Honed Granite - do some colors look better than others?

My DH and I were in a showroom today that had a honed black granite countertop, it was gorgeous! DH even liked it. One of the showroom employees said that it is beautiful, but anything oily leaves marks you have to polish out, she also said that only certain colors looked good honed. Has anyone experienced the problems with oily marks on honed granite? Is this a simple clean up or something that drives the TKO crazy? Also, what colors do you have that have been honed and you love? I'd love to see pictures!

IMHO - Yes.... some colors look better than others, but then, that's just
my own opinion as a Fabricator.

Desert Amarillo and Juparana Bordeaux look totally awesome honed, with
some stone enhancer on either will have a warm glow to the colors, and they'll
kind of "jump out" or "pop" ......

as far as Absolute Black - honed - I'd get a sample piece of the honed AB, and
hit it with some Method Daily Granite Polish for a couple of days to a week -
you have to build up a patina with the Method (the coconut oil has to build
up in order to get the color to fully "pop")

Lots of folks are using Method on AB - I would think that it'll work on ANY Granite
that is honed or textured with a leather or antiqued finish......

Botom line as far as I am concerned - MANY Granites will look good honed.

I have Jet Mist honed. It's very beautiful, but even more so since I had an enhancer applied. Now it's darker, the white veins pop more, and it looks silkier. Best of all, oil does not stain it now, whereas oil did stain it when it only had a sealer on it. My advice is to apply an enhancer to any honed stone you buy, but try it first on a test piece to be sure you like the darkening.

I set out 15 blueberry plants about 5-6 years ago in the same bed. The bed is in full fun, from north to south, two rows of 7 and 8 plants. The bed has a gentle slop from south to north. The spacing is 4.5' between plants and 5' between rows. When I planted them, I mixed with 50% peat moss and 50% existing soil. I did not put on any sulfur. I have not tested the PH for a long time. I mulched the bed with about 1"-2" of composted wood chips. The 5 plants in the south size (the high ground) did really well and they are about 5' tall, putting out good berries for at least 3 years. But two plants died, one Rubel and one Elliot. At first, I thought drainage is to blame since the plants in high ground did extremely well. But the Northland and Brigitta are in the middle of the rows. The Polaris is the 2nd plant from the south and it has not grown much at all. The bed is not water clogged. So I decided to replant the slow growing ones to another location. When I replanted them today, I mixed with 50/50 peat moss/soil and add 1-2 cups of sulfur and a cup of bone meal in each hole. I hope this will somehow make the PH lower and make the plants happier.

I've been on several soapstone blogs over the last couple of years and as someone who has a soapstone counter with a soapstone sink in a bathroom for 25 years, I think I am qualified to talk to you about soapstone. My soapstone came from a well known company in Vermont--I'm sure you have come upon the name if you've been researching soapstone. It was a light grey when new and because I liked the black color, I oiled it and oiled it and oiled it. It is the bane of my existence. Thank goodness it is in a powder room or I think I would rip it out. Hand soap, soap from shaving or any organic product will lift the oil from the stone in places causing the light color to show through. It then looks awful. The company suggests one keep an oiled rag under the counter for touch-ups. That should tell you something. Now do you want to oil a dirty sink? If you don't, then you will have to clean it, say with an oiled soap, and then that will remove even more of the oil. Now you will have to do a major oiling job. Whoever decided that soapstone doesn't need oiled but every 6 to 8 months must not be using the counter. If you can find a color of soapstone you like without oiling it then maybe it would work but I believe it will now show oil spots. I don't think you can win with soapstone. I'd find another alternative. I know that the word laminate is not a popular one on this forum but I know someone with a high end house with beautiful cherry cabinets and yes, laminate counters. Her three young children eat on it, do crafts on it, spill everything imaginable on it and after 5 years still looks like new. I don't know why laminate gets no respect when it now comes in so many wonderful colors and textures. Just my opinion.

There are so many counter materials out there. I would recommend doing some searches on this site (use the search box at the bottom of the forum) and in general on the Internet. As billl mentioned, there are numerous varieties of granite and several finishes (polished, honed, flamed, etc). So saying "granite is common" is like saying "wood cabinets are common". Yes, they certainly are, but that doesn't mean that every application looks the same as the others. It's certainly ok to choose another material, but I wouldn't discount an entire material just because many people are aware of it or use it. Some other options might be the following. quartzite quartz (Silestone, Caesarstone, etc) glass composite (IceStone, etc) paper composite (Paperstone, etc) metal and resin (Alkemi, etc) stainless steel copper zinc solid surface (Corian, etc) soapstone slate marble wood

Yes it makes a difference. Get samples. Lots of samples. From the actual slab you're considering. I ended up with one that etched moderately but was really stain resistant. It was honed, busy, and grey. Didn't much show. All the marbles I tested, from the priciest whites to the grubbiest grey, impressed me with their ability to clean up after the torture test. Etching, yeah, but stains? Nope. Also test them for ding resistance, or not looking bad after getting dinged. (I used one called "Bardiglio" which it may or may not have been. It happened to be really cheap, but I got it because I liked it and I couldn't stain it.) I think the staining of marble has been somewhat exaggerated (although I'm sure some are bad), but it's so easy to test for yourself.

I love, love honed Ocean Green Granite used in many wonderful kitchens posted here. I have also seen honed Coste Esmerelda which is outstanding.

Kevin - I will definately try to check out both Desert Amarillo and Juparana Bordeaux. I'm not sure which black granite was on display; it was on a large island and it had an inlay in the center of another granite. It was very striking, but I am afraid I'd grow tired of the inlay. I will definately consider your suggestion about the Method product.

jeanteach - I know I posted a question on your other post, so forgive if I'm repetitive here. I did find in another of your posts which stated which enhancer you used.

gwendelen - from photos I've always liked Ocean Green and Coste Esmerelda, I will see if I can find them to see in person.

I am still a little confused between enhancers and sealers; isn't there a difference? Also, will either a sealer or an enhancer wear off and have to be reapplied after time? And, sinced honed isn't as shiny as polished granite, does the enhancer or sealer put a shine back on the granite. I really liked the non-shiny surface. I also need to go to an actual granite yard. The showroom I was in yesterday carried everything from windows to kitchen cabinets and we were actually there to look at windows for our house build.
