Poll: Japanese Maples for a beginner
Comments (21)Excellent! That is very encouraging news about the japonicums and shirasawanums being good in the cold. I will reveal my ignorance though and ask you what "FWIW" means, haha. I am not exactly learned in internet lingo as you might have guessed. All of your guys' information has been extremely helpful though, and I am starting to feel much more optimistic about my chances of success. I ended up getting 10 Japanese Maples this year which is about 9 more than I expected I would, haha. But what can I say? The more I learned about them and the more I saw pictures, the more I felt like I needed to have this tree or that. I think I'll be getting more next year for sure and I already have my eye on some of the ones mentioned here. But since I am such a greenhorn I'm going to see how I can do with the ten I have before repeating any of my rookie mistakes. My deepest thanks to you all though for your help!...See MoreSmall chandelier as main light source in teen's bedroom?
Comments (10)As a main light source, this will cause a lot of glare and shadows. Whereas an unshaded light is brighter, the diffusion shades provide even out the light. Bare bulbs don't give off the most comforting light. The reason chandeliers work in dining settings is that they are closer to the floor, there are more bulbs for infill, and there are often light sources coming from other sources. I agree that the above would work best as an accent light. A certain amount can be learned from looking at the lighting in commercial spaces such as fine restaurants: There will often be decorative fixtures like this but they are not really the source of most of the light (which often comes from unobtrusive ceiling lighting). This is sometimes called "motivational" lighting (I think)--in that it looks like it is the primary light sourcem, but its not....See MoreA question about lamps for those of you who read in bed . . . .
Comments (11)No pictures because I haven't found the lamps I really want at a price I can live with yet... But I do know what my requirements are. Most lamps are really designed for decoration, not reading. The fabric type shades block a lot of light with darker fabric being worse than lighter fabrics. At a minimum you need 100 watt bulb, but 150 is better. My night stand is too small for a desk lamp so I need a floor lamp; I need the space for my book of the moment. The lamp needs to be adjustable height so I get just the right lighting. A pivot arm is good for the same purpose. If your bedroom is modern/transitional you should have no problem as there are lots of options. My bedroom is traditional and I have a modern/functional lamp for reading: it's almost 'Gumby' in number of ways I can adjust it. It's not a bad looking lamp, it just belongs in another space. But as I'm more concerned with reading than taking tours through my bedroom, it works for now. I included a link to a similar lamp to mine, but mine is much more powerful in light output. The adjustable design is perfect for reading lamps though with the light going onto your book, not the ceiling. Here is a link that might be useful: Adjustable lamp...See MoreRead this - you WILL laugh!
Comments (11)That was wonderful....Isn't it a shame we don't have TV shows like that any more??? The younger people are really missing out on a lot.... Although, I've seen Carol Burnet and Tim Conway over and over, have some of the tapes, I still laugh out loud at their antics...... Good old TV, nothing better..........See MoreBumblebeez SC Zone 7
