Counter Templating Tuesday
Comments (11)I asked to have our sink installed as far forward as possible, too. I've seen sinks in kitchens on remodeled home tours that had 6" of counter in front of the sink. I did a test run of leaning over the sink and imagining myself lifting up a big pot full of water. Ugh! Just thinking about it made my back hurt. Additionally, that much counter in front of the sink pushes the faucet so far to the back that if you don't have a generous counter behind the sink (as you do, Carrie), you could end up with what a CMKBD friend of mine calls a "faucet wedgie." That's her term for what happens when you wind up with not enough space behind the sink to turn the faucet handles. I have 1-1/2" counter overhang and 3-3/4" of counter in front of my sink that has 1/8" positive reveal (wanted to be able to rest a cutting board on the sink lip). I thought about going with a deeper overhang to extend over the cab handles but I'm glad I didn't so that I have that little bit extra room for getting things out of my top drawer....See MoreUsing a reveal with an under-mount sink to create a "ledge" sink.
Comments (16)Not advised to create a ledge. You physically can, but now you depend on silicon to keep things water tight. If you keep a zero reveal or an overhang, then water is less likely to accumulate on the sink flange (Which is used to create the ledge). The silicone then can stay intact longer, and not be needed as the primary water guard. Often the biggest problem we see with ledge sinks is with the installation. Some issues we have been told is with accessories not fitting. However, this is easily avoidable with two best practices: 1. The fabricator should always follow the template 2. Once the hole is cut for the sink, dry fit the accessories to ensure smooth sailing from the client. If you like ledge sinks then check this new release: Kraus Kore...See MoreHow to resolve an uneven sink reveal on undermount sink
Comments (6)You are correct to want to have this fixed and I see no other way than them replacing the countertop at their expense and without damage to your cabinets. Suggest they contact the manufacturer of the adhesive to ask what solvent can be used to get the countertop off. Be sure the cabinets are protected from the solvent. If they refuse to/cannot do this - hire another contractor to fix this and let the first contractor know that you will mitigate the damage($$$$) as best as you can, but will hold them responsible to reimburse you the new expenses. This is an option: You may suggest that you are willing to take them to court if you have to. Document the whole process. Or if you think that you can live with it, or if you are thinking of moving, ask for a rebate. This has worked for me in the past. I purchased 8 dining chairs from an online retailer and the chairs were different from the picture on their website. They offered a healthy rebate and I accepted. I would have rather have had the chairs the way they were depicted, but I could live with it and I am also the only one in our family who would notice this. There is always trouble when you have a sharp eye. ;)...See More1/4” corner radius change onsite for sink cut-out?
Comments (1)"I’m being told they can come back out and cut it to 1/4” but they wont’t be able to polish. Is this true, or just an issue with our fabricator?" They can cut and polish on site dust free; I do it all the time. The lighter color estones are particularly easy. That's a zero radius Kohler 3821-1-NA and the reveals are near perfect. Have them reprofile your top edge to a 3/8" radius like I did. It's much less likely to chip than the cheap pencil edge they gave you. And strap, not clip, the sink in place please. I'd drop the sink and freehand the corners with a nasty cup wheel and follow with a 30, 60, 150, and a 4-step quartz pad protocol. That's what I did above. " We have a zero radius sink, which was at the house for template, but for whatever reason our radius was cut at 1” and looks terrible to my detail oriented mind. I’m confused on who made this decision without asking me." They cut it with a CNC machine and that's the smallest radius the tool can do. Again, it saves them money. That's why the decision was made....See Morejhwu
