I admire your quick thinking and that you still have a sense of humor about it. OMG I am so mad for you! Here a basic DW install runs about $100 and thats a simple disconnect reconnect where they don't touch anything. SO i'm sure you paid well for this idiot to do that! I can't beleive what that guy did - very negilgent! I think they should pay for clean up I would call the manufacterer and see what they say - your warrantee may just be no good now? If you get a new one watch the guy like a hawk while he installs it - like the little children some of these "pros " are they require close supervision. In my experieince with floods if the cabs dry ok they will be ok. Complete drying may take a couple of weeks . Good luck to you!

Call your insurance company immediately! It establishes that there was a "incident" and if this guy's insurance doesn't come through to take care of any damages, your insurance will be there to take care of you and take him to court to recoup the money. If he doesn't do the right thing, he'll have to fight your insurance company and not just you! His response sounds too lackluster to trust. He should have contacted his insurance company immediately and had a rep out there taking pictures before the morning was out.

Damage to your DW will depend on how the water drained away from it. It's designed to hold a certain amount of water in it;s tub after all. If the excess drained away rapidly, then there probably shouldn't be an issue. If you had several inches of standing water in the kitchen before it found an outlet, then I'd want a replacement----of everything. DW, cabinetry, floors, furniture. Flood waters cause plywood to delaminate and this doesn't show until months later sometimes. The cork itself is waterproof, b ut the MDF or HDF that it's mounted on isn't, and trapped water between the flooring and subfloor is a recipe for mold. Remove the floor and let the subfloor dry out. (After your insurance company has taken pictures.) Wherever standing water stood, that needs to either be professionally dried out (by Servicemaster or another damage expert) or replaced.

I've had several water leaks. The best thing to do is flip open the yellow pages and call a water remediation company. Call now and get one that can come out within an hour or two.

They've got a sensor that they'll use to check for moisture everywhere that the water may have gotten to, including the basement ceiling and inside the cabinets. If they find excessive moisture they'll set up fans and a dehumidifier to get it out. They leave the equipment running (you're essentially renting it by the day) and come back after a few days (or their best guess) to re-check moisture levels.

I didn't involve insurance for any of my leaks. I think my deductible is around 5k and the various visits were under $1000 for the most part. Plus I didn't necessarily want a report of "flooding" or water damage to be attached to my house.

Once everything is dried out you'll be fine.

So very sorry this happened - how awful. Water does more damage to homes than any other element or act of nature.

That said - I would hold the installer responsible for everything - it was the negligence of the installer that caused this. Is the installer associated with the Appliance store? Who did repair?

You are correct in thinking about the long term effects which will not show up to the undiscerning eye -

Hopefully you have been able to do a professional dry out since it has been 2 wks since incident - By that I mean - All water sucked up & removed, industrial fans & dehumidifiers to help dry out water that could not be sucked up- Because you are dealing with a number of different materials & Surfaces each will respond differently to water assault and time will only tell how each responds.

Wood can be very forgiving & just needs time, in general I don't know about cork & certainly the underlayment/subfloor will need to be assessed as well as surrounding area - wood trim, cabs, wall board & the likes - some of which can wick water up & in. Has anyone pulled the DW out of it's location? if not, that may be in order & will help assess the area & how the surrounding area likely responded.

"Basement is another story" - tells a story in and of itself of the amount of water that came pouring out of the DW. I'd be less concerned w/the DW itself - electronics etc & more with the collateral damage which as a far greater bill & more difficult to truly assess.

I'd also focus on the install - the pic above difficult to tell but it appears the hose was either crimped and/or burned - I would want to establish clearly this was not due to anything you did (don't be surprised). Also, if the installer is from Appliance store - try to get a sense of installers history - how long he has been doing installs etc.

Good point about the insurance company chiefneil. That is something to consider. Had some trouble finding a water company yesterday but I'm on it again today.

jejvtr, the installer and repair guy both work for the appliance store. They are a high end reputable local company, and I am holding them responsible. The hose (which the repair guy tried to take with him - until I said "Oh hell NO, THAT stays here) does look crimped in more than one place and looks like it may have shorted (?) not sure if that's the right term.

It's not 2 weeks, today is day 6. Sorry I was not clear.

A lesson for all out there as a result of this mess. My contractor said to shut the valve to the dishwasher off when not in use. That goes for the washing machine as well as those hoses are running water hoses. I didn't know that before.

Their insurance should have already contacted you and be the ones paying for water remediation. If that's not happening, you've got a ticking time bomb on your hands. The longer the water sits, the more mold will occur and the more damage will occur. If drying out steps aren't taken immediately, then you are definitely going to have to replace a lot of things rather than saving them. If their insurance isn't stepping up here, then yours needs to go after them! It's far better to have a notation of flood damage on your home's record than to actually have unrepaired flood damage because these guys are reluctant to call in their insurance carrier to take care of you.

Since you mention the washing machine, you might want to take a look at Floodcheck hoses. I replaced my washing machine hoses with them after a leak and was really impressed with the quality. They're a big step up from the standard braided steel hoses (or God forbid, the plain rubber hose that comes with most machines).

Based on personal experience, I would also hesitate to call your insurance company. My insurance company claims department bent over backwards to help me when I had water damage from a faulty refrigerator hose. Then when it was time to renew, underwriting jacked up my rates so high that it would have been less expensive to pay for the damage myself. Then when we moved to a new area that my insurance company didn't cover we had to pay an even higher rate because new insurers didn't like the fact that we had a recent claim.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with this mess.

So sorry to hear of your experience. It's a good thing you were home and realized the problem. I recently had a problem with my washing machine (LG) valve and the machine would fill with water after I completed wash. Good advice to turn off valves. Good luck with your resolution. I know its so aggravating.

First, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. I know you're more focused on the damage to your beautiful kitchen, but be sure to address the water damage in the basement as well, especially since it's prime breeding ground for mold. Is your basement finished? All damage must be included in your conversation with the appliance store. Best of luck, and I'll be keeping positive thoughts for you!

hollysprings, their insurance company did not call me. When I called the appliance store the service manager did say to call him back with a list of the damage. That's as far as I've gotten with them. I called this afternoon and he did not return my call. Not a good sign. I'll call again tomorrow and if he does not call back I will call the owner of the company.

Update: I called my local insurance agent yesterday, as they were closed over the weekend. My local agent (not the national big insurance company) who I have been with for 30+ years told me NOT to file a claim with them yet. She will put the notes in my personal file but not share with the insurance company until I contact her. She said: my claim, my deductable. I would lose the no claim discount. And who knows what underwriting does once they get a claim. For all the negative reasons listed above by some of you, she strongly suggested against filing saying that the appliance store has insurance and that's who I need to file the claim with. She gave me a list of things I needed to do and was very helpful.

Called a water damage company. They are coming tomorrow afternoon with a moisture meter, industrial fans and dehumidifiers. I'll get the bill and forward to appliance store. Called the cork floor install guy and he is trying to fit me into his schedule ASAP. He is more concerned with mold between the subfloor than to cork because it is a glue down. I'll keep you posted.
