beadboard....too busy???

Hi all,

I just picked up my vanities (I know its the kitchen forum, but my question is a cabinetry one), and I really really like them. The are build very strong with 3/4" plywood all around, as well as dividers.
I went to Mennonite's to have the work done after seeing a kitchen they did...which was gorgeous and well under priced. I gave the main guy a picture of a vanity that I wanted to have in the master, and we went over the changes I wanted and where I wanted the beadboard. This is a picture of the vanity I gave him.

The only changes we ended up making how to divide up the drawers etc, as I needed a 54" and the vanity pictured is larger. I wanted everything else the same as in beadboard on only 3 things and the rest to be slabs. He ended up making all the drawers with beadboard fronts. I think it looks very busy now and has a different look, more rustic. Does anyone agree? DH thinks its not a big deal and that we got upgraded stuff at no cost. Im willing to compromise, but does beadboard cabinetry have more of a rustic cottage type feel? Do you get that sense from the vanities? Should I have them replace the drawer fronts?

I don't know that I get a rustic cottage type feel, but I do think it looks busy on the drawers--all the drawers. I think slab fronts would be better. If it were me, I'd be willing to pay the extra to have them changed.

Wonderfully built. I see 10 matching drawer heads and yes, you stole them @ n/c....
I think they look fine to me, but I also know how much work went into those 'mini doors'...be a shame to waste'em....

I love beadboard, but decided that all beadboard would be too much, so I used it for accent pieces (wood hood, huge drawers below cooktop, back 7 end of pennisula and finish end of upper cabinet). I just remembered something you might be interested in, regarding beadboard on the soffits. Not long ago I saw some postings (not sure which site) about bead board wallpaper. Now, trust me, I am not a fan of wallpaper, I've removed more of it over the years than I care to remember. But this looked good, its a thick wallpaper, not sure if its vinyl or paper, but it is grooved just like the real wood and can be painted. That might be a good option for you, since there was a concern that the real wood beadboard would protrude out over the cabinets. I saw some photos of it installed in bathrooms and kitchens, it looked great. I found some for sale in HD not long ago, when I was considering doing a bead board ceiling in my kitchen. I thought the beadboard paper would be a lot easier and less costly, although in the end we left the ceiling as is. (for now, anyway, I still haven't ruled it out) It was not expensive and might work for you. Since you are painting, not staining, I think it would blend well and look good. Might be worth taking a look at if you get to one of the big box stores.

Good for you, Vjrnts. Full coverage instead of those? What was he thinking? I needed you around when I was caving to the better judgment and experience of my contractor. He is truly an excellent contractor and we were fortunate to have him, but in those placed I bowed to his opinion I regret it. Janice, stainless is so common a fusion with traditional and rustic styles now that I don't personally see it as too sleek but rather adding a bit of an update edge to it. But then we're talking about an impression that's very personal, so how you feel about it when it's all in is all that counts. How about investing $40 or so in some kitchen-porn books, tearing out all the pages of kitchens you like regarding of whether they help with your current one, and then laying the pages out and figuring out what they have in common? I really think that may help you with your kitchen because it needs you to cast a thoughtful eye at it with a willingness make a few reasonable changes to create a final look you really like. It sounds like you basically like your kitchen now, which is a terrific start, but with all that's going on finish, texture, and color-wise, I think you need to change something to pull your kitchen's elements all back together into one cohesive look, whatever it turns out to be, because what your kitchen as-is obviously NEEDS is coppertone appliances, or whatever that brown finish we all loved so much 30 years ago was called. I've heard there's another brown line out there somewhere these days, but being new and different it's probably outrageously expensive.

Your ideas are possibilities, Funkycamper. We talked about doing glass over the beadboard, too, but I do wonder if it would look funny.(?) I also wonder how successfully we could blend "real" beadboard with ceramic beadboard. That's part of why I was considering transitioning to a totally different medium behind the range, so that it wouldn't be real and fake right next to each other. Thanks for your vote of confidence! I revel in all of the possibilities, LOL, it's making a "final" decision that's tough! Thanks for sharing the tile you got, iroll. Since you did the beadboard only behind the range, I'm curious what you did elsewhere. I don't think crackle snaps or pops for DH, unfortunately. I found some gorgeous (or so *I* thought) crackle tile by Enser. DH response was "Oh, yuck! What's wrong with that tile?" So much for that, LOL. Your question of how much the eye "needs" is a good one, Rococogurl. I don't know. I love color, and I like neutrals, too. I'm not sure how much my eye, or the eyes of my family can handle. I also know that I love to change things around, so committing to a color feels a bit constrictive. I get you on the difficult appliance choice. So glad to hear that your final decision is made! You must be relieved. I was talking to a friend whose son works in China. He said, "Mom, life is so much simpler over here!" She visited him and saw that they don't have much kitchen to speak of, they wash their dishes in the bathroom. She questioned his idea of "simplicity", but he then explained how if they need a fridge there are only 2 choices at the store. A big fridge or a little fridge. That's it. There is no agonizing over which thing to choose. I don't care for the medallion/mural in the picture I shared, either. I didn't associate it with a certain era, necessarily (says the girl who just put her 1997 Chevy van to its final rest...) but I think I'd tire of the same picture back there, day in and day out. My daughter and I were talking about how we can't wait to turn the calender to see the new picture each month because we're tired of the old one. So, no stone murals for this household! : ) I don't mean to be a tease! ; ) Let's put it this way, right now I feel like I'll be as surprised how this kitchen looks as you will be, if that's any consolation. I plan to post pictures, no worries! Thanks for sharing the picture of your beadboard tile combo, diymom79. Both my mom and my MIL have the vinyl beadboard in their bathrooms and love it, too. MIL has hers with the wide plank look. It's very pretty. I feel like I'm at a beautiful beach cottage when I'm in there. : ) I picked up some fabric samples today from a local store. They are quilt fabrics, so I don't know if they'd be a good choice for curtains, but they do give me an idea of how the colors work with the cupboards. Fun! I like them both--Oops. One is light colored background with blue flowers, and the other one is a black background with pink and cream flowers with green leaves. Maybe I could make both summer and winter curtains?? I need to go to the city to find decorator fabric, but the weather isn't being very cooperative for that endeavor. So, if I must, I'll stare at the cotton samples for a few days. This is one of the problems you will get when working with Amish cabinetmakers. Little attention to detail and communication issues.

The profile on your doors/drawers are also different than you inspiration photo (or so it looks)....it has a routed detail, whereas the other photo has squared edges (no profile). The beadboard is simplified and wider than yours. Also, the drawer heights are different.....the cabinet guy on Houzz. did slim drawers and then much deeper ones on the bottom, to set them apart, so when done differently, it would look on purpose.
Your cabinets are framed, it appears....the other photo is frameless which gives you much tighter spaces in between doors/drawers.

I'm afraid if you really want that look, the whole thing needs to be remade.

But if you like this cabinet OK....then go ahead and use it. I think it looks fine....just NOT what you wanted which was a more modern, transitional shaker look. You didn't get that.

I think it depends on what the rest of the bathroom and the rest of the house looks like.

I think your vanity is handsome for what it is, but I don't think it resembles the inspiration vanity more than slightly, because the details that make the Hawaii vanity what it is, are all the details that make your vanity Not look like that one.

But people's interpretations of "Like this, except change that" can be very loose and vary a lot, especially when it's verbal. Something like this needs drawings with the specific details called out.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I wanted plain shaker style, and its not the style beadboard I wanted either, but I feel like they put in more work, and Im just being bratty.
I just got called by the guy and he said that he thought the vanity didnt look good with the slabs, so it was his contribution to make everything beadboard...he said he'll change them out :)
To their credit, Im posting my kids' vanities they did, which look great. There is an intensional gradual increase in size of the drawers as you go down.

I think you were pretty clear on what you wanted, providing a photograph and only changing the dimensions. Nothing at all bratty about wanting what you ordered. Why he would change your design without asking first, not very good judgment. You're right, it is a heavier, country look. Doesn't matter if it's good looking or well done or not, it's not what you ordered and needs to go with your house and taste, not someone else's. Glad to hear he will fix it for you.

To me, it looks more masculine and lake-housey the way they executed it. I know it would bother me every time I looked at it. I would ask them to change it.

Okay, I'll be odd (wo)man out here. I think you did well. You have essentially the same cabinet at a fraction of the price. While the look is not identical, it is similar - has the same "feel". It reminds me of those magazine and HGTV shows where you duplicate a look for less $. Sure - it's not the high end pricey cabinet pictured in houzz, but let's keep it real, neither you nor I are high end houzz customers either. :-) We do the best we can with what we have. You have a very nice cabinet, made in the good ole USA (of THAT you can be proud), made by conscientious hardworking Amish, custom made just for you!!! What's not to like. Keep it. Change out the drawer fronts it you must (I think they are fine as is but it may be interesting to change to slabs on the top two drawers but keep the beadboard on the bottom.). Be happy with your purchase and enjoy your new bath!
