Looks just right to me.

The light will shine right on the book and not in the eyes, and pushed aside will make nice pools of light on the bedside tables.

And they look very nice in relation to the curve of your wonderful headboard.

I need the answer to this too but not likely until Sunday. I just bought the Restoration Hardware Library sconce and am not sure where to put it (assuming I use it bedside in the first place).

Here they are up! I still have lots do in here but I'm getting there (the pillows are not staying, just trying out colors).

I remember choosing the placement for mine- nothing as organized as a taped up template, haha. I got into bed with a book and had husband move the fixture around until it illuminated my book perfectly in all of my reading positions. Then he held it as I got up and eyeballed it for balance, adjusted it, got back into bed to recheck, then all over again for the other side, then measuring to make sure both sides were identical.

It took us forever, but combining practical functionality with a balanced aesthetic is not easy! You want the light on the reading material, not in your eyes. You need it where you need it and I still wanted to try and center them over the night stands.
And of course the last thing you want to have happen is to have to move them because they hit you in the head as you extend the arm :)

Hi cearbhaill, my husband was not home{{gwi:807}} to hold up the lights so it took me some time. I did lie in the bed after I taped up the template just to check that it would right for husband as well. I started with a line 24" above the mattress along the wall and looked at different positions from there. Another thing that was important to me was having the on off switch at a comfortable height and distance for me to switch off while lying in the bed.
My old bedside light was too high on the side table and it was annoying to have to partially get up and stretch to switch off when I was close to falling asleep. The position they are in now is an exact arm length from my reading position to turn off.

Those look so nice!!

I just put mine in, but I didn't use it as a reading light, just as a wall sconce. It can be used as both, but you'd probably want to get the swing arm variety instead (it's the Library sconce from Restoration Hardware in vintage brass, and it comes in fixed and swing arm varieties).

KevinMP, very nice light and ROOM! I seem to recall some other pictures of your home like the kitchen and bath and love everything that you have done.
I will do my wall painting tomorrow which will require the cover being taken off the mount plate. I do not trust myself to paint first and then install. After that I am still looking for a runner carpet to tie it all in. I am getting there slowly.
