. W/ the 36" sink base, I put the trash on 1 side (18").
(your kitchen is flipped from mine): but w/ your layout, I would have it:
- 18" under sink
- 18" trash under sink,
so you that you can stand in front of the left sink door, while people can still access the trash on the right door (pullout).

3. I would put another trash/recycling in the desk area.
My kids are now trained to use that trash for non-dirty stuff, meaning only food covered stuff goes into the sink trash, while other stuff like broken rubber bands go into the desk trash, so that they stay out of my cooking area.

4. I would make the upper corner cabinet into a 90degree cabinet, so that you wouldn't have a cabinet in your face, since you prep in that area (between cooktop/sink) a lot.

i agree with brent - those junipers really aren't the right scale for that space. Besides, they are too stiff next to those soft Japanese maples. Please consider removing them altogether. The peninsula-like space with the birch should certainly be wider - consider carving out the grass between the birch and the junipers to create a smoother, more natural curve. You might consider some low growing evergreen and deciduous shrubs and perennials in place of the junipers. You don't want to block the view to your front door, rather, to enhance it. Perhaps even some containers which you can change out with the seasons to add another interest to the entrance. Which Japanese maple is that? I don't have a problem with it in that location if it is a dwarf form (it looks like there may be two of them there)or if it is a tree form you can limb it up in time as it grows. It could be a very nice focal point to the left of your entry - I wouldn't worry too much about blocking the bay window a bit - most people keep the shades down in the front of their house for privacy - it looks like you have shutters there anyway. Try walking around your neighborhood for ideas and inspiration. You don't have to be cookie cutter in style to fit in but often you'll get a sense of what does well in your area.

Hi Everybody,,,Funny you should talk about composting. I'm in a master gardener program in my county right now and just yesterday our lecture was all about soils, fertilizers and composting. Here are some helpful hints to "correct" or trouble shoot your compost heap if these things occur. Problem: Cause: Ammonia smell: Too many greens Solution: Add more browns,mix and turn Pile has rotten odor 1.too wet 2.pile compacted 3. food scraps exposed Solution: mix in browns 2.turn pile to aerate 3.bury food scraps in middle of pile Pile doesn't heat up - low temp 1.Not enuf greens 2.not enuf air 3. lack of moisture 4. pile too small Solution: mix in greens, 2.turn pile more frequently 3. add small amounts of water 4.Build pile to be (symbold is the "v" turned so that the open mouth is on the left, don't which character to use on keyboard) greater than 1 cubic yard. Loved LWO's idea to swap sliders for counter height windows. I took that idea and came up with another option for you: an L with an island with the range flanked by windows. This gives you long stretches of counter between range and fridge. I moved the oven to the left of the range so that when the oven door is open, it is somewhat protected from aisle traffic by the adjacent wall. The MW is a MW drawer so that the upper cabs between fridge and pantry can be used for glasses. Handy to fridge, handy to table, handy to DW (for unloading). Dishes and silverware to right of sink, also handy to table and DW. I elongated the island so you have more storage to the left of the DW. You should have 48" or thereabouts between corner by door to back yard and island corner. I don't know if you'll be able to fit an island, even if you take the wall down. You certainly will not be able to fit an island with seating along the back. How wide is the hallway behind the wall? How thick is the wall? (4.5" is standard, but it could be thicker if it has plumbing, HVAC, etc., inside it. What are the real dimensions of the space? If you post a full-measured layout of the space, we can see what will/will not fit. From the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread: By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you. In your full-floor picture above, label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries. Regardless of how you draw it up (by hand, computer, etc.), please be sure all measurements are labeled. (Note: Computer generated layouts often lack key measurements and, sometimes, measure to/from things like the middle of a wall or the middle of a window. Neither are useful. Measure each item and the distances between each item.) Other questions... Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)? What appliances (& their sizes) do you plan to have? Where are you flexible? Can walls/windows/doors/doorways change (move, change size, add, delete)? Microwave:
- should be next to fridge, where DO is.
- so replace one of the ovens w/ an Advantium/speedcooker/microwave, or

put the MW next to fridge on top of 1 oven, while putting the 2nd oven where you have for MW in island.

I don't bake as much, so I don't see the need for the 2nd oven all the time.

hard to read your layout.
what size fridge is that? standard depth?
is there landing space next to fridge area, or is the island the landing space.
not liking having to swing a hot casserole 180degree pass a walkway.

could you make the fridge recess area wider, to allow for even just 12inches of landing space?

just ideas.

Where do you keep your dirty dishes? That would be my 'pots and pans' area, when I'm cooking and baking. Right above the dishwasher, until I can load them. I always seem to have more dishes that room in the dishwasher (especially when I bake cookies/cakes) so I need a dirty dish area. I also don't like to fill up my sink.

You said that the 66" isn't used much at all. Do you use the counterspace to the right of the dishwasher for clearing dishes from table before they go in to be washed? If not, what if the upper cabinet comes down to meet the counter? Easier to put dishes away, and if you add a drawer between the counter and cabinet door, then if something is on the counter you can still open the door, and to store things like napkins, or the corn picks, iced tea spoons, and steak knives you don't use every meal.

Wow...good suggestions!

Amanda, my appliances are already purchased and sitting in my garage (long story!), so there's no changing them!! My fridge is 36" counter depth. There will be a double oven next to that (and I bake a lot!!) and then a 15" counter (landing) next to the ovens. Sometimes I set things there when I first take them out of the oven, but usually I take them over and set them on the cooktop.

bpathome, I love the idea of taking the cabinets down to the counter. I could certainly fill them!! The only problem I would encounter is that I have a flat screen TV under those cabinets, kind of pushed up against the backsplash. I suppose I could relocate the TV. I could put one above the fireplace, but I'm afraid the sound would compete with the family room TV on the other side of the fireplace (it's a two sided fireplace which faces the family room on the other side). Solving one problem always creates another! Ugh!!
