undercabinet lighting: xenon vs led. how much can leds be dimmed?
Comments (4)I looked at many LED undercabinet lights, but the light quality is not as good as Xenon. I don't like the flat color rendition of LED and the cooler color temp. I ended up getting the stainless steel Kichler Xenon strip. The only benefit of LED, in my view, is the energy efficiency. But how long do you leave the undercabinet lights turned on every day? In our case, we don't turn it on that often so the energy savings would never pay for the extra cost. We are using LED on all of the other lights including the recessed room lights, because those will be turned on all the time....See Morehigh vs. low voltage LED under cabinet lighting
Comments (1)How high is high? I'm not up on the latest LED technology, but I'd be surprised if the the high voltage LEDs consumed line voltage(110V). And if the require anything less than 110V, then I don't see the benefit of the high voltage models because you'll still need a transformer or LED driver, which is a transformer specifically for LEDs....See Morexenon vs. LED vs. fluorescent undercab lighting
Comments (27)Yes; they are the fixtures; what they list on their undercabinet LED page as light arrays. We have two runs; we were able to do the wiring as part of the remodel while we were down to the sheetrock. If you look at the specs for the lighting, you will see that there is a 6' power supply cord. One end plugs into one end of the light array. That cable then goes into the wall and comes out behind a base cabinet. The lights are wired to a switch; wiring from the switch comes out at the same point as the power supply cord. The two are brought through a hole in the back of a base cabinet. The wire to the switch is spliced to the power cord of the transformer (after cutting off the plug). The power supply cord plugs into the transformer. The transformer sits in the cabinet. For one run, we have the transformer at the bottom of the cabinet behind and under a drawer; the other happened to line up with the cabinet that holds our trash pullout. That had a little shelf between the bins and the top drawer; the transformer sits on the shelf. Here is a little drawing; hopefully it will make this clearer:...See MoreUnder cabinet LED strip lighting warm vs. cool
Comments (2)You could look at setups with both cool and warm light before making the decision. Some prefer having both the UCL and room lighting at the same color temp which in most homes is 2700k. On the other hand, linear fluorescent UCL is usually >= 3500k. I went with cool white (~ 3500k) for the UCL since the backsplash color went better with cool white than warm (2700k) and the UCL is used more often than the room lighting. The color reproduction will depend quite a bit on the Color Rendition Index (CRI) of the light used. With hue changing light strips, it is technically possible to have a color temp range from < 2500k to 5000k. Maybe something to think about as a future upgrade?...See Morewillinak
