HELP Please! Builder installed marble counters( chipped edges)

Dear Members,

Our builder installed marble counter that has some chipped edges. Also the counter top is not one slab so they joined 2 slabs right in between the faucet and the seam lines exactly with the middle of the sink. The seam is prominent but that is not my concern. It's carrara marble and I am really worried about the water from the faucet shooting directly at the seam.

Do you think we should make a big fuss about this and get it fixed before we close, it's a new house. We paid a lot of money to upgrade it to carrara counter tops.

The seam in my granite counter is also in the middle of the sink. It's the way to get the shortest seam. You don't even see the part behind the faucet. I don't know about marble, but granite seams are sealed with epoxy. I don't think there is an issue with water splashing.

The chips are another matter. The stone shouldn't be chipped before it's even put on. That should be addressed. If the chips aren't too big, they may be able to be smoothed down. If they're big, then you shouldn't have to accept it. So yes, I'd make a big fuss about it.

Call your fabricator, you should not have any chips on a newly installed counter. They should be able to fix it.

Thanks for the nudge Breezy and Fishies! It's long over due. See my link below... drbeanie2000 - you better believe it! Yes, I love my kitchen (and the rest of the house) mostly because it's all mine and we are settled. All the little things I agonized and fretted over don't seem so worrisome now. Actually, all the little things I own and will go on the "in the next house" list. ha! All in all, I am happy will all my choices and am thoroughly enjoying it all! What more could I ask for, eh? Lien laws vary by state, but my general rule is that you should not give final payment to the GC until he provides you with signed lien release forms from all subs, precisely because the subs can file liens against your house even if you pay the GC in full but he fails to pay the subs. You contracted with the kitchen company, and they hired the sub that did the faulty work, so the kitchen company is ultimately responsible for the quality of the work. Assuming you have not already paid the kitchen company in full for whatever you owe them, I would inform them that you are withholding payment in an amount equal to the full cost of the counters until they provide you with a signed lien release from their sub (it is between them and the fabricator what financial arrangement they come to to get the release signed) as well as properly installed counters. In other words, don't pay until you get exactly what you are paying for plus a lien release from everyone.

Your marble and kitchen are gorgeous! I feel so bad for you, I went through this several months ago. The fabricator that did mine did not have the equipment nor expertise as Old Ryder said. They very eagerly took my island back saying no problem, they'd have it repaired in a few days or use another slab from the same lot. When I called to see when they would reinstall, the owner told me he could not meet my expectations and would give me a full refund. This was not what I wanted nor expected. Long story short, I have a black walnut island now. Fortunately, yours is a new build so the GC should make this right by hiring an expert to fix it. Keep us posted.

Decision made!!! I talked to my KD and we've opted for eased edge. Our options for tile treatment for top radius or crescent were to end the tile short of the door molding, which would leave very small gap of wall showing. Plus we'd need bullnose tile, which was not ordered and there's no guarantee that the next order would be from the same dye lot. If I'd thought of this earlier in the design process, I could have reduced that run by an inch or two to make it look right but that's not an option now. The cabs are in. = ) We're used to a knife edge; we had porcelain tile counters on our island, which were much sharper than the fabricator's eased edge. We used it to rip out coupons, it was that sharp. We never chipped any tile, never broke a plate or glass either. Fingers crossed. I think this is my last decision!! Oh, wait, I do need to buy new induction friendly pots and pans and dish towels but those are relatively easy decisions compared to this.

The middle of the sink is the ideal place for a seam as it is the least visible place. So, no, I wouldn't complain about that. The chips--it depends where they are and how large they are.

No chips! I would definitely complain. They installed my island and the two corners were chipped during transport. The fabricator sent up an expert who did epoxy voodoo magic and you can't tell. Now mine were on the bottom edge. If it is on the top edge of the counter top, I would worry about it being more likely to chip again.

Word of warning - marble chips - especially around the sink, so tell everyone to be careful about putting heavy pots and the like in the sink. Makes me wish I had gotten the farmhouse sink.
