Nicole: If the end pieces I pictured above were missing, you'd be looking at an exposed cabinet style and the top and bottom rail on each end and a hole between the three. The drawer end covers the void and makes your eye continue the line from the doors upward. A flush piece in the void would have to fit perfectly, be finished matched, would not continue the line, and would therefore look stupid. You're not going to find any pictures because no one would ever go through that much work for something that's not going to look good. Here's a full size 33" apron sink properly mounted in a 36" cabinet. The distance from the cabinet end to the sink apron end will be 3" on your job, not the 1 1/2" pictured here which I admit doesn't look too bad. That sink was replaced by this short apron Elkay Quartz Luxe. The bottom of the apron now lines up with the adjacent drawer bottom, and there is virtually no cabinet face exposed which I think looks better. I made the customer find a factory painted color match trim (you provide, you agree color matches) which I installed above and flush with the top of the middle rail to fill the gap. That didn't have to fit nearly as nicely as flush side fillers would have to, because only the person reaching under the sink will ever see it.

I have a hard time picturing a 30" farm sink in a 36" cabinet -- unless there's a reason a 36" sink wouldn't work, I think I'd just eat the cost of the error, which sounds like you agreed to but later regretted, and replace the 30" sink with a 36". That way you get the benefits of the larger sink and don't have to worry about the fillers looking o.k. -- frankly, IMO, part of the appeal of a farmhouse sink is the clean look and simplicity -- piecing in the extra fillers seems like it would not only create unusable deadspace around the sink (where you might as well have functional space), but would detract from the clean-lined farmhouses sink look.

MaWizz: Thank you for the arabesque suggestion. You are definitely not too late since I am still very much ABB. I started this thread right before Christmas, and then with the holidays and travel and a zillion things since, I have not given much thought to my backsplash. By reviving this thread you forced me to start really thinking about it again. I agree with most that responded that the Heath dual glaze is all wrong and I have abandoned that idea for good. I also am sure I do not want a white or marble subway. I still think something in a pretty light gray would be good, but am open to other colors. I spent a long time on the Pratt and Larson website today and plan to visit a showroom that sells their tiles next week. I love my new kitchen but it feels incomplete without a bs.

Scrap wood is certainly fine and it what I use in my garden. First make sure the box is located where it will get at least 6-8hrs of direct (no shade) sunlight, not daylight but direct sun. If you stand between it and the sun you will see your shadow. It looks like there may be some things nearby that will block the sun. < I should get a tomato cage for the tomato plant, right? Do the peppers need anything?> You can try the cages on the pepper plants, often the soil is too soft to support tomatoes in cages but can work for peppers which won't get as big or heavy. But for tomatoes I like Upright supports screwed to the side of the bed. This is so the tall plants don't block the sun. Spacing can be taken from the seed packet - use the seed spacing after thinning since you won't be thinning. Draw it out on paper to see if you will have room for what you have planned. Keep a Garden Notebook. Each spring review what went well last year and what needs improvement. Winter is a good time to plan the next garden layout, plants, etc. Start small and try to avoid overcrowding. If you want more plants next year make another box. Cherry tomato plants tend to grow very tall (vines) and will provide lots of tomatoes. I am so glad you are teaching your son to garden. Kids are like sponges and learn so quickly then will ask you questions you never ever thought of to make you think AND learn. HTH and good luck. Any other questions?
