Can butcher block be cut on a radius?

I need a thick chunk of wood for a bar, or overhang thingy. I was going to have it made out of granite, but the granite I am getting in my kitchen may be too fragile for that purpose, so I think I'd like to get oak and finish it to match my cabinets. Can IKEA butcher block be cut with a rounded radius and used for that purpose? the overhang will be approximately 60" long and stick out maybe 18" at the most. Will it need corbels?

Yes, it can be cut on a radius; as far as I know, rather nicely so. As to needing corbels, you'd be best consulting a carpenter just to make sure. I don't know if the IKEA blocks are made of full-length strips or pieced together, which might impact their stability?

I need the same. Can anyone advise who did this for you? how much it could cost (to cut with a rounded radius)? May be someone in NJ or NY area you can reccomend? thanks for any input!!

Thanks folks. I just spoke with a local company who can make the whole thing for me for a lot less than Boos (they also sell Boos). I can get either end-grain (like the typical butcher block) or plank. He recommended plank, as it looks more like a big farmhouse table, which sounds like a nice look. Our kitchen is quite small (an L shape about 10 x 10 at one side of a 20' by 16' room with fairly low ceilings...) and this island is going to be pretty massive in the space. So maybe a farmhouse table look is more appropriate? Do you think a 5' x 4 1/2' island is just too big for this space? I am considering cherry, on cherry cabinets, with a 10" overhang on the outside for stools. Prices quoted were $725 plank; $925 endgrain... about half what granite costs around here. So I'll do granite on the regular counters only. What do you think???

My opinion of "plasticky" is more at the handle end of the brush than the bristle end, if you catch my drift. Waterlox Original has a dark amber cast to it. This would be the only disadvantage to choosing it, if you object to that. Last time I used it it was on a dry sink converted to vanity. It worked well, color wise, as the top (a new replacement piece) was stained and glazed to a burnt sienna red, so the Waterlox blended right in. I used my standard varnish regimen: - Two coats thinned 50-50 (Varnish to mineral spirits) - Light sanding - One coat thinned 60-40 more or less, light sanding when dry - Two coats thinned 90-10 It's not going to burn in like a lacquer or shellac, but it sands well and you can clean, sand and recoat in the future.

New butcher block typically gets passed thru a thickness planer after glue-up so I don't think you can sand it too smooth. There's lots of detailed info in the attached article on refinishing & caring for BB cutting boards. You can handle it like this? Cut new 2" piece slightly thinner than old top. Lay top face down on a flat level surface,apply glue and hold in place with screws til glue cure's. Turn new piece to rear so that screw holes don't show. To make counter top appear thicker,cut new piece thicker,countersink screws,fill countersinks with plugs and turn new piece to front. If there is any uneveness or squeeze-out an inexpensive card scraper will take care of it. How's that for another way of skinning a cat?

Thanks! I will get one ordered and a couple corbels too, just to be on the safe side. It should be a fairly easy DIY project....I hope. lol!

Yelena, look for a trim carpenter in your area (I'm up in Maine, so can't help you much). Get some references from friends, etc?

It's not a difficult job, it'll take a jigsaw. At least that's what we used when we did it a while back. Just make sure to mark your radius really clearly and cut a little proud of the line so you have lots of room to sand.

I have been looking for an excuse to buy a good jig saw....this is a good one!! I have a friend who builds cabinets....I'll get him to router a nice edge on it for me. I don't like using a router, but a jig saw is fun.
