Our peninsula is 84" inches long, same as your island, and we're going with two pendants 7-1/2" in diameter (11" from curly on stem to base). This is on the advice of the designer at the lighting store who figured out how much light the pendant would cast so we'd have good coverage for the zillion projects that get carried out on that peninsula besides actual cooking. These pendants are classified as mini-pendants, so maybe you don't need as much as you think you do?

Thanks suzannes1...I am thinking I would like to have a little more space in between the pendants, but I always like to decorate "in threes". Three seems too much for the space. I have been looking online for lighting ideas. We are in the trim-out stage, and I know that lighting will need to go in in the next month. I really like the school-house style lights. Your pendants are really pendants. Are they polished nickel? Satin nickel? Thanks for sharing your picture :o)

They're brushed nickel - I had to look that up! Good grief.

Our island is a bit smaller than yours - 65" X 30". We always knew we would probably have two pendants. But we wanted plenty of light, so we went with the large Restoration Hardware Clemson lights. The bottoms are 14" across. We also really wanted lights that had transparent shades, as this brightens the whole kitchen, as opposed to lights that only shine downward.

I'd also consider a single fixture that has several lights on it branched out. If you get stuck looking, try pool table lights.
It saves on installation as well.....
There are also light fixtures that have one base and several pendants hanging from it.

We have an island that is 36x84 and are either putting two of the Pottery Barn Hundi lanterns or two of the Barnard pendants. My lighting guys said either of their sizes will work.

Two or three or even one pendant can work but the size
of the pendant and the visual space is what is important.
Does it balance? Do you like it? Is the light for
function or more for beauty?

Thanks Boxerpups! I made the mistake early on (when I really didn't know what I wanted) of having the architect place 3 pendants, close together and centered on the island...now, I am worried they will be too close. I can do away with the middle light (cover the electrical hole up with sheet rock) and just have two lights...that is where I am leaning...I wish I had had those lights spread out on the island for visual balance :o)....hindsight...

Boxer - those pix are a great help as always.
I could subtract one fixture from a couple of them, esp the first one. On the chandelier one, I'd prefer them to be smaller.
In a few of the pix, one could perform surgery with the lighting shown, lol....

It is going to be just fine. Keep in mind that once your
kitchen comes together you won't notice. The light coming
from the fixtures will balance everything. You will see.
You might love the three rather than two. Wait and see.
Sometimes choices have to be made at the moment not later
when we really can address the specifics.

Thanks Boxer...how did you know I needed some encouragement ? :o) I am going to have dh re-wire the wires and "cancel out" the middle one and I can most likely find a smaller schoolhouse pendant to work!
