I buy certain varieties of radish seeds in vast quantities. They're cheap, easy to grow, and fast. Ordinarily radishes are a relatively low-return investment for commercial growers, but I raise mine in such a way (which I'm NOT going to tell you) that I can sell them to chefs and gourmands for a price that would financially justify paying 4 times the cost of the seed. Growing for market is a very different game than gardening for your own table. Many of the varieties offered by seed companies are marketed specifically to entice those of us who are always tempted by the new, and it is common to have certain varieties be touted by marketers for traits that have little to do with eating quality - as may well be the case with TANGO. This may in fact be the same strategy as that used by DeBeers to preserve what is in fact an artificially high price for diamonds: the cost may be, for some, temptation enough to sell a few packets. The price per seed has risen by 5 cents since 2009, so apparently somebody's buying them. Probably NOT the 99%.

Hmmm... Does bonsai count? I have not found one yet, but I would pay 500$ for a seedling size amherstia nobilis. Not my most expensive, but the most desperate and reckless purchase, I paid 200$ for a plant halfway across the world, from a 3rd world country where one should never give 200 to a man you don't know based on their word. This someone who has never shipped a day in his life, doesn't know how to take care of plants, I needed to have the plant so bad I told him I would give him a positive review even if the plant never made it to my home. It turned out okay in the end. I paid 300 for a bonsai juniper. I paid 50 for a phalaenopsis so big it looked like a vanda. It had 15 sets of leaves and 7 spikes. It was almost 2 feet tall before spike, the spikes added another foot, the spikes are pretty short. Back in the takashi amano planted aquarium days, I paid 80 for the largest anubias I'd ever seen. Now it's easily a thousand anubias. I need to do something with those.

100K is just a starting point, I believe, for some of the high customized ranges from La Cornue, Moltenis and a few others. (In fact, the 46K for the Grand Palais is the starting point). I thought I stumbled across an example that was in excess of 200K -- can't find the link, but it was gold-plated and was for a Russian billionaire. I also saw recently info on the Meneghini refrigerators. They start at 41K. (Not available in the US, so I'll have to wait -- ha ha). Is there a more expensive fridge? I have almost the same question and situation...except that I am perplexed by light brown scratches that don't appear to be in the top of the finish. I bought a used round mahogany pedestal table with leaf made by a to-the-trade company called Ebanista. The top has pie-crust veneer of what looks like quarter-sawn (ribbon) mahogany, separated by straight sections. It is relatively recently made; the company is only 15 years or so old, I think. So, no worries about ruining any value of an antique. The finish is lacquer. I saw the scratches, and although I didn't want to take on a strip-and-refinish project, I bought it hoping I could buff the scratches out of the finish, wax it with brown wax, and call it a day. Of course in the light of day and with plenty of time to inspect closely, it was worse than I hoped. I cleaned it with Natural Orange surfactant cleaner, then mineral spirits, and buffed it with Zaino auto compound for light scratches (water based). Didn't help at all. It has some very large gouges that are completely in the finish, but there are also these light-brown colored scratches with areas that don't seem to be in the top surface at all, when I look across at eye level. How can that be?

ROTFL!!!! That's not even half a million dollars and it's all spent on glitz! Like those $1M Victoria's Secret bras with the diamonds. Unlike a bra, which you really do need to encrust with diamonds to get to that kind of price, you can get to a million dollar custom kitchen without trying too hard, and there are plenty of them out there--minus the gold leafing. Custom built Molteni range, walk-in fridge and freezer (yes, we've had ordinary homeowners here have have put walk-ins in their homes), custom tiles designed and made for the project, site made cabinetry out of solid hardwoods, hand burnished, hand forged and burnished pulls, Chihuly chandeliers... Really not hard. :) And with a more functional kitchen in the end, too. :)

Not sure of the exchange rate right now, but I think we got a house, pool and replaced a gutted kitchen for that. And it suits me much better. I'm so glad to say not an ounce of kitchen lust here. Relief! LOL

:) Reminds me of an Architectural Digest apartment once--ceiling covered in jeweler-grade silver--because he just couldn't get the special look he was going for with any other material. Uhuh. I believed it too.

Downright ugly and pointless. Wolf and Sub-zero appliances? Comon I could probably find you a French or Italian range that will easy run up that bill way off the charts. I have to assume some large manors in Europe have far more expensive kitchens.

That kitchen is a total BS marketing self promoted by the shop's PR firm. $468k doesn't even come close to the world's most expensive kitchen.

That project is just like pllog's bra example. 150k worth of substance - 18,000 worth of actual gold leaf and 300,000 worth of hype to make the lucky suck..I mean buyer feel (s)he is in the "club" .

More power to them, there is a market for everything.

I was going to say Disco Kitchen, but have to bow to "Casino" or "Dubai." ;-) Sure not the way I'd choose to spend that money... Or a place I'd want to spend much time. Fun to look, though.

Reminds me of those high designer fashion models wearing their cutting edge wouldwhatchamacallits on a runway. Way too expensive and who the heck would ever wear that anyway?! Too much foof and looks very uncomfortable.

One US dollar = 0.647910 GBP today. Surprise they didn't use the euro.

It would probably look good in a house rather than on an exhibition hall concrete floor.
I like it better than some of the HGTV crapola I regularly see. Not a lot of US consumers connect with the Euro-modular kitchen idea. You take them with when moving so you only buy them once, and they can be very personalized.

the UK joined the eu, eec, in the 70' they only opted out of the euro but are still a part of the community. Euros are acceted in english stores and banks by law I believe.
I have been waiting for a "new" kitchen this just proves that you should be carefull about what you wish for.

Oh come on chaps. It takes money to hand apply 12 coats of glitter embossed in lacquer. Each coat of which probably took a freshly made kitten pelt to buff.
I'm only disappointed there isnt a glass artichoke lamp in there - although chihuly's stuff probably better fits in the space.

Did anyone read the comments of the designer? Something about how, above all, the kitchen is the heart and soul of the home, etc.... this kitchen has less heart and soul than any kitchen ever!
