Recommendations for Cellular Shades

I'm looking for five shades for four windows and one french door. Interested in room darkening for a plasma TV and insulation - mainly for the french door.

Any suggestions on quality brands or where to buy - online or brick and mortar?

We bought Hunter-Douglas through Direct Buy. Got a very good price and a lifetime guarantee. We had to send one back because it's a very large shade and I was pulling on the cord wrong and wrecked a part; DB shipped it back for us free and return free. I don't know if shipping would be free if you buy your shades somewhere else, but the lifetime guarantee is great! No questions asked.

Two years ago I bought Bali cellular shades for a sunroom. They are cordless topdown/bottomup and they look and work great. I bought mine at Penny's when they had a super promotion and they were beating online prices. They also were offering an interest free for a year special which was really nice since I ended up getting treatments for 16 windows.

I have pleated shades in the back windows of my house and they are fine .. However, I am considering the cellular shades that, in addition to pulling the bottom up, you can also pull the top down. One of my neighbors has this in their front picture window and it looks so nice. These really give you the right amount of privacy and the right amount of light that you need. They are pricey, but in my opinion worth it! Linda

Levelor Cellular Shades and Sheer Shades Quality?

This is an old thread, but I will comment in case anyone is in the same situation. I have 12 Levelor cellular shades. The only ones I have had problems with are the top down bottom up shades, Cordless. They have been replaced twice then inner strings replaced. The 4 with issues are on my French doors. Raised and lowered every day. After about 2 years, they start to lose their full length. When they stopped covering the glass, I complained. Blindsaver.com replaced the first group of 4. Levelor replaced the second set of 4. By then, I was told no more replacements. After a few years, the strings, again started not going to full length. I had to pay to ship the 4 shades, but they were fixed and returned at no cost. Levelor service is great. They say this problem only happens in the cordless shades. So, on my third set of shades in 8 years. I put up with it because I want cordless shades.

I just dug out my paperwork. Ours are Comfortex Insulating Cellular Shades, installed in March of 2006. They were custom made, 3 large shades measuring 76” wide by 62” long. Total cost including 6% tax was $848.11. We are in south central Pennsylvania, for comparison purposes. I know prices vary by region, and our shades are 14 years old. FYI they are very easy to keep clean by vacuuming. Hope this helps!

@suedonim75 I was wondering too about @Angel 18432 comment about her doubt anyone would open the window for ventilation because the window is in a porch or lanai. Actually, the roof in the photo is a second story deck. Perhaps @Angel 18432 was expressing doubt about guests opening the wiindow for ventilation because of security concerns, given that the window is located on the ground floor level.

Thanks. Direct Buy is out - but I'll watch JCPenney for sales. Anything else that I should look for in cellular shades? Seems like they come in single, double, and triple - I was thinking of double.

Our H-D doubles insulate very well, darken sufficiently,and we like the look. H-D may have sales too, haven't checked on that. I do love the 100% guarantee. We have top down bottom up with a remote in the bathrooms and just regular corded ones in the other rooms.

I put in Kathy Ireland Hunter Douglas cellular shades. They are a cheaper line of HD and at the time came with a free remote. This was great since I have 6 windows and furniture is underneath all of them.

Be careful, most cellular shades cannot get wet; as in getting a good cleaning. HD can be dunked in a soapy tub and rinsed.

Wow - these things are expensive - I wasn't expecting this to be a thousand dollar decision! I went to Home Depot and Bali did seem to have the smoothest operators. JCPenney was the most expensive even with the "60% discount". I guess I'll shop around some more.

A friend of mine re-did her entire house with cellular shades recently. She used blinds.com and was pleased with the price and rapid turnaround. I'm going to be buying double-cell cellulars soon for my new home, and will probably use blinds.com unless I can find a better "sale" somewhere else.
