Favorite Homemade Headboard you've seen?

As described in my other post, I want to move my bed to in front of a double window. Right now I have two wooden frame like arts over the bed inlieu of a headboard. My dresser and chest actually came with a waterbed that the headboard is long gone. I know that I have seen several homemade headboards on the decorating shows including a wooden one with metal panels but I want an easy diy version. Has anybody saw one that seemed way too easy but yet very attractive?

What is your skill level with power tools? I may have some plans somewhere I could send you.

One made from a panel door would be easy and look nice. If you don't want a stained one you can get a fairly inexpensive one at HoDe or Lowe's. Sometimes you can find good ones on Craigslist too.

mkrzy, great job on your headboard. I wish I were so handy. I like the white; you can always recover it with something else later. bebe, the bed is from a company called Fine Furniture. Their website is www.FFDM.com. We ordered ours from Boyles furniture in Mocksville, NC. The whole collection is beautiful and on sale right now. meg, I'm no expert on this but the leather would seem the most durable. You could always buy a piece of the microfiber and test it out. I'm just throwing caution to the wind with the fabric on mine but i do have three huge pillows that will probably always be there; we keep them in back of our sleeping pillows at night. Good News, the bed I ordered is actually in the warehouse!!!

Did you check Ballarddesigns.com? They have them and you can choose one of their fabrics. They may even let you supply your own fabric, not sure. I had a floral one made once. I had the fabric and I took it to an upholsterer and he made it the shape and style I wanted. The shape of mine was kind of simple, but I had the fabric ruched across the top and sides with solid piping and then the fabric was set flat across the front, no tufts.

Ok, three of my favorite voices around here--Palimpsest, Ideefixe and Oakleyok--have pretty well covered all the bases, but just to recap... The three biggest causes of Decorating Remorse--other than watching TV decorating shows & wishing you had done something other than what you already did, I mean--are Being in too big a hurry & buying something just to have something (rather than have nothing), Worrying about inconsequential stylistic labels & categories, and Buying brand new pieces. I did without a sofa for five years rather than buy something merely to be have something to sit on, I don't worry about what style supposedly goes with what, and I never buy anything new. Well, almost never. The most expensive thing in my house is an early 19th century sofa, for which I forked over 850 of my hard-earned dollars, and the two-months-long diet of peanut-butter sandwiches that paid for it was worth every bite. The second-most-expensive thing I ever bought was also the only thing I've ever bought new: a gigantic 3-piece arched mirror set out of a popular catalog that looked very handsome in the photo but which turned out to be a piece--well, three pieces--of junk, which I should have predicted, since, Hello!, it was in a popular catalog. All I can say is I must have been on Nyquil that day. Anyway, I seldom make mistakes, but when I do, I don't brood & beat myself up over them, so I hauled them down to the service entrance lobby of my building and in a few hours, they were gone. The sofa I'll have forever.

Interesting re-reading this thread! I still use a satin covered boomerang pillow. My new higher pillowtop mattress covers most of the headboard now though. This is a shame as it is made of Norwegian knotty pine wood which matches a vintage dressing table but the top is barely visible after the pillows are stacked against it. I would get it made taller by inserting some wood into the posts at the bottom but I continually need the bedframe. No more sleeping on the floor these days as I wouldn't be able to get up!

Most of the make-your-own headboards attach directly to the wall. It sounds like you need one that attaches to the bed. If you like to lounge in bed and lean against the headboard, you might want to consider an all-in-one frame and headboard.

Hi,

You mentioned metal so I'm not sure if you want a more contemp look or ???

I made this headboard in a redo of my niece's room 5 years ago. We had taken an old piano out of my folk's basement and broken it down....great old parts we were able to use in a variety of ways. I took the front panel and used the outer trim as a frame for an upholstered headboard but you could just do the plain upholstered part...took maybe 2 hours from start to finish.

I cut a piece of plywood for the back, topped by 4" deep foam and used spray adhesive to attach the foam. Covered that with muslin and stapled to the back. Then used a cheap matelasse twin spread and stapled over the muslin. Drilled holes in the back of the plywood in order to wire the buttons to created a tufted headboard. Small screws next to each hole in the back allowed me to run thin wire up through the foam and fabric and then through the button. Pull wire taut and wrap around the screw. I Scotchgarded with 2 coats when done.

The old beat up piano panel I painted and then finished up with pearly white glaze. Put on 2 legs and screwed to the wall.

Couldn't be simpler and the tufting adds a very rich look. Here's a few pix:

Sorry...didn't take a pix when all was put together. But as I said, just the upholstered part would be all you'd need.

My friend and I made these for our daughters recently. I would be happy to email you the step-by-step directions if you are interested...

Another trick I've seen decorators use is an old door, laid horizontally. Depending on the look you are going for, it can be distressed and shabby looking, or high-gloss paint.
