Undermount sink for 24' Base Cabinet

My wife and I are on the tail end of a modest kitchen renovation. We refaced all the old cabinets and added some new along another wall. Since we're almost done we've been arranging for a granite installer and selecting the granite.

Since the granite installer needs the sink on hand to template this is the first time we've looked seriously at sinks and haven't been able to find much. Our current sink over laminate is 22" by 18" and there's no way to get anything that size in an undermount. However we still want about as close to that as we can find. What's the largest stainless sink we can fit? There's a number of sinks that would physically fit (say 22-23" wide), but lack the space for the attachment clips off to the sides, has anyone ever figured out a way around this? I read something about cutting off parts of the cabinet tops so the clips can fit, but I have my doubts about this.

you can cut out the cabinet and the adjoining cabinets to fit clips or if it fits right you can build a wood cradle to hold the sink up and they can clip along the back and front. A cradle is just strips of wood screwed to the cabinet, that sits just under the lip of the sink, and is about a razor blade thickness below the top of the cabinet. They slide the granite over it so make sure you get the cutout done no reveal of it will show scratches. Get your sink first so you can position in the cabinet before the granite templaters come.

Ticor has an undermount that requires a 24" base. Check Galaxy tool supply on Ebay.

Did you take a look at JULIEN yet? I have an incredibly small 24 inch sink base cab ... and we cut away some of the interior to cram a 21" zero radius Julien sink into it. (our sink is the Julien - 3607 - 'UrbanEdgeÃ¯Â¿Â½' 21" x 16") Maybe they have one bigger that you can fit into your 30" sink base. Take a look at this link: http://www.sinksexpress.com/JULIEN-UrbanEdge-Single-Bowl-Sinks/ They have a 24" which you could probably fit into the 30" base... or a 27" that you could fit if you shave away some of the interior of the cabinet. Good luck! It's a pricey sink but it's realllly nice.

Indeed, your cabinet person is correct. Cutting the cabinet is a common process. I was a kitchen designer for 20 years and did that regularly. Often a 24" sink will fit without cutting the cabinet. The flanges will sit on the top of the cabinet sides and will act as support. The sides will have to be routed down the thickness of the sink material so the top of the sink is flush with the top of the cabinet. I have a diagram on my site that illustrates how to do this. The Vision has what's called a chamfored edge--it's beveled. My other choice was a D sink, which I didn't care for. I went from a 36" sink cabinet to a 27". I gained a trash cabinet, which thrilled me! Previous sink was a Kohler double sink of about the same length IIRC. The Vision has plenty of room for washing dishes. I put my dishes into the DW instead of letting them sit in the sink, but If you have a family that's not willing to put their dishes away, it might get annoying to not have free sink space for rinsing something, for instance. It looks tiny in this photo but it's not really. It's 23 x 17. My other choice for a rectangular sink was the Kohler Riverby. There might be some apron-front sinks that will fit.

I disagree with Joseph. A 30" cabinet is not 30" inside. A so-called 30" sink indeed need close to 30" to mount. It may not fit. Fortunately, Melody has a 27" sink, not a 30" one. It should fit no problem in her cabinet. If by "dishwasher outlet" you're talking about the receptacle for the dishwasher, as long as the plug will fit into it and you can reach it, it should be OK. If the plug itself is the disconnect, it's required to be visible to the guy working on the dishwasher, but a unplugged-plug is going to be pretty easy to see even if the receptacle itself isn't. The other thing to consider (since this was in the plumbing in addition to the electrical forum) is to make sure whatever disposal/tailpiece you're using will meet up with the drain line from the dishwasher.

Yes, the ticor s505 should work. You don't need the clips or the rim to fit inside the cabinet (unless you have no adjoining cabinets), just the sink interior.

Ordered the s505 from Galaxy last night, and got an email this morning saying it shipped. Price was better than I was thinking as well, thought I'd have to spend at least $300.

So I think I'll try the cradle option. I'm now trying to figure out a plan that will result in us having the sink out of commission for the shortest period possible.

Is it a must that new sink be installed when the templater comes? Granite guys seemed to think that they could measure the sink position from where the old sink is located, the accuracy of the fit I'll need makes me wonder about this though. Anyone ever use one of the ready-made sink cradle kits, like this: http://www.hechinger.com/hardware/tools/61477-kohler-25-undermount-sink-kit-k-5806.html

Usually they just need to see your sink to template for it, and in our area, if you are getting granite and an undermount, the granite installers do the install. As a matter of fact it's not uncommon for them to take the sink away with them at templating.
