Honed black galaxi problems

I know this has been asked and answered But I still need some help. After an extensive search for a slate counter top I settled for honed black granite. The owner of the quarry guaranteed me he would seal it before delivery and it would not leave any discolorations. That did not happen, the installers just wiped it down with a sealer and when epoxy was used for the sink glue residue & finger prints set in as well as every splash of water after the faucet was connected.

I called the dealer/quarry the next day and he said he would take care of it. 1 week later everything was leaving stains even when I wiped it immediately, splatter from the stove just spread with each wipe. I called again and told him he needed to send someone over to remove the stains and reseal it properly. His response was well it's stone it's going to do that?????? but he would sell me a sealing kit!!!!I responded what good is that if it's stained. he said use bleach, That didn't work either. I tried using a very fine sand paper some of the lighter discolorations are coming off but so is the sealer creating more of a problem. Help! this guy lied to me and now I'm stuck with a top that is getting worse by the day,is there something wrong with this stone? What can I use to remove the glue stains & food splatter, water marked do come up if I repeated scrub them but that's all day every day???????

Does black galaxy actually require sealing?

Many stones do not.

Was your counter enhanced? It seems to me that many people who have black honed counters also "enhance" them.

I'm trying to remember if honed black counters need to be sealed b/c of the honing... With polished finishes, Black Galaxy, AB, Uba Tuba, and other dark counters usually do not need to be sealed b/c they have a low absorbency rate (<.25>You might do a search for honed black counters and see what you come up with. Try using Google if the GW search (box at bottom of thread list page) doesn't yield many results. Append "site:ths.gardenweb.com" to the Google search.

If all else fails, try emailing Kevin (AZStoneConsulting) or StoneGirl directly. (Maybe VRJames or Paulines?)

Pewter is in the "silver" family. Antiqued is usually a bit darker than non-antiqued pewter. Personally, I think the antique pewter will look fine with the black galaxy - as long as the gold flecks are not overpowering (and they should not be in true black galaxy.) We toyed with that granite as well, but in the end decided the copper flecks would clash with our cherry cabinets. (The black galaxy we saw back in 2008 had a mix of gold & copper flecks. We did not have a problem with the gold, just the copper.) We have pewter pendants, antique iron drawer pulls & door knobs, SS appliances, and satin nickel fixtures - all very similar to your choices and we thought the gold flecks would be fine with our choices. Check the absorption rate...I think you'll find it's too dense to take a sealer (absorption rate From the Stone Advice thread (linked in the "Read Me" thread): BUT: Not all stones need sealer either. Stones like Blue Pearl, Ubatuba, Black Galaxy, Verde Peacock, Verde Butterfly, Platinum Pearl and many others are too dense to absorb any liquids - sealers included. Sealers only protect stone from staining through absorption, so in stones with low absorption coefficients, sealing would be superfluous. Sealing dense stones could lead to nasty results, such as streaking and ghost etching, so DO NOT go by the motto of "seal it anyway, it could not hurt". Rather test your stone for absorption by dripping water on it to see if it darkens any. If the water has no effect on the stone, sealing it is unnecessary. I love Black Galaxy - never had an appropriate use for it, but I love certain granites. Anyway, it is a higher-end granite. Are you in an area with a lot of stone yards nearby? You could probably get a better price unless you are in Podunk and can't get materials easily. I am in So. California and luckily it is very competitive here. I bought two beautiful slabs of seafoam green, which I believe is the same level as Black Galaxy, and paid $2600 for them at a stoneyard in Santa Ana, plus $1600 for fabrication and install for two bathrooms. Three sink cutouts, bath deck and storage cabinet. Prices have definitely come down from when I did my kitchen six years ago - those trades took a beating and now their prices are much more reasonable. Do shop around and also get references. Ask the contractor to break out what the slabs cost, then let us know here.

palomalou, Welllll, I was going to suggest a very well known and respected tile forum but when I tried to post the link, it said they've been having spam issues and I couldn't post the link. Can't imagine what is going on. The two sites have co-existed for the 12 years I've been a part of both of them. The warning said if I try to circumvent the ban, I'd be banned :o Good grief! Sorry :( IF you replace the granite and IF you want to use BG again, ask the granite yard to look for the best granite he can find. The BG I've been seeing for the last several years has been not as black and the bronze and copper flecks are tiny and sparse. 3 years ago when I asked my granite guy to find me the best BG he could get his hands on, he came back with the best BG I think I've EVER seen. Deep black with oodles of large flecks. Gosh it's a beautiful stone!

brickeyee-- that's only for polished stone, and you're right-- POLISHED black galaxy doesn't need to be sealed. But EVERY granite-- even absolute black-- if honed, needs to be sealed.

Sue-- one other quick note-- DO NOT SAND ANY MORE!! If you're not using exactly the same sand paper or grit as was used to get the finish on the stone, you will see those spots no matter how hard you try to blend it in afterward. You are changing the finish of the stone by doing that. What you need to do is get in touch with Stonegirl (she's a wizard when it comes to poultices for different kinds of stains). She'll set you straight.
