Has anyone painted or covered their stove or dishwasher?Any pics?

My stove and dishwasher work fine, but they're tan and black and I want them all black. Has anyone successfully attempted changing out colors?? The stove seems easy enough, since it's only metal that needs to be painted, but the dishwasher has a plastic type panel on the front.... and it's not reversible. They'll both be changed out in the coming year or two, but for now I was looking for some neat DIY project.

I did this, sort of... When we moved in five years ago the white dishwasher worked fine, but the front panel was stained and dingy. I used acrylic artist paint to paint a silly portrait of my dog onto the front panel, which was kind of a textured plastic. We've since replaced the dishwasher, but the painted panel held up better than the appliance itself. I kept the panel of course when we got rid of the dishwasher.

I wouldn't do this to a really nice dishwasher, but since you're planning to replace it in a couple of years...

I saw last night that there are magnetic panels you can buy to cover it up, but there seem to be about 2-3 dozen different styles and none of them are just right for me right now.

I read that you can use melamine paint on the front of the d.w. plastic and disguise it that way, but then when I went to look at it and plan it out, I realized that the control panel is also almond, and the words to the controls are in that plastic, so that pretty much ends the chance of a d.w. makeover! I do want to paint the stove though, it's almond and black going to all black.

When I told my husband my plan last night, and how the d.w. can't be changed he reminded me how inexpensive d.w.'s are, so we'll just replace that and paint the stove.

I just use regular craft paint in the little bottles, available at Michael's or Hobby Lobby... but most large stores carry that stuff in their tiny craft sections. I'm sure if you look, there is a specific type of paint that is made for painting on porous surfaces that might be moist at times... I'm not incredibly interested in how long the paint lasts on the pots, so it doesn't matter to me. I'm sure you could find sealer, as well. Michael's and Hobby Lobby both carry a nice selection of stencils, too. I've used pieces of a sponge to dab the paint on, using a stencil. The English Ivy pattern is one of my favorites, as are other types of vines or country type motifs. I don't have a photo of the pot set I did... I never thought to take one. Most of the pots I have currently are either plain, or they're so ratty looking, a picture wouldn't be worth taking! But I'm sure you get the ideas... You could also use a clear/transparent bathroom silicone and glue little pieces of tiles or mirror around the rim... or colored glass pieces, or whatever... a mosaic! Take a look around your local craft store... you just never know what sort of ideas might be waiting! Think "pot rim"... and let your imagination go wild!

DH picked up mine yesterday and I just got a look at the bottle. It's Ferti-lome brand and the bottle says "Soil Acidifier Plus Iron". Did we get the right thing? This ran $5.99/quart. It's raining here and probably will be for a few days. I'll be out of town for 4 days, so don't know when I'll get to test it.

I see what you mean about grounding the stairway. I can show these pics to her. She also has heart pine in the foyer and on the stair treads. It's right as you come in the front door, so the dirty risers are in your face. Adding something such as a rug wouldn't work, as she can't lose any space on those treads. Originally the stairway was to have a landing and then turn. Supposedly the previous owner/builder enlarged the upstairs bathroom and had to change the stairway. Now it comes straight down. When the kids were younger, my sis would threaten them about running, afraid they would break their necks. I'm happy to report, they're still in one piece:) ah, but those narrow treads!

The health issues would be in the application of the product, I believe. A low VOC paint would be on the outside, therefore not subject to the heat. However, the "above the oven" part could mean there's heat, but it would have heated plastic to begin with, which can cause the (shoot, is it) polycarbons (?) to emit? Can you tell I'm winging it? That amateur statement made, OP, I'd definitely still sand the plastic and prime it with an adhesive primer. Painting unpaintable surfaces have become much more doable these days. I've very successfully painted melamine this way, too. I plan to paint the side of my refrigerator. [insert mad scientist howling cackle] I'd like to see your pics!

We actually ordered a stainless front panel and control panel for our old dishwasher -- a Bosch that really works well. It cost about $200 all told. Might not be worth it if you'll only be keeping the old one a year or two... but worth checking into with the manufacturer.

There aren't that many attractive heat resistant paints on the market available for a DIYer to tackle a stove project. One option is to have it coated with a high temperature powder coating, but that's an expensive option and not likely to be worth it for such a short term. Another option would be to check out an auto parts store for spray enamel that is meant for engine coatings. However, to get it to stick will require a good deal of prep. It'll have to be sanded enough to get a "tooth" and then prime with a high heat primer and then the paint. What ever you choose, do NOT use just "plain" paint for your stove. It can burn and emit toxic fumes, which is why enamel is used on stoves. Enamel is fused glass on metal which is why it's so difficult to paint.

It might be easier to just find a second hand stove on Craig's List.
