Use Enhancer on stone backsplash?

I'm back with another question. I couldn't find an answer when I searched the forum. Should I use the enhancer on my tumbled stone backsplash or just seal it? The tile store recommended the enhancer. It seems that most people on the forum are sealing only. Will the enhancer change the color of the tile that much? What are the benefits? Thanks, my tile guy is coming this afternoon to start the job.

I think it is personal preference. In my laundry room remodel, I used a slate, but did not enhance it, as I liked the color as is. In my kitchen, I will be enhancing. If you mist water on your tile - that will tell you what it will look like enhanced. Good luck

An enhancer will bring out the color and veining, whereas a standard penetrating sealer will leave it looking just as it does now.

I have just put cultured stone from Eldorado on my fireplace as well and it looks amazing! A huge improvement over what was there previously, and a quick and easy update. It might be a fairly rustic look in the kitchen (guess it depends on the stone), but if that fits your plans my only thought would be echoing those above in that it would be hard to keep clean. It's not only the irregular/3D shape but also the porosity. A fairly dark sample and/or one with enough variation in the colour would probably hide most stains. Just not sure about grease spots. Maybe you could spray some olive oil on a sample and see how it holds up? And then there's the issue of food residue in a porous surface and the potential for growth of micro-organisms, but unless you're eating off of it (I hope not!) I'm not too sure that's a worry. I'm not 100% sure but my impression when I was shopping for my fireplace surround is that "cultured stone" is actually concrete? If so, and if we're talking about the same thing (no quartz or resin in my cultured stone), I think it should be OK with the heat from your range. It's around our wood burning fireplace after all, though I haven't had the opportunity to use that fireplace yet. I'm no expert in this stuff, I just know it is heavily marketed to fireplace surrounds. FWIW I have a 3D tile on the wall behind my cooktop - not nearly the same thickness scale as the stone around my fireplace, but 3D nonetheless. I love it! I just installed an unenhanced slate floor in the bathroom and I hate it. I'm ready to smear mineral oil on it just to darken it up. It looks so chalky and old. Not in a good way. When I bought it, I thought that sealing it would produce the same effect as when water was rubbed on it. But the sealer, even though it was "semi-gloss" really did nothing. I guess the best part of your situtation is that you can install it unenhanced and then correct it if you don't like it. Is that any help at all? Joyce

Cleaning and Enhancing sealed honed marble backsplash

We had a honed marble backsplash installed in our new kitchen (5-1/2" square installed on diagonal). There were a lot of problems with the installer; he had to come back and redo some of his work...twice...due to crooked 45 degree angles and chipped tiles. The backsplash looked very pretty with the under cabinet lighting on, however, when the lights were out and daylight came in from the windows, you could see smudges and streaks all over the surface, which I believed was smeared grout. I tried cleaning it to no avail. The installer had sealed the tile immediately after installing...I think he should have made sure it was clean before he did that. We had a stone contractor here to try and clean it up. He spent three hours lightly scraping the backsplash with a razor blade (which produced a lot of powder on the countertops that I assumed was sealant and grout residue). Then he resealed. This improved the appearance, but did not take care of the problem totally. Is there some kind of product that will unseal the sealant so we can clean it again and then reseal/enchance? Also, the color of the tiles are bland (ranging from whiteish to light taupe). Is there a sealer/enchancer that will deepen the colors? The "repair" was done about a year ago and we haven't done anything since. Thank you all.

So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Just my opinion.

Is there an enhancer you recommend Bill? And does the enhancer also seal, or do you seal over the enhancer? And, can you train my puppy to pee outside? And can you potty train a two year old? And...oh well that's enough for now :oP

Wet your backsplash with water, if you like the way it looks wet, then enhance it. If you like the way it looks before you wet it, then don't enhance it. Here are some before and after pictures of my backsplash before enhancing. I prefer it enhanced. The enhancer took away all the grey and white tones and brought out the brown tones of the tile.

Now I have a question to add...and am anxious to hear Bill's responses to igloochic's questions (I say train the 2 yr old to pee outside and potty train the puppy!).

So my question (hope it's not too dumb): Is it better to enhance/seal prior to installation or after installation?

We're using the Miracle Sealants - Enhance & Seal. It seals and enhances.

One of two-- I forget who has which-- one is Miracle's and the other Aquamix-- Enrich and Seal, and Enhance and Seal. Both very good products.

And does the enhancer also seal, or do you seal over the enhancer?

Yes, I can. The question is WILL I!!

And can you potty train a two year old?

janefan-- I've got a funny story about that! I'm originally from Connecticut, and 25 years ago, I had inlaws up here in Maine that we used to come up and visit during the summer. Now, when we'd come up and visit, my brother in law and his family only had running water in the sink, and still used a "privvy" (Outhouse). At the time our kids were all boys, under the age of 3, so being that the closest neighbor was about 2 miles down the road, we told them just to pee off the back porch. Well, we came back down from vacation this one summer-- we'd moved out of our apartment, and were waiting one more week after we got back to close on our first home, during which time, we were staying with my sister and her husband in a very nice "yuppy" neighborhood in Milford. We got up that first morning (a beautiful spring sunday) and my son got up, not giving it a second thought, marched right past us, rubbing his eyes, out to the back porch to go pee!! Obviously, with the situation a little different, my sister just looked at us like we had two heads, and I had to run out there and let him know that we don't do that any more, while my wife sat there and explained things to my sister! Even my sister laughs now when we look back at it, but she wasn't laughing too much that day!! :-)
