need countertop help asap

I searched the archives but didn't find much on Hanstone quartz counters. I ordered Chroma on Saturday and my stone yard emailed me today to ask if I would consider the Hanstone instead because they have one slab of it instock and would only need to order one more, whereas in the Chroma they would have to order two. I'm only over one slab by a tiny bit, so the rest would become a remnant for them. They are a small family run business, so I understand their reasons. They say they are totally fine with my decision either way and in no way are they pressuring me. The colors are virtually identical in the two lines (Chroma's Clay Pebble vs Hanstone's Tiffany Grey.) My concern is that if the slabs come from different lots, they might be slightly off in color. Is that a valid concern? Also, I don't know anything about Hanstone aside from the few comments I read here and would like some opinions on it from anyone who knows. Templating is Wednesday with install next Tuesday, so I need to decide pretty quickly. Thanks!

Oh--and I checked warranties. Chroma is 15 years and Hanstone 10, but when I read the "fine print" I'd be surprised if anything is actually covered given all the exceptions!

You're right about the fine print! I've never heard of Chroma, but we got quotes on Hanstone. My fabricator thought is was as good a product as any of the others he sold. I thought I remembered the warranty being 15 years (I can't look it up because I've messed up my e-mail and can't read anything from before today) but it must have been another one. Regardless, I have heard stories on this forum about various companies finding some excuse not to honor their warranties, no matter what it seems to say up front.

Where will the small bit from the 2nd slab go? If it will be adjacent to the other, I'd rather make sure and have them from the same lot. You never know with the engineered stone because of the way it is manufactured. If it's not going to be touching, it may not be as obvious. If it were me, I'd let them know I'd be willing to try it but if the two slabs didn't match up satisfactorily, I'd be wanting to order two of the other. (But sounds like you don't have time for that... in which case I'd insist on having two from the same lot.)

It sounds like they charge by the sf? We had to pay for slabs, but I know different fabricators work differently.

Yes, they charge by the square foot. You had very good questions, which I've passed along to my fabricator (like what part of the counters will come out of the smaller piece). I'm having the windowsills made of the counter top material (one window sill is 102" x 9", so pretty big) and maybe that's what needs to come out of the second piece. I should be hearing back from them shortly, when they open up today, I hope. Thanks for the help.

Please post a picture when you're done. All the best at this stressful time. I like what you have done so far. I don't see why painting quartz is any different than painting tile. Shiny things can be painted, sometimes even without roughing them up. The very worst that could happen is that in a few years you need to replace it. Or repaint it. Doesn't seem like such a high risk to me. In the meantime, you have something that you like the look of.

it's not horrible. but I agree, the rough edge should have been done better to blend w/the other piece. I also think they could have done a better job matching up the pieces. 100% they should have informed you where they were going to cut and how the ends would look against one another. Most reputable fabricators will show the client and have them sign off before they cut, just for this reason. you have a lot going in there from what I can see. a very busy backsplash, red/brown cabinets and a blue/gray wall color? and bright white outlets. you can buy colored outlets/plates that would blend in w/the tile. or get the wood one and paint it yourself to match the tile color. when shown against everything else you have happening in that space, the seaming really isn't that noticeable.

Problem solved. They couldn't get another slab from the same dye lot so they opted not to change to the other brand and they are good to go with my original choice!
