What I love and don't love about my kitchen

Well, pretty much everything. I love the cabinets DH made. I adore the Whitehaven sink. It is so easy to use and to keep clean. It's even better than I hoped. Not only is it easy to wash dishes and such but I use it whenever I am doing something messy. My old sink just didn't work that way. It was too high, too small, too far back. It was a Kohler double bowl where one is largish and one is small. My Whitehaven is so much better. I just adore that sink.

The faucet splashes in a way that I did not expect. It splashes backward and gets the counter behind the sink really wet. Not so crazy about that.

I love NOT having a garbage disposal and a dishwasher. And I am so glad to be rid of my second sink. I didn't use those things and now I have all that lovely storage.

donaleen-sorry about the faucet! That is one of those things that's kind of hard to tell how it's going to turn out before hand.

We are in a rental now (before the build) - no disposal and no dishwasher and it's driving me nuts! I can't stand shaking and digging out all of those food particles from the strainer. :P Eww!

Did you do a final reveal?

No dishwasher??? I don't think I could do that, but I have the world's smallest double sink...about 5" deep.

Any room behind the faucet for a little tray? Maybe some small herbs or just tiny vases with flowers? That would keep the water off your counter and the humidity would be good for the plants :)

Three minutes per cup ... ... and you have to be out the door on the way to work in 4.5 minutes, right? Buying at BBB - that's "Better Busines Bureau", is it? Or "Beastly Bankrupt Bankers"? Or "Bed, Bath ... and Breadline"? For a mug of home-built coffee - 37.5 cents ... or 47.8 cents, etc. is too rich for my blood. My kids were quite surprised a couple of years ago when Dad sprung for a cappucino. I got a little over 2 lbs. can of the "Good to the last drop" kind a while ago ... for under $5.00, I think. When I opened it, I put it into half a dozen, about 1 lb. jam jars and put the ones that I wasn't using into the freezer - four of 'em still there. I goofed a few years ago - bought about a 4 - 5 cup maker with permanent strainer for about $8.00 at X S Cargo in Edmonton when son and I were up there for nephew's wedding. X S Cargo have low-priced stuff, quite a portion of it refurbished. Within a month I turned it on, then went to add water ... ... and before I got the water going through into the carafe on the heater ... ... I heard a high-pitched "pinggg" ... ... and didn't even need to look at the carafe to know what had happened! Drat! Hard to "refurbish" a cracked coffee carafe! You win a few - you lose a few! You may have a fungal infection. Try a few drops of tea tree oil (I like the Desert Essence brand) and a squeeze of aloe gel in a dollop of very simple lotion (like Cetaphil) on your hands after you shower in the morning, and see if that helps. When you are going to do wet work, try the above, and then put on a pair of thin cotton gloves (like the ones that are sold to sleep in) inside your rubber gloves. The idea is that the tea tree oil cures the fungus, the aloe soothes your hands, the lotion keeps your skin lubricated, and the gloves keep your hands from getting wet and holding moisture, which allows fungus to flourish. If that doesn't help in a week or so, see a dermatologist to find out what the problem is.

I don't love my backsplash

I love the paint color, but I think I'm agreeing with Igloo in imagining that a shade or two darker would bring out the deeper tones in the backsplash and liven it up a bit. Right now the cabinets, backsplash, and wall are all the medium tones and are blending, rather than having some contrast and interest to energize the space. I also agree that the equal spacing of equally sized appliances/accessories on the counter create a monotonous rhythm, whereas some more interesting or even random grouping might be preferable. Maybe throw in a sugar and creamer or something of varied color, shape, and height to add to the mix.

I am crying as I read this. I am so sorry for your loss. You had a beautiful cat and friend. I had a similar situation with my soul mate Maddie. She was 15.5 years old and was miserable. She ate, drank, walked etc but she was not herself and I knew I could not let her live the way she was. I too posted here on this forum asking for advice. In doing so, it helped me come to the conclusion that was one I already knew but was having a hard time accepting. We put her down and I was sick with anxiety and sadness. It has gotten better over the months but everytime I see a sad story about a dog or one that even resembles her I get an ache in my heart. Luckily, those moments are becoming less. Stay strong. You had a wonderful friend who loved you and you loved back. You gave your cat a wonderful life. In my mind that is a gift. Huge hugs!

Glad to hear u love your whitehaven. We will have one too. I haven't picked a faucet, any tips what to look for in one to avoid the splashing problem you're having?

Donaleen, I have a Whitehaven too and was so worried about splashing but I haven't had any either on the front or the back ledge. I have a gooseneck style that hits fairly close to the drain, maybe that helps with no splashing. I still have a dw but I LOVE washing dishes by hand at my new sink.

Isn't the area behind the sink awesome? I love having all that space and can keep my dobie pad on a pretty saucer there.

The only thing I don't like about my kitchen so far is that I would have liked to have had a bit more overhang on my counters.

I think my faucet is the issue. I thought picking a faucet was the hardest thing because they weren't hooked up and who knew how they would perform?

I worried a lot about reach since that was a problem with my old faucet/sink. That is NOT an issue with this faucet and sink. My old sink/faucet also sometimes splashed out the front and this one does not. The back is a better splash problem to have since it is all tile and countertop so I DID improve things.

A faucet isn't a terrible issue to have. They are fairly easily replaced and they aren't that expensive, compared to all else.

Hi Build, The spec sheet says 8 3/4 inches. I haven't had splashing not even when the water hits the metal on the sink grid. I know A2 suggested getting the extended reach faucet but what I got has been perfect, Again I think because of the side, rear drain and the overhang of the faucet, HTH.
