Quartz vs Granite countertop

My island is granite and my sink counter is Zodiaq quartz. I have to say, I think my granite is very pretty but I LOVE my Zodiaq even more. Why? It doesn't show streaks like the granite does. It has some sort of surface pattern that breaks up the light or something. My granite is hard to keep looking good. My Zodiaq is EASY to keep looking good. I think that is a feature.

I ordered a quartzite, and hope it looks as good as your quartz. . Your kitchen looks great with this glass cabinets. Very clever how you did the backspash. Try to show more pictures.

Your upper cabinets appear to be a distinctly different style than your base cabinets...inset vs partial overlay...or was that a simple function of the glass framed doors ?? Looks great, love to see the granite island..

Joseph Corlett - please note that there are some granites than have extremely low absorption rates and therefore will not stain. My granite counters have been in place for 10 years, and look like the day they were installed. I have used spices like turmeric on the counters, spilled lemon juice, wine, tomato sauce, and nothing shows. In fact, I was cleaning silver the other day, and spilled silver polish (an abrasive) on the counter, didn't notice, and it stayed there for several hours. Wiped up, counter showed nothing, because it did not absorb. While there are many stone counters that will show stains, it would be ignorant and misleading to say that all the thousands of granites are that way. As Crl_ said, I would like to see what happens to your favorite solid surface counters when toilet bowl cleaner is left on them. I once left a bit of mustard on my mother's Corian counter; I think she still hasn't forgiven me. If the OP is interested in granite, s/he should go to a stone yard, and ask the people there which granites have low absorption rates, and then bring home samples of those and test them with home spices to see what happens.

We have polished Organic White countertops. We also get subtle metal marks that won't come out. These counters are just a few months old. No one else would notice it, but I certainly do. I would recommend getting a sample of the quartz you are considering and testing it yourself. Maybe we're just unlucky? Although, the number of websites that say "quartz doesn't stain" seem to be equalled by the number of websites that say "here's how to get stains out of your quartz". We haven't tried Magic Eraser and it is somewhat discouraged since it is abrasive, but we may try that next.

My kids are 6, 4, and 2 and we opted to have quartzite countertops installed. I know a lot of people with young children who have quartz or granite countertops and they all seem to be doing fine, but i also understand the other POV that it’s crazy to spend a lot of money on something that the kids are going to beat up anyway.... but I’m not willing to wait 15 years to have a kitchen that i love. As an aside, my grandmother has always had a beautiful house. She favors very fancy decor with a lot of antiques, but was never fussy with her home and it was very well used. With 14 grandchildren and now 4 greats, she has always felt that the reason to make a house beautiful is for the people you love to enjoy it.... and I agree!!!!!

I am a fabricator. Pick the look you like 1st and then evaluate the different materials. With respect to chipping; either quartz or most granites are very chip resistant if the top corner of the edge is radiused at 3/8" or greater. I believe the vast majority of chipping complaints for either material are due to a sharp top radius. Any of the options you are considering should be durable. I have to disagree with others that assert that granite can't take hot pans. In 18 years I've only had one countertop failure due to heat and that was a lady that had four "lefse" burners set out for a party so the stone was subjected to hot spots for several hours. I move hot pans directly from my stove and oven on to my granite all the time with no ill effects.

That is a 1920's style. Check out a book called Bungalow Kitchens or visit an old 1920's kitchen...

I have posted before here but my blog also documented our kitchen project and has lots of photos.

I did NOT post a final reveal. Maybe one day. Right now I just don't have the time and energy.

Our total cost over the 18 years we worked on it was about 32K...of course, we did most of the work ourselves.

Appliances were about 10K, surfaces (counters and floor) were about 10K.... the rest was materials, tools, a new window.

Donaleen, where have you been?!! I love your kitchen. Just that corner shot is beautiful with the cabinets and backsplash. In another thread I realized I don't care much for bands of different tile through a backsplash, but I love that pencil line in yours. It looks so right.

Most of all, I love the cutouts in the doors under the sink. So freaking awesome!!!

Thanks, Linelle. I do love the kitchen. Here is my favorite thing of all: At night I turn the dimmer on the sconce over the sink just so and I have the halogen lights in the VentAHood on low, I have all my little night lights on, and it is magical. I am transported to the very best place as I do my dishes in the sink. Making a little magic, isn't that what it is all about?

As to where I have been. Well my kitty who has a lot of health issues was diagnosed with diabetes when we were just finishing our kitchen . I've been trying to figure it all out. Most important to me is giving him a good quality life. I think I've been down the rabbit hole long enough... there are ALWAYS more questions.

Donaleen, I know what you mean about the magic of little lights. Although I can light up my kitchen like a used-car lot, I prefer my hood lights at night and nothing else.

I understand the importance of taking care of our kitties. Kitchens sometimes have to take a backseat. Hoping for a good outcome for yours.
