Finished White Kitchen Mini Reveal
This forum was invaluable when we we designing and overseeing the build of our kitchen remodel. I learned so much about what makes a kitchen not only work aesthetically, but functionally as well. I love, love this new kitchen. There is a designated place for everything, which makes keeping it organized so much easier. We finished the kitchen about six months ago. The remodel turned into a bit of a nightmare and took 15 months. I've been so busy getting settled back into the house that I've neglected posting the final results.
This kitchen remodel was part of a fairly major remodel of the living areas of a late 60s brick ranch we purchased two years ago. The original kitchen was tiny, as you can see in the photos. We took down the wall between the kitchen and small family room. We also pushed a couple feet into an oversized foyer, as well as a foot into the existing dining room in order to make more space for the kitchen. The ceiling was already vaulted in the family room, but we extended this into the kitchen during the remodel. If I were to pick my two favorite things about this kitchen it would be the Corian Sea Salt countertops and the Franke Orca sink. I love, love these countertops. These are a maintenance breeze, and I love the way they feel. Many people, including my builder, were skeptical when I said I wanted Corian but were blown away with the results. I also really like having all the drawers for dishes, as well as the small drawers in the glass hutch where I store flatware. Makes unloading the dishwasher so easy! Here are some basic details:
Cabinets: Custom
Cabinet Paint: BM Simply White
Counters: Corian Sea Salt
Island top: Mahogany with dark walnut stain
Sink: Franke Orca
Fridge: Sub zero
Rangetop: Wolf
Wall oven: KitchenAid
Hood: Superior
Floors: Oak, stained with dark walnut/provincial mix

Comments (66)@nosoccermom - good questions! :) I really love my kitchen. Both the function and aesthetics of it. I must have spent a gazillion hours researching, looking at options, reading, etc. And in the end, I am very happy with my choices. But, there are a few things I would do differently: 1. Prep/bar sink - I would skip it if I were to do things over. I hardly ever use it. I drank the "Gardenweb Kool-aid" regarding prep sinks and should have known it wouldn't be that useful for me. That said, I do like how it looks, and it makes a handy "hiding" place for things on the counter. ;) 2. Ventilation - we have a challenging configuring that was better suited to a downdraft unit. But I love the look of the overhead hood, so went for it. It's not terrible, but I am sure it would function better with a downdraft. I would probably still have the hood facade, but then have a DD for actual ventilation. Favorite things: 1. My appliances (hopefully I won't jinx myself by saying this!). They've all performed beautifully. Love my microwave drawer - so much easier and more functional. French door fridge is great (adore the filtered water dispenser inside); and my induction cooktop and ovens have been wonderful. I got brave enough to try the self-clean function on my ovens not long ago, and it worked great. 2. My backsplash. Makes me happy to look at it. Even though it was a splurge, it was totally worth it. 3. Drawers! Love, love them - especially the ones for pots/pans, bowls, serving dishes and baking supplies. 4. And, similarly - drawer inserts/dividers for spices, knives, utensils, etc. Love having a place for everything! Hope that helps! Comments (63)Well, they are supposed to remove the old oven and install the new oven tomorrow, but I haven't heard from anyone. Good news! They measured for my countertop this afternoon. I went to approve it a half hour later. Then they started cutting the slab...and only one slab! Yay! The fabricator said they will install Monday or Tuesday. Comments (73)Hi Chrissy, I do not have Anderson Windows. They were put in by a local window and siding company(long before the renovation) that is no longer in business. I absolutely love Simply White. It is a soft white without being a stark white. I think it is even Ben Moore's Color of the Year. No, it does not match our white vinyl windows. It is something that only I notice, but probably not anyone else. Usually details like that really bother me, but this does not. Probably, if I were getting new windows and picking white paint at the same time, it is something that I would way over think. But since we put the windows in many years before the renovation, there was nothing I could do about it. 9 years agoFinally got a chance to snap a couple more photos--unfortunately the sun was quite bright at the time so the lighting is not great. First are the before and after floor plans. Before:

We took down the wall between the original kitchen and family room. We also bumped out a couple feet on the back wall of the family room, as well as a couple of feet into the original foyer and one foot into the original dining room. We bumped the kitchen window out and ran the counter up to it. We also added a door out to the back. Minor changes, but it really added a lot of good space to the new area. I don't miss the space in the foyer or the dining room. The other major thing we did was replace the existing second set of basement stairs off the garage with a mudroom. Previously the only way in the house was through the front door.

The original kitchen was approximately 12 x 12. The new space (incorporating the old family room is approximately 15 x 27. The kitchen area itself is about 15 x 16. I will say, though, that it really feels much larger than that! I really wouldn't need or want it any larger. This house was a downsize and it is just perfect for us at at this stage!

9 years agooldbat2be--what has surprised me the most about working in this new kitchen is my new love for baking. I never really baked before--other than from box mixes. The downside to baking, of course, is eating all the baked goods! I've had to reduce the frequency of my baking (or buy a whole new wardrobe)--but here are a few of my accomplishments
