I believe there are a number of manufacturers that make ventilation inserts to be installed in custom (wood, plaster, tile, metal) hoods. I think Modernaire and Vent-a-hood are two brands that folks around here have praised. You might try posting on the appliance forum. I've seen some pretty thorough discussions of ventilation hoods over there. I recall that the higher the hood is mounted above the cooktop, the more powerful the hood needs to be relative to the btu output of your range. Good luck. I love 20s kitchens!

Are you doing it yourself or using a contractor? They may have ideas. Don't be bullied out of getting what you want though. It IS possible to get exactly what you're looking for!

I would echo the nutherokie's advice to look into custom. I'd take your photo down to a local appliance shop with a reputation for good customer service and pick their brain for what can be done.

I would agree that, because the distance between the cooking surface and fan is quite far, efficiency will suffer a bit, even with a very powerful vent, but for something that gorgeous, that's a sacrifice I'd be willing to make. You must have lived with an even less efficient one for awhile.

I'm curious -- have you decided on a tile yet?

I purchased a Vent-a-hood (VAH) liner and had my cabinet guys build a custom hood around it. You could build the hood any shape you wanted, as long as it fit around the liner.

fyi, the pictures below do not show the front piece of wood installed. I know this isn't the type of hood you want, but thought it might be of some help. Good luck!

Are you keeping the range? I've never been completely happy with the look and size of my hood, so your photo gives me some great inspiration.

They make vents specifically to be built in to custom hoods. I'd definitely check over on the Appliances forum for detailed reviews of the leading brands.

Also, you'll want to consult with a good tiler about the best substrate for that subway liner. The John Bridge Tile Forum is an excellent resource, linked below, where the experts will leap to help you resolve any structural issues.

You've gotten the info you need, but I just wanted to say I love what you're doing and look forward to seeing more. BTW, we also bought a liner/motor unit that would work, in our case special order from Home Depot, and built a custom frame around it.
