We are a little behind schedule but making progress.

Remember this photo?

It looks like this now.

This is the laundry closet and refrigerator area.

DH is 95% done with the Bruce maple hardwood floor. It took alot longer than expected but we really like it. It already has a few dents for the install and the dogs nails have scratched the surface but I don't care.

View out the back windows.

We have 1 week to get all the cabinets installed!

WOW !! You are making progress. It will be so beautiful when it is finished. Good that you are already accepting "patina" on the floors :) That view would be all I would notice anyway...why look down ??? c

debrak--VERY EXCITING! Your view is breathtaking...is that a real deer or statue? The floors are gorgeous and were worth all the effort you put into them, it shows! What will your countertops and cabinets be?

Believe it or not, there are hardwood guys out there that "have been doing this for 20 years" as they say, and never installed a border, feature strip, or medalion. They just straight lay. I lot of contractors will not show their help all the tricks, or how it is done, because in the future, they will become "the competition" They then think they know enough, and feel they are not making enough money and go out on there own, and have never done custom work at all. It is pretty much like that in all trades. There is formal and specific training and education, but no one takes advantage of it, because they either don't know it exist, or do not have the money or time to take off work to further their education, so they learn on your floor.

The contractor said if we went with the $9/sf random width floor the total cost would be $17,900... which means about $8000 for installation and finishing. He said the job would take 7-10 days including drying time. If we went with the 4" floor the total cost would be $12,600. It just seems like so much for installation for a week's work. Well, you could DIY. It took me about forty hours of part-timing it to do around 250 square feet of flooring, including sanding but not finishing. It's hard work; buy gel-filled knee-pads. It's also dirty work when sanding; get a good dust mask. But it's something most of us could DIY with some patience, care, and basic skills. Or, you can pay the price of letting someone else deal with the mess, hard-work, and do it quickly. :-) Also, I am not sure why it costs so much extra for installing a random width floor. I'm guessing they're charging you a "pain in the butt" factor, as well as a genuine "it takes longer" factor. Random-width planks seem like it would mean sorting them ahead of time (to be able to grab an entire row of planks of all the same width), and probably some extra care to make it look good (install each row as a different width, and not repeat the pattern: 3", 4", 5", 3", 4", 5", etc). --Steve

It's not inappropriate to ask him any question you feel needs to be answered. Get everything in writing including who's paying the painter. What if he damages your wall, door, etc. with the sanding belt on his machine? Who's doing the actual work, guiding the floor sander and applying the finish, Dust can be a real issue, ask how he handles it cuz you don't want it getting everywhere in your house. Ask for proof of current good-standing license and insurance from anybody entering your property to work. I'm surprised he didn't show you that documentation when you originally met with him. Check him out with your State's Contractor board. I Watch the process if possible. Super Important: The white oak being brought in for the den, make sure it's at your home and acclimating at least 7 days before it's installed.

The deer is actually an archery target, but when real deer come into the yard (and they do), they are perfectly safe. :)

The view is why I insisted the island have seating on both sides. The paint came out really nice. Its hard to tell from the photo but its warm and looks good with the new floor and the old woodwork.

Here is my mood board.

Cabinets are Shenandoah Breckenridge cherry in bordeaux. Granite is White diamond aka Bianco antico.

Paint is balanced beige. The green paint is the staircase that is off of the kitchen.

Debra - it's looking great so far! Sorry to hear that you're a little behind schedule, but it's going to be totally worth it. Next week is templating for your granite, right?

It's wonderful to hear that you are at peace with the patina that is occurring with your floor. I'd have a tough time accepting from the workers, but the fur kids I'd be totally fine with. Patina = someone you love creating character to your house. Damage = someone who is not family/friend doing something stupid to mar things!

Love your gorgeous back yard (in our remodel, we are losing our back yard window...still makes me sad but it's in prep for when we do our master bedroom addition and then we'll have a fantastic view again!) You were smart to capitalize on that lovely view.

Your color choices are so warm and inviting. I can't wait to see everything when it's done. I have Balanced Beige as one of my color possibilities for our kitchen too, but it may be a bit too dark for us since our floors will be much darker than yours.

Looking forward to the next update - it'll start to actually look like a kitchen once the cabinets are in place.
