Make the Most of Your Bedside Space
Put Your Nightstand to Work with These Space-Saving Techniques
Bedroom too tiny? No room for much more than a nightstand? Not to worry; with a little creative arranging you can still have your lamp and the space for a book, alarm clock and maybe even a decorative item or two. Take note of these smart solutions for squeezing every drop out of your bedside space.
A petite swing arm lamp (like Artemide's Tolomeo, shown here) takes up little space but still provides ample light right where you need it.
If you've got no nightstand space to spare, consider floating a pendant or two down from above instead. You'll free up room and create a little interest overhead.
... Or mount a light to the wall. This sconce provides direct light for reading, but easily swings out of the way when not in use.
Here the sconces become almost a sculptural presence, set off against a crisp white wall.
A tiny niche set into this built-in is just big enough for the necessities. Lights are recessed into the shelf overhead for illumination without clutter.
Bunkers need not forgo bedtime vitals...
Here they've cleverly carved out room into the head of each bed for shelves. Another smart feature? Individual lights for nightly reading that won't disturb any other sleepers.
A floating tabletop provides room without taking up valuable floor space — a major coup in a small studio like this.
For rooms with two beds, consider enlisting one nightstand to do double duty. Even if you need a slightly larger one to accommodate everything, it's likely to take up less space than two.
A mounted shelf offers just enough room for a light, alarm and a slim piece of art.
If you're blessed with a bit more room but have too much stuff with which to fill it, consider a built-in surround. The footprint here is pretty much the same as that of a bed and two normal nightstands, but provides enough space for a small library of books and other objects. Mounting sconces to the interior continues the clever use of space.
