Cork drawer liner?

I've read here that cork drawer liner is very nice, so I started looking. So far what I've found is at least $.79/sq.in.!!! Is it really that expensive? I wasn't thinking of spending thousands on lining my new drawers, though I hate to be parsimonious and leave some out.

Am I looking in the wrong place? I mean, I know they have to shave trees and process it and all that, but it seems that the bigger rolls are more expensive than the smaller ones (makes sense since it's a natural product).

Advice?

I don't know where you found that product; I've lined my husbands Craftsmen tool chests with all cork liners that I got at Menard's (which is similar to Home Depot). It was about three years ago and I paid a few dollars a roll, similar to a roll of shelf liner but by all means not .79 per square inch!

Thanks, Neesie! Home Depot (online) does have some cork underlayment for $0.41/sq.in. That's something like 40% less than the drawer rolls (which in turn are less than anything else I've seen).

helou, Yes you are correct. I needed to first rip the boards from their original 4 inch width, down to about 3 inches to fit in the drawers. (or about 1 3/4 inched for the front section of the silverware drawer. Also once I had the boards the correct width, I needed to carefully cut the boards to length. Then to get the boards to the correct length a powered miter saw is the best option, but again depending on what tools you have available, maybe a hand-held circular saw and a speed square, or a miter box and a hand-held pull-saw. If you have a table saw, ripping the boards is trivially easy. If not there are probably a number of other ways to make the boards the correct width. (The easiest might be to find a friend with a table saw, and ply that friend with a bottle of wine, to cut them to width.) But you should also be able to do it with a straight-edge and a hand-held circular saw, or maybe even a straight-edge and a utility knife.

I LOVE my Cushy Cupboard liners. A bit more expensive but worth it and installation is easy. Installation tip that worked well for me...line the drawers with 8 1/2 x 11 colored paper making sure the edges are flush against all four sides of the drawer. Then tape together where the paper overlaps to use as a template. Tape the template to the liner and cut with a blade using a long metal straight edge as a guide. Be sure not to cut at an angle or you'll have a beveled edge. The colored paper helps to differentiate between the white liner and paper when cutting. I did this process separately for each drawer (even within the same drawer bank) because I found there are ever so slight variances between the drawers. Perfect fit every time.

Cork or Rubber Bumpers for Drawers/Doors

A lot of manufactured cabinets have bumpers permanently attached by drilling holes and inserting special bumpers that fit the holes. These bumpers may be thicker than what you want, but you can check big box stores to see if they can order them for you if you drill holes in your doors and drawers. I needed thinner bumpers and opted for the felt bumpers. I actually used a couple different ones found at big box stores and they are still attached where I put them. It has only been a year since I put them on.

I learned the answer a while back at Ikeafans.com: two methods: either let it sit in warm water for a while, or (much easier) warm it with a hair dryer.

plllog, You've got to be either kidding, misreading, miswriting, or messing up the mathematics! This is a link to cork liners at Williams-Sonoma. $20.00 for a 12FOOT x 1.5FOOT (18inch) mat. I'm not sure why you're wanting to compute the cost in square inches but that is $79e-3 (or $0.0079) per square inch.

Your $0.79/square inch would be mean that a similar sized roll would run to more than $1990.00. You couldn't POSSIBLY be finding prices like that - because of the similarity of the numbers, I'm guessing that somehow, somewhere you've neglected to divide by a factor of 100!

Regardless where the messup - WS will give you a 12 foot roll of corkliner, 18" wide, for $20.00 You could buy 100 rolls of that for the cost of 1 roll that you're computing ;-)

Thank-you, thank-you Mindstorm!!! I wasn't feeling well today and used a calculator, being lazy. It was supposed to do cents! Some button got pushed so it moved the decimal two places and I didn't think to look for that! (More proof of why I never mastered a slide rule. I know where the decimal goes if I compute it myself, but I can't keep it in my head. Blame the fifth grade teacher's strike--I didn't learn decimals until I was 15.) Less than a cent per square inch is much more reasonable!!

I'm sure glad you're around to catch me when I screw up! I'm good at arithmetic, but dense sometimes--like today. :)

I bought cork drawer lining recently at Target...It was where the shelf paper is. I think it was something like $7/roll.
