These were in our old house, so please excuse the 90s decor. I never thought of them as dark, even though we had no direct sunlight into the kitchen. The 2nd photo was taken at night.

Very nice! Your kitchen looks alot like ours-down to the knobs and pendants. Can you tell me where you got your stools?

Some of us come into this with a picture of stained cherry in our heads and think cherry is dark. I certainly did. We were initially thinking maple too. But then we realized that natural cherry isn't that dark, would contrast well with our very light wood floors and would add warmth to balance the blue tones in our counter.

I'm really happy with the natural cherry and don't find them dark.

Our floors were Wilsonart Estate Plus laminate tiles.

Our floors are old - we replaced them when we moved into the house around 23 years ago so I don't remember exactly what they were. Birch or beech engineered wood (similar to plywood except the top layer of wood is around 3/8 thick so they can be refinished a couple of times. Ours have been refinished once after about 20 years (they could have used it earlier but we didn't get around to it).

mrs-mjt, sorry to take so long to respond. Of course, I'm happy to answer your questions! Here goes...

My ceiling is 8'6" and the upper cabinets are 47" tall, including the crown molding. The cabinet doors are 42" tall.

Thanks for the photos. Very helpful! Can you clarify something. When we say "natural" cherry does that mean that a clear topcoat is applied without using any stain. Or is the stain called "Natural" used along with a topcoat? Does the stain called "Natural" have any colorant added? Thanks!

Rhome410, was there any stain on your cherry cabs, or were those just clear coated? That's the shade I'm hoping to achieve--not too light, not too dark....Thanks in advance!

cj47 it was just clear finish...No stain. DH thinks it some kind of crime to stain over the beauty of cherry and I have to say I agree :-) --although I've seen some beautiful cherry that was stained a very dark brown.

My DH and I agree with rhone and her DH. When we looked at a sample with a very light stain and the natural cherry, there is a depth to the natural cherry that the light stain wipes out. If you are looking at new cherry, be aware that natural cherry darkens a bit on exposure to UV. Most of it happens in the first few weeks, then a little more over the next year or two. Our GC loaned us a 2 year old sample door to use when picking the wall color.

I'm afraid I have to beg to differ. We felt that the very light, watered down stain that was used on our cabs (1/4 cut Harvest gold stain) actually brought out the graining more than leaving them natural might have (helped it to "pop"), and it also helped to "control" or "guide" the natural ambering or darkening of the wood:

This picture was taken a full year after the cabs were delivered BTW.

Our cabinets have no stain, just a clear finish.

cat mom, What is your flooring? Is there a stain applied?

Late to the party, but here are my natural cherry cabinets. No stain. My grain shows through nicely. They were installed around Thanksgiving and have darkened nicely. This picture was taken in February. They are bit redder and warmer looking now.
