threeapples- I was trying to match existing granite in my kitchen, but the only match was 2cm, which was thinner than the existing countertops. When I told my fabricator that I was concerned about the seam in the middle from a built-up edge, he said: "No problem, we'll cut all the pieces at a 45 degree angle and the seams will be along the edges where you can't see them." Take a look at these photos and see what you think: He even showed me samples where he had done this with highly figured marble, and he just matched the cut pieces at the seam line so it looked like the pattern wrapped over the edge and down the sides as if it were a solid 4cm slab. If you can find a fabricator who has the skill to do this properly, it's amazing, and they can give you whatever perceived thickness you want without obvious seams.

Hardwood is being installed tomorrow, yay!!! Hi Lynn, The edge is I believe a regular ogee edge on the island, the fabricators just used numbers for their edge selections, it was #250. The perimeter edge is an eased edge. I read some where maybe on GW that sometimes if you do a fancier edge on the island, most people won't notice it's not done on all the counters in the kitchen. I also like the simpleness of it on the perimeters. Romy, Yes, we have backsplash! I thought long and hard and changed my mind so so many times. Backsplashes are the hardest thing to choose, aren't they? Lol In the end, we just went with simple. My husband the last time at the tile place just pointed to the tile and said he liked it, I was like "Really!?!?!" It was the first tile I considered months and months ago. I looked back at all my inspiration pics on Houzz and then noticed 90% had that same tile in them. White 3x6 beveled subway. I'm going to go in the next couple of days again to see the hardwood and by then the backsplash will be grouted, I'll take more pics. :)

Thanks for your replies. FIRSTHOUSE. I love your kitchen. It is BEAUTIFUL. Your kitchen looks both "homey" , "clean and classic" and ELEGANT just as I imagined mine to be. We are having our cabinets made with glass fronts like yours also. And yes we have the same look in floors. We just had ours oak floors refinished with Miracle Oil, it is suppose to be tougher than poly, ( used in the Grand Ole' Opry dance floor.) Do you like them? We don't have our baseboards back up or furniture in the rooms yet , people think they are not finished. Here's another question FIRSTHOUSE, in the photo your counters look like marble. DH would like granite over marble over concern for marble's reputation. I've never seen white granite, can you tell me more about it ? What is its coloration ? Tell me all about your kitchen. Back from the fabricator run today. I ended up finding one white that totally rocks (no pun intended). It's called super white and it's actually a quartzite which looks like white and gray marble and is stunning without the marble worries. Great stuff. Price? $90 sq ft. UGH. I think there is some room for negotiation so depending on where you go for searching for your granite don't be afraid to ask if they are willing to come down a little. Here's what it looks like: From Kitchen Design In the picture the super white is sitting on a white laminate counter (against a darker cabinet than you have) that is probably 30 yrs. old if not more. We just bought the house 3 mo. ago and the KD dated it to that. He couldn't believe it still looked so white and nice after so long. So there you go. High end (but not highest) white granite/quartzite price. There are medium range priced whites as well but you will have to see how they go against your cabinets. Anything with gold looked absolutely awful with the colors in the fireplace you can see from my kitchen. So make sure you take into effect any colors in your room when looking at the whites.
