MBR Update...Pics

I've been feverishly working on my MBR for about 7yrs LOL!. Here is where I am at as of this AM.

Our MBR is very small, only 12x13 w/ this giant king bed. It's not uber decorated so I apologize if anyone was expecting more but I really wanted something pared down yet still quietly elegant. It's not filled w/ fancy fabrics, tons of pillows etc. I feel such a sense of calm and serenity when I walk into my bedroom now but I understand how it's not for everyone. There is nothing in the room that doesn't serve a purpose or have a story behind it.

Things to do yet:

1. Paint ceiling shade of grey

2. New pillows (ours are super flat over the yrs.)

3. Find/ sew a large long lumbar pillow in pretty shade of blue/green velvet.

4. Put white bedskirt on instead of that horrid quality blue one that is on now.

5. Hang antique empire chandelier.

6. Finish painting doors white someday!

It looks great! From your description I was picturing it to be really bare with not really any personal touches and that's not the case at all.

I love those lamps and the frame around the painting really makes it stand out. I love the more rustic looking wood tables paired with the white.

What color are your walls?

Nice plan but a few things you might want to think about before finalizing: 1) This is a very complex shaped house design (i.e., lots of exterior corners). Be aware that the least expensive home to build is a basic rectangle and that every variation from the rectangle increases costs. All those juts in-and-out increase costs per square foot because they result in a higher ratio of exterior walls to interior square footage which means more framing material, more insulation, a more complicated roof-line and foundation, etc. Not saying you should change a thing... just thought you ought to be prepared for the sticker shock you may receive when you start getting bids. 2) You kitchen island is positioned so that any dirty dishes in the sink will be on display to anyone in the Great Room. No problm if you're the kind of housekeeper who keeps the sink area spic and span at all times. Me? I would want the island turned so that the raised section helped to hide my sink from the great room. But that would pretty much require an entire reshaping of the kitchen and thus the rest of the plan. So, you will probably want to keep it as is. 3) No windows in the kitchen itself? Patio deck doors and great room windows may be rather far away to provide much natural light for kitchen. You don't mention the direction your house faces and, if the wall that the fridge is against is a north wall, you might not want any windows there. But, in that case, I would question placing your screen porch on that side of the house. 4) The laundry room and mud room seem a bit cramped...especially for a home with three kids. Since the garage juts forward anyway, unless you're already running up against lot-line setbacks, consider pulling the snout of the garage forward another couple of feet and then extending the mud room and laundry room forward an equal distance into the garage to enlarge them. The cost to do so should be relatively minor compared to overall cost to build because, although you would be adding a bit of square footage, you would not be increasing the complexity of the design in any way. 5) Make ABSOLUTELY certain that your pantry is wide enough to accomodate the freezer you want to put in it... not just the one you have already. Measure the depth of the freezer you want to purchase and then add about three inches. A freezer can't sit right up against the back wall. You have to leave room for air circulation and you don't want the freezer sticking out so far into the pantry aisle that you can hardly squeeze past it. I thought I had left plenty of room for a freezer in our mudroom/pantry but freezers today are bigger than my old one. Our new one just BARELY fits. I have just exactly enough space between the freezer and the counter across the aisle to fully open the freezer door... nor an inch to spare. It works - but if my pantry/mudroom were 6 inches wider, it would feel a whole lot more spacious! Also, speaking of freezer doors, you probably don't want to put the freezer right up against the side wall or you may not be able to fully open the freezer door. It needs swinging room. Finally, make sure that at least one of your pantry doors is wide enough to get the freezer in and out of the pantry! We had to have the interior door of our pantry reframed to 36" wide b/c our builder installed a 32" exterior door on the mudroom/pantry instead of the 36" wide one specified on the plans... and we didn't notice THAT error until after we fired him and took over the build ourselves. (By that time it would have cost us thousands to reframe the exterior wall, get a new exterior door, have the cabinets on the exterior walls remade to fit the reduced space, etc., etc., etc., GRRRR!!!) 6) Similar issue to above...how much room is there between your refrigerator and your kitchen island? Unless you get a "counter depth" fridge, your new fridge could stick out as much as a foot beyond the edge of the surrounding countertop. 7) Have you thought about furniture placement yet? Bedroom 2 looks a bit problematic b/c the best position for a double bed seems to be up against the bathroom wall. But that would mean one would have to walk around the bed to get from closet to bath. Perhaps you could flip the bathroom vertically so that the tub is against the front wall and the bathroom door is close to the closet door. 8) In bedroom 3, would the door fit on that little angled section of wall? If so, I think you'd find it easier to place a full-sized bed and other furniture in the room. Besides, that would give you a nice section of wall space in the landing/hallway for a bench or maybe some book cases. 9) Not sure I agree with zookeeper93 about combining the closet and laundryroom (especially not if you can increase the size of the laundry room.) It can be nice to have a separate closet that isn't subjected to laundry room lint. And I definitely would not want my freezer in the laundry room area. Guests helping me cook sometimes need to access the freezer when my laundry room is simply not presentable. LOL! 10) I do agree with zookeeper93 tho that the angles in your master closet are going to limit the actual useable hanging space. Unfortunately, I don't think you have room enough for a door into the commode room if you try to just straighten out the wall by the commode room. I can't tell what those two little niches are between the master closet and the master bedroom (seats?, inset bookcases? art niche's?). If it were me, I would get rid of them and incorporate that area into my master closet. I would also swap where the shower and commode are. I think that would give you enough room for a closet with nice-sized USEABLE his/hers sections. Maybe something like this with a pocket door to the master bath: BTW, you need to be very careful when using pocket doors to make sure that you're not planning to attach closet rods or the supports for something like an Elfa closet system to the walls where the pocket door "hollow space" is. Remember, there are no STUDS in that space and you need STUDS to support the weight of clothing hanging on closet rods.

beb0622-While Schneider had a significant number of samples in the showroom, they had a much bigger selection in the granite yard. River Valley wasn't even on display inside, but they had 5 polished slabs & 3 leathered ones in the yard. Definitely make sure you select your own slabs and depending on the unique characteristics of each one you choose, you may want to be there when they template to help with placement of cutouts. I'll try to get some better pics of the island and the granite top in our oldest son's bathroom to give you examples of what I mean on the templates. From your post, I take it you have already selected your cabinets & finish. Definitely take a sample of your cabinet doors with you when you select your granite. You also might consider calling the granite place & asking when they typically get new slabs in--I got the impression at Schneider that they get theirs all at once and once they've sold most of it another round comes in. You'll want to go when they have the best selection available. dekeoboe-The tile was not rectified, but it was darn skippy close. Brandon at Fla. Tile said he thought we could get by with 1/8" but that was too wide for my taste. My Dad has done alot of tile work when he was doing renos and he advised just getting with the installer and insisting on the 1/16" joints. When the tile showed up and we met with the installer, he took a look and said 1/16" with unsanded grout was not a problem at all based on the edges even though it wasn't truly rectified. That's why I mentioned that you might have to push for the tighter grout lines if that's the look you like. Some installers may be set in their ways and tell you that you have to use sanded grout and have to have wide grout lines and that's just not true. What type of flooring are you going with in your baths?

I can see why it feels so serene to you. A couple questions. Where do you both store all of your clothes ? And also where did you get the bed ?

I love your vignettes, as always. And I of course am totally with you on the serenity thing. Did I ever bore you with my inspiration house? (if not, it's linked, I think you will like it).

Anyway, it is always hard to place a large bed in these old houses. Have you googled some ideas for beds in front of windows? I am thinking there may be a better way to address that, since it is a common problem.

My second question is around comfort. I can't imagine sitting up in that bed, since there is nothing to lean on. The bed is lovely, but if it were me I would want a simple upholstered headboard (might also diminish the window awkwardness?) that I can lean on. Otherwise I see a room that I can literally do one thing in -- lay down. Well okay two things.

I also think that in a small room I would forego a footboard.

All that said, if you love love the bed and are making a statement with it, then every other issue is subordinate.

It's a very cozy looking room, as well as very pleasant to the eye! Bet you can't wait to go to bed at night!! I love the vintage pictures too, but I always buy vintage rather than new art~~I think it's the darker colors that were used that attracts me.

I also have to ask, where *do* you put your clothes? I don't see an armoire or a dresser/chest. I have my dressers in the walk-in closet, but can't see a closet~~is there one? ;o)

I forgot that the statuette is a deer w/ her fawn. I saw it at my mom's house and fell in love w/ it so she gave it to me. It's such a graceful, gentle piece and of course I always think of my mom when I see it. The old books are gardening books that belonged to DH's grandfather or great grandfather.

Thanks Shee! I've been torn about what lamps to use for a long time. Had to be something that I already owned. I had 2 matching pairs to choose from and those 2 mismatched ones. Picked those since the empire chandelier is gold. Went w/ the black shades to pick up the black bed.

The walls are BM Simply White. Remember how I posted that it seemed too on the yellow side? It looks much better to my eye since I finally found the rest of my white curtains and now I can see that the ceiling is just such a cool shade of standard white that it makes the SW look lemony near the ceiling where the 2 meet. I'm confident that once I get the ceiling painted grey that my 'right whit'e wall worries will all be over! Glad experience told me to wait to repaint.

Aaahhhhh the clothing! Well on the other side of the room is a highboy type dresser that I rescued from our alley on trash day years ago. That stores DH's clothing and old TV on top. Once I have a small flat screen TV to mount on the wall the dresser will go into the alcove. My clothes are in an old tall 1 drawer wide IKEA dresser in the closet.

My bed was the first purchase I made from Bombay Co. when I started working there.

Mtnrdredux - that house made my heart skip a beat! Inside, outside, all of it!

Bed has to go in front of a window. The only wall w/o windows isn't wide enough for the bed w/o the door almost hitting it. I use Euro pillows to prop up on if I'm reading. Reading in bed isn't something that I've been able to do for a few yrs. You can see the stack that I've started but always fall asleep. Always running then collapsing at the end of the night LOL!

Eventually when I get a new bed it will be a 4 poster canopy but that's not even on my radar unless one arrives for free. And I've always been lucky finding furniture so maybe one will find me! The current footboard is part of the frame. DH & I have discussed making blocks for the frame and taking the footboard off but it's not priority yet.

Patty cakes - yes there is a closet albeit a very small one. It was the only closet in the house when we moved in and is awkwardly narrow and deep. I keep a tall 6 drawer & short 3 drawer dresser from IKEA in there for my stuff. They're 20yrs old so they don't need to see the light of day!

That headboard is perfect in front of the window. It doesn't overwhelm or try to make a statement. And girl, treat yourself to new pillows! Makes all the difference in a good night's sleep.

I love it. It's simple elegance, and so peaceful. It's timeless and beautiful. One other idea might be to paint the ceiling a very light aqua or baby blue, rather than grey. Keep posting as you complete your other steps, please. Your bedroom - as is - is pretty enough for a magazine.

Love it- specifically the lamps and tablescapes. I also don't like alot of stuff in my master. we have a bed, 2 night stands and an armoire for extra linens.

When you are done, can you come decorate my house please!

Love your Master Bedroom! I love the iron bed! What make and style is it? It is perfect for your spot. My walls also bothered me until I put up sheers on the side so my windows that made them no longer clash with my linen blinds. The white curtains look great and I think the wall color looks fine. Amazing how colors work with other colors in the room and change when colors and fabrics are changed. I love the antique empire chandelier. Thanks for sharing.

Love your bedroom and your bed looks beautiful in there. It is very sculptural against the white surroundings. Your art and furniture all look so good together and I like you your items arranged on your nightstand. You are so talented in your decorating.

It looks really great. I love your style, and every time I see one of your update threads, I can't wait to click and see - seriously. I love the bed, the white walls and draperies, and the mirror frame you used for the picture above the chair. I love the rustic elements and the sense of calm. As another who can relate to feverishly decorating for seven years, you have achieved a beautiful surrounding there. Wow!

I can't tell you enough how flattered I am reading your comments. Honestly after I wrote the initial thread and before posting it I looked back at the pictures and thought how 'ho-hum' it looks in pictures. I almost didn't post it. I've been stressing out at work a lot and each time I walk into my MBR I feel like the world has floated away and there are no running thoughts. There is no chaos in my head about what needs done or how I am going to accomplish it and I didn't feel like that was 'conveyed' via the pictures.

I'm going to get new pillows next week - 4 total since I like the 'stacked' look. It bugs me how boxy and flat memory foam mattresses are. There's just no 'soft' look to them.

Jen9 - I love a little bouquet of flowers. I usually have a little silver mint julep cup of them on my bedside table when things are blooming in my garden. I wanted to treat myself this Christmas and for once decorate the MBR (one of the reasons I pushed so hard to get to this point). I have some greens waiting to go into a cup for my side.

Oceanna. I used to have a blue ceiling in my entry hall before I painted it black. It was so refreshing! I'm going w/ grey in my MBR to tie together the grey ceilings downstairs and the upstairs. I love the 'moodiness' of my grey ceilings w/ the bright white walls. Sort of gives me the same feeling I get on a crisp Fall day when a storm may be brewing. Crazy - I know!

I just love it - it so serene! Spare and calm yet still has special things throughout. It is just lovely.

That's a lovely bedroom, and I love your iron bed. Imo, iron beds are the perfect solution if you have to place them in front of a window.

Ttodd, your words "nothing in the room that doesn't serve a purpose or have a story behind it" to me perfectly describes what a home should contain. Our decorating style is different from yours, but I love what you've done. Our bedroom is only a tiny bit larger than your lovely room. I've hesitated to post our room because it's not sumptuous as many here are, but everything in it has a meaning for us. Congratulations on creating such a beautiful haven. It has a lovely consistency.
